At the Singapore Expo (www.foodhotelasia.com) I saw a set of champagne glasses set up in a triangle waiting to be knocked down by a large coloured 'glass' ball.
"Have a go - try breaking our unbreakable glasses!" said the stand organiser. Can you guess what happened. Of course the champagne flutes fell with not a scratch or chip on them.
I asked, "Who do you sell to? Is it bars and restaurants?"
"Not bars. They get free glasses from alcohol suppliers with the suppliers logo and just ask for replacements. We sell to a few restaurants, but mainly places with outdoor dining, swimming pools, beaches, barbecues, homes and businesses."
Are they really unbreakable? Probably not if you drop them from a tenth story balcony. But they do come with a guarantee and if you break one they will replace it.
So where can you buy them and what do they cost? Not cheap plastic, but a sturdy polycarbonate, and they don't look like cheap plastic - they look like real clear see-through glass. (They also have a range of sturdy crockery. I liked the white plates with the sunburst indentation.)
I love good design and I'm also a safety enthusiast. I met Vincent Leck, the sales manager.
They have another office in Malaysia.
