Tour To A Turquoise Mine From The Small Town Of Tonopah In Nevada, or a Free Museum mention gin Wyatt Earp

Map of Nevada, USA, from Wikipedia.

Problem
How can I get a piece of jewellery, keep my husband and son busy on something outdoorsy and educational? Between Las Vegas and Reno, Nevada, after those motels with casinos, kept deliberately int dark so you don't get to notice day and night passing by, and don't get distracted by the urge to go outside, maybe it's time for some vitamin D and something outdoors.

Turquoise Mine Tour
If no room at The Clown Motel, stay at the Mizpah hotel which offers a discount on the whole day tour out to the turquoise mine where you do DIY searching for bits of turquoise. Take your own hammer gloves, snack and drink. It's about 30 km away and like a large hole or spoon shape depression. I think the technical term is open cast mine. No hidden tunnels.

You spend hours getting bits of turquoise, one or two of which they later polish for you, according to the Tripadvisor reviews which I have just spent three hours reading and cross-checking. You would have to mount the turquoise into a pendant yourself. The tour is about $100 per adult, but that includes your turquoise to keep.

If you can't spare the time and money, $100 per adult, on the turquoise tour, there's a free Central Nevada Museum about mining, free (donations welcomed), with a good bookshop. The museum has one several awards, and features people such as Howard Hughes and Wyatt Earp.

For the Clown Hotel, see the previous post.
