The Tanglin Club's Churchill Room Restaurant - What I recommend

We had booked out dinner time slot online. We were delighted that out Tanglin membership cards automatically opened the door with one tap. 

The stop by the door of the Churchill room restaurant required only a wave of my card over the machine to read that I was good to go.

Seating
Regarding seating, I would have preferred a wall banquette which offers somewhere to put your bag off the floor. However, my husband was happy to accept the designated round table in the centre of the room, because it was lighter and brighter.

The manageress quickly brought over a chair for my handbag to keep it off the floor. Why? On the floor it could get dirty. The straps could trip up me. Or trip up the waiter. On the chair it was visible so I need not worry in case it was lost or stolen. I was less likely to leave without it - and have to go back to retrieve it. It was handy if I wanted to reach for a hanky.

Drinks
I ordered Prosecco in the Churchill Room restaurant, The Tanglin Club. A good Prosecco, good taste and good bubbles. A glass big enough to allow you to sniff and sip.

A glass of water was already provided.

I ordered the larger size of the watermelon juice. I could have had mixed juice. 'No ice,' I said. 

One pint watermelon juice. Neither my husband nor I were thrilled with the look of the chunky mug. I would have preferred something like a sundae glass for a more elegant effect. Maybe with a carafe as most sundae glasses won't hold ta full pint.

Now for the food. Time to wear my napkin.


I like the colour. White napkins scare me. I am afraid to get lipstick on them. I don't want it to get dirty, especially, if I have to leave it on the table if I get up to go to the bathroom mid-meal.

It has a handy buttonhole in the corner so you can fix it to the top button of your shirt or blouse. I must remember to wear a button up blouse to the Tanglin club.




The amuse gueule, as they say in French, or appetizer, as we say in English. Crab on the left. Salmon on the right. Perfect presentation. A feast for the eyes.

Next the main course.

Crunchy batter on the onion ring. An onion ring in batter is an item which can be so wrong or so right. Here it was so right.

Beef striploin, as the Americans say. In Britain it is called sirloin. The story goes that a royal was so impressed by his steak, that he named the cut, sir loin. I asked for medium rare and it was perfectly cooked. It was not running red and raw in the middle. Neither undercooked in the middle nor overcooked on the outside.

Mashed potato. The main reasons, the deciding factor in, why I chose this dish, was because it included potatoes.

Only one carrot. But I was not hungry. I had three sizes and shapes of mini mushrooms to keep my mouth and eyes and knife and fork busy.

Delightful dessert
Crepes Suzette cost another 15 dollars per person. One was enough for two. 

Crepes Suzette is a drama for the maker and the watchers. It was a soft pancke. Not the crispy sort you get at Mont St Michel. The Churchill Room provides a perfect pancake.

But I ordered a second dessert for myself.

The Churchill Room

Set meal, three courses, 68 Singapore dollars.


Amuse guele. A crab and a salmon bite. Delicious. Tasty and crunchy in a shell which seemed like popcorn or crisp popped rice.

I told the waiter, "I am allergic to shellfish." 

He replied, "It's not shellfish. It's crab."

My husband and I decided we would simply swap half of each so he got the two crab bites and I had the two salmon bites.

Starter, salmon and eggs.


Main course

Beef with mashed potato. Beef striploin.


The pork was pleasant. Not exceptional, but pleasing.


Dessert

I could have opted for Mango pudding. I think vanilla ice cream is boring, unless vere well done. I opted for a dessert with coconut ice cream. No coconut impacts, not strong bits to bite, unlike Bounty bars which clearly contain dessicated coconut. But a nice faintly coconut after-taste.

The finish with a flourish was coffee with a biscuit

The Churchill Room restaurant is closed Tuesday and public holidays.

Dining in October 2021 in Singapore was limited to two diners per table. 

Money evening is bring your own bottle. They charge corkage.
