Pedestrian safety - my five experiences

Being run down as a pedestrian in Corsica. 1984.
Moral: Look both ways twice. Especially overseas when traffic is on the other side.
And after a car has passed. Like trains - there could be another vehicle.

Nearly run over by car on zebra crossing on two way road.
Wait half way to check cars stop in second lane.

Falling over step at end of crossing when talking while crossing.
Don't talk when crossing road.

Passenger in a car when pedestrian ran in front. He ran half way to the middle of the road, saw a car coming the other way, then tried to run back across our car's path when the driver tried to veer to the kerb to go behind him.
In Singapore - the jaywalker is considered to blame within a few yards of a crossing if not using it.
As it was a hire car any faulty brakes would not have been our responsibility.

Passenger in a car when child ran across zebra crossing on two lane one way road.
Councils/Highways dept should install half way refuge to remind pedestrians to stop. The cars in the far lane have drivers who cannot see far right when near the crossing as well as looking ahead.
Parents should hold hands of children when crossing. Don't let them race ahead of you on crossings, even on a zebra crossing. A child is small and can't be seen until the last moment. A child runs quicker. A child doesn't look. Hold their hand.
