What the hell can you do in Hull? The Museum Quarter. Statues of anti-slaver William Wilberforce and poet Andrew Marvel

Hull has a museum quarter featuring William Wilberforce, who campaigned against slavery.

Dress sculpture, Kingswood, HullEast Riding of Yorkshire, England. This metal sculpture of a dress is in front of the Next store and the Gino D'Acampo My Restaurant at Kingswood Retail Park. There is nothing nearby that I could see to explain its provenance or relevance to the site.

Two famous characters came from Hull and contributed to the history of Hull and the history of England. William Wilberforce trail starts at the house where he was born and ends at the monument to him.

My other favourite is the marvellous Andrew Marvel, honoured by a statue.

    • Close of a speech in House of Commons (1791), as quoted in Once Blind : The Life of John Newton (2008) by Kay Marshall Strom, p. 225.

He wrote a poem, to his coy mistress:

The grave's a fine and private place,
But none, I think, do there embrace.

      He also wrote:

Art is long but life is short.

      • Upon the Death of Lord Hastings (1649), last line.
