YOUNGSTERS
If you are aged sixteen, you will probably have visited fewer places than your parents, if you haven't had parents in the diplomatic service or the military - or on the run.

Is that always so? No. Youngsters nowadays have more opportunities to travel or be treated to travel than their parents. You can take cheap flights on Ryanair or whiz off on Wizair.

Our son had visited far more places than we had at his age, by the time he was a teenager. This was pointed out by his schoolfriend's father in a count of countries mentioned in a toast at our son's birthday party.

We had lived in the USA when our son was at school, and visited Canada, flown to the Caribbean and Hawaii for holidays.

OLDIES
By the time you reach sixty and start you have added a few more places and are keen to add more. When I took my car into a garage for its MOT, the garage owner said he was retiring because he was afraid of dying or getting too infirm to travel without ever having seen the world.

CHECKLIST
I looked back at the Tripadvisor's list of top twenty destinations, chosen by travellers. I had done all the major ones, London, where I have lived most of my life, Paris, which is en route to most places if you are doing a driving holiday.

Rome and Florence, yes. Lisbon and Barcelona, yes. Krakow, yes. Prague, yes.

Madeira - I visited Madeira again in 2018 as you can see from my earlier blog posts.
Madeira

WISHLIST
My blank spot is Berlin. Look at the Tripadvisor list and see how many place names evoke happy memories or dreams of future trips.
