The name of László Bíró (‘Leslie Judge’) is known worldwise because the Budapest-born newspaper editor invented the eponymous (named after a person) biro. Seeing fountain pen ink ran and smudged paper, Bíró with the help of his brother, György, a chemist, create a pen with a revolving tip - a ballpoint.

Bíró patented his pioneering everyday object in 1938, abut being a Hungarian Jew, he was forced to flee Nazi-occupied Europe. He settled in Argentina, where his biro was produced and his pens helped RAF aircrew during bombing missions over Germany. Bíró died in 1985 – but lives in our memory every 29 September, when Argentines celebrate his birthday on the nation’s annual Día del Inventor.
