Supermarket shopping for souvenirs wines and foods on holiday

Problem
We were drinking a lot of bottled water at prices as high as the cheapest glass of wine in the panormaic reestaruant of the five star Pestana hotel in Funchal, the capital of the lovely volcanic island of Madeira.

Answer
So we popped into the nearby supermarket to buy water. Whilst there we had a chance to check out the wine prices. We were keenly looking at wine prices to compare them because we had booked a group talk at the D'Oliveiras Madeira wine store.

Traditonal Foods In Local Supermarkets
When travelling I like to pop into a local supermarket. Find local brands. See what the locals eat. Learn that those foods in sauce which you thought were prepared by the chef can be picked up in the local supermaket readymade.

It doesn't mean that the chef bought from the supermarket. (Although I had my suspicions in Cambodia, after dining in a so-called Cambodian restaurant staffed by imported Westerners and Chinese owners.)

The supermarket supply gives you a chance to read up the ingredients of local dishes. You can take home the readymade item before you try to reproduce it with a recipe.

Quaint old Madeira.
Souvenirs
A grocery store provides items to take home as souvenirs. In Madeira we could see that Madeira cake and Madeira wines might be cheaper - or dearer - depending on location, than the souvenir shops around the island.

I expected all corner grocery shops to be cheaper than the souvenir stores and wineries. If you know in advance what the local supermaket charges for a bottle of wine, when you get to the winery you can see if you are making any saving and if it's worth making an impulse purchse and caryying the goods home and having clutter in the bedroom, or whether you can leave the purchase to the last day in the nearby supermarket, using up leftover foreign currency.

Gifts for family and friends. Know how much the wine on the restaurant menu costs in the supermarket.
