Derry/ Londonderry - The Oak leaf County /acorn (derry is acorn in Irish)
Kilkenny - the marble city (nearby limestone quarry gave local houses an appearance of marble)
Lancashire - the red rose county (symbol of Hentry IV)
Sligo - Yeats County; the herring pickers
Waterford - The Crystal County (Waterford Crystal)
York - White Rose of York
London - old smokey - because of the smog caused by coal burning which was later banned and cured the problem

The British are reputed to have a stiff upper lip (not displaying emotion).
Is this true?
I can only give you my experience. When I was a child in the 1950s and 1960s, my mother told me:
"Don't talk with your hands - it makes you look like a foreigner. Don't make faces."
The Scots are reputed to be stingy. Lots of jokes about this. no longer acceptable to say so.
