American rugs and British carpets

American and British words are different. A rug is a rug and a carpet is a carpet you might think. Not quite.

Rug
In England a rug is small. You would have a rug beside a bed or under a coffee table.

Carpet
You might have a wall to wall fitted carpet, or a giant sculpted Chinese carpet filling the entire room. If you need two people to lift it, then you would call it a carpet.
