Dishwasher Warning: foam from washing up liquid and how fire extinguishers work

Guess who flooded the floor with foam?

I ran out of dishwasher tablets and added washing up liquid. I came back to find the kitchen floor half covered in foam and water.

Look on the bright side. The floor needed washing anyway.

I spent half an hour with a huge floor mop cleaning up the foam and squeezing out water. The floor took half an hour to dry.

I asked the family: 'Did you know that you should not put washing up liquid in a dishwasher?'
My family said: 'Yes, we guessed. If you put washing up liquid in a whisk it makes foam.'

If you open the door mid-cycle to add an item, out comes the foam. Leave the door ajar in case you find more things - it could get worse.

Maybe it just forces its way out. I don't know. All I know is that
I added the liquid. I returned to what looked like my kitchen had turned into a Jacuzzi.

I should print a warning notice on top of dishwashers in flats I rent from others or rent to others.

Fire extinguishers
The same applies to foam fire extinguishers. That's how they work. Shoot bubbles and cut off air supply to fires.
You might want both the foam sort and the fire blanket to put over a fire without covering your room with foam.

Now you know how fire extinguishers work. Also to keep a stock of dishwasher tablets.

Don't put washing up liquid in the dishwasher.

Check any property you are renting from others, or renting to others, has a fire extinguisher (not out of date).

Check that you have dishwasher tablets and a warning out not using washing up liquid.
