Shahi Maharani Restaurant, Raffles City, near City Hall MRT

Singapore flag

Singapore is known for its varied cuisine and four languages and influences, British English, Chinese, Malay and Indian (Tamil).

Singapore has restaurants specialising in various areas of Indian cuisine. Fish head curry is from the south, but this restaurant offers the North Indian cuisine which was the first Indian cuisine to be widespread and popular in Brtain.

This restaurant, Shahi Maharani, is on my wishlist, recommended by an Indian friend in Singapore. I hope to visit it with a small group in 2021 and report back to you. Meanwhile, here are some essential facts.

Shahi in urdu can be translated into English in many ways, many words, such as greatness, eminence, crown.

Maharani the restaurant's website translates as queen. Like Maharaja but feminine. So, the associations are great queen (of cuisine?). A grand restaurant.

The food which is familiar to me from their menu includes desserts. My family's favourite Indian dessert is gulub jamun, yummy balls in syrup.  Kulfi means milk ices, often served conical, with nutty or fruity flavours.
