Divali, Diwali, Deepavali - what is it?

Where will you see Diwali greetings and festive fun and foods?
Diwali is an official holiday in these countries (listed alphabetically) Fiji, Guyana, India, Jamaica, Malaysia, Mauritius, Myanmar, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Trinidad.

Features to notice on the Deepavali greeting above: hand held lights, sarees, green colour, the word deepavali.  

Deepavali is celebrated in India and by communities worldwide. You have probably seen colourful images and greetings on the internet and in WhatsApp and other messages. Here is a summary:

Celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs.

Triumph of good over evil.

the favoured colour is green.

coloured rice, or powder or sand is used to create patterns on the floors of homes and public buildings such as shopping malls.

Some areas celebrate for one day (in 2021 Thursday, November 4th).

However, in North India the celebrations continue for four days.

What to wear? Indian women wear sarees.

Indian families buy new clothes.

Lights are lit in small bowls.

Symbols are peacocks and swans

Individuals and groups send greetings.
