Covid-19 in a hotel - Make A DIY Dress from two scarves

I was on holiday and saw a lovely scarf. I thought, I shall buy that and make a dress. But the scarf was not big enough for a dress. Only big enough for the front of a dress.

Why Two Scarves?
I would have to buy fabric for the back. Could I cut up an old sheet which was stained or torn and use the good section for the back of a dress?

I looked at the pile of scarves. The shop had a second scarf.

Reducing The Cost Of Two Scarves
The price of two would be more than the cost of a dress. But I did fancy the pattern. I could bargain for a reduction in the cost if I bought two.

I could even have bought a third scarf for a bolero or jacket. And another fourth scarf to make a matching belt, scarf and hairband.

I bought two.

How to Sew And Cut The Scarves
A dress from two scarves (rather than one scarf) requires more sewing, but no cutting. The sewing is simple. What if you are an amateur, not a neat sewer?

Neat sewing is the same as with handwriting. Just slow down. Take your time. Check the size of each stitch. Check the spacing.

In A Hurry
To hide the untidy or uneven stitches, you can sew on the wrong side.

Sew to Relieve Stress
If you are stuck in a hotel on holiday, or in Covid-19 quarantine, you can sew yourself a new dress from two scarves. If the hotel has a sewing kit, or you always travel with an old free hotel sewing kit.

If your thread does not match, you could choose a contrasting colour and sew neatly. Or turn the garment inside out and oversew. When trrned the right way out the stitches will hardly notice.

The hotel iron will finish the seam neatly.

Patterned Fabrc?
So what is the pattern? I don't want upside down elephants. Or elephants on their sides. Or flowers pointing down.

What about fish? Then can swim up or down.

Plan Where To Cut
You can get a friend of family member to mark the place to cut with tailors chalk. Tailor's chalk wipes off easily leaving no mess. Buy it from sewing supply shops online.

On your own with no chalk? Place the garment you want to cut on top of your existing garment. Check if the one you normall wear is ideal.

I tried using dressmaker's pins. I ran out of pins. I kept pricking myself. Picked clips off the nearby clothes drying rack. That worked as well.

Whenever you have two garments together, place a finger or something else between them when taking permanent action such as sewing or cutting.

Lay out a simple caftan or shirt dress or any loose dress or jacket which fits you to see the size of the neck, the width of the armholes, and the length of the hem.

Do You Want It Longer At The Back?
If you have a large bust or bottom you might like to make one section longer, usually the back.
you can also make a plaeat or v shape at the centre front neck, unger both arms for the bust.

Do You Want it Full At the Bust Or Tight At the Waist?
Another way to make it tighter is to add a belt. Three ways to make a belt.

Cut Hem For a Loose belt
1 A piece cut of the front hem or the side. You can leave the belt loose as an option.

Add Retaining Loops For The Belt
Add two small loops on either side of the dress at waist or hip or bust to hold the belt in place so it does not get lopsided or lost.

Extending A Belt
2 Is the strip of fabric too short for a belt to go around your waist and tie a bow? Get it to meet, with a thin ribbon attached to each short end. The bow can tie at the front or at the back.

3 Half belt At Back
Another way is to make a half belt from the waist at both sides, and tie it at the back or sew it together at the back, or to allow you to get into the dress easily, use a sew-on hook and eye set or snaps.

Bra Fastener
If you have an old bra which is the wrong size, or out of shape, or old fashioned style, or stained, cut off the hook and eye set and use that to fasten the neck or waist of a DIY dress.
