What Are Welsh Cakes? Where Can You Try Or Buy Them? How Do You Make Welsh Cakes?

Problem
What are Welsh cakes and how do you make them?

Answer
1 Fishguard Bay Hotel
I first tried Welsh cakes for tea at Fishguard Bay Hotel in Fishguard Wales, hot from the oven, de-lish! They are tiny and more-ish, like a cross between pancakes and scones, with sultanas or currants.

This year, alas, I was only at Fishguard Bay Hotel for three nights, and had no Welsh cakes.

2 On the Train To and From Wales
However, on the train back from Wales to London, the trolley stopped and I got chatting to the ladies selling the food and asked them about how you make Welsh cakes. We looked at the ingredients of Welsh cakes.

3 Make Your Own Welsh Cakes - Ingredients Needed
You need flour (wheat flour). Wheat flour? Why bother specifiying that? Firstly it's probably a requirement for food labelling. Secondly, one might need rice flour for some recipes. You need raising agents. (In the UK we would buy self-raising flour.) The other main ingredients on this packet are sugar, currants and sultanas, egg, buttermilk.

You might need the preservative if you are making cakes to sell, but probably not if you are eating them immediately at home. They use oil. I would try the recipe with oil and then butter to see which worked best. Not then, not later, at the same time. Divide the mixture into two.

4 How do you make them?
The woman selling the Welsh cakes had her ideas. Like a cake, she said.

The man sitting opposite joined in.

How do you cook them? On a hot plate.

Ingredients
flour
egg
buttermmilk
sugar
oil
vine fruits (sultanas or currants or both)

Here's a Welsh man telling you what to do.
