Reversible Clothes For Weekends Away And Packing Light

From Amazon

From Amazon

For weekends away and packing light, I used to have a wardrobe of reversible clothes. I had reversible dresses, reversible tops and skirts, reversible jackets, reversible scarves, and reversible rings, bracelets and pendants.

TO BUY

Reversed Back To Front

Make sure a garment is reversible, showing a picture of two different patterns. Some so called reersible garments reverse back to front,. So that you have a V-neck on one side and a scoop neck on the other side.

Many of the garments in your own wardrobe can be reversed back to front. Any garment with a pattern on the front and no pattern on the back. So long as you don't have too much in the way of tucks and pleats on one side. If you do, you can still split the sides to make a reversible tunic.

I have reversed jackets which have a plain satin lining. This works best in a garment which has no stiching showing when it is reversed.

If the stitching is showing, you may have to cover it. How?

Firstly, by wearing a scarf, perhaps pinned over the seam with a brooch. Alternatively, cover the seams wtih ribbon or braid or colourful rope from unwanted paper tote bags.

You may also wish toremover washing labels. I like to keep labels for reference later. You could photograph the label alongside the garment and keep it in a washing instructions folder, either a printed one or a folder in your computer, or even your mobile phone. I also like to pin the washing instructions inside a jacket pocket with a safety pin.

DIY

To make Reversible Dresses, T-shirts, Tunics Or Tank Tops

Buy a simple dress or tee shirt or tank top in two colours. You can pick two patterns which include the same colour. Or two co-ordinating colours. Or two contrasting colours. Sew the two items together with the backs of each outfit facing the other one. The lighter the fabric the better.

You can also buy dress patterns for reversible outfits.

Make sure you use the same fabric and colourse which won't run if you want to wash the garments.

Labels

You might have to remove neck labels and side seam washing labels. You can sew them inside.

Jacket

I found a reversible black jacket very handy when I accidentally turned up at a funeral and everybody was wearing black. Not just the mourners, the immediate family. An entire church of about 500 people.

 Accessories

JEWELLERY

You can buy reversible rings. Two popular types of design. One has a swivelling stone on the top of the band. The other has two bands which fold apart.

BELTS

The easiest to find belts are belts for men in black on brown. Sometimes you can find smaller, narrower, belts for women with black on red.  Or black on white.

If the buckle is removable, clip on, you can make your own belt from fabric in two colours.

You can glue down or sew down two colours. Or add a press stud to make the two sides. Or have two strips of different patterns sliding in and out of the clip. If you see a belt with a slide off clip, even if it is too small for you, buy it and add an extension, or change the belt part and

Reversible shoes are pricey. A cheaper alternative is to buy clip on decorations for shoes.

Some shoes are designed so that you can add colourful ribbons through the holes. I have tried adding coloured hat elastic to keep simple shoes in place. I found you have to sew on the elastic, otherwise it slips off as you walk.

Lace-up shoes can change their look if you buy the same length laces in two colours. If you accidentally buy a pair of pretty laces which are not long enough, try lacing fewer holes to use less length and create another appearance.
