What to look for when buying sleeping bags

Problem
You want a sleeping bag which does the job, not too heavy to carry, not too short, not too long. What are the options?

Answers
One sleeping bag or two?
1 A sleeping bag for one.
2 Two single sleeping bags for two people.
3 A sleeping bag for two. Disadvantage, may be heavier. One person does all the work of carrying. Advantage - give it to the porter or hardier trekker/climber and the novice need not carry it.
4 Two sleeping bags which zip together for a couple but separate when one of you is holidaying alone or you are in separate tents. (For example with men or more experienced climbers doing a longer trip or different route, or all females in one tent and all males in another).

Lightest / Heaviest?
Heaviest will do if you are driving to a destination. Or if using it inside a caravan and want to bring one piece bedding indoors to wash afterwards.
Lightest is obviously an advantage if you are carrying it.

Story
Silk Sleeping Bag
I bought one of these. I kept it for years because I did not go camping and I did not want to give it to anybody else because it was dedicated and I thought it would get stained and easily torn by tossing and turning and sharp toe nails.

I finally confessed to my trekking family that I had it. They responded:
"It's a silk liner. You use them in places where you hire a sleeping bag and don't trust the hired item  for cleanliness.

"Also some Youth Hostels tell you to bring your own sleeping bag liner.

"Regarding toe nails: The last thing we did before departing from home on our last trip was to cut our toe nails short and file off any sharp edges and corners."
