Photo opportunities & Gifts at Heathrow & Airports - What's In The Caviar Shop? For kids?

Angela Lansbury sitting in the Union Jack chair at the Caviar shop, Heathrow Airport, 2022. Photo by Trevor Sharot.

Welcome and farewell Photos
At the airport, when departing and arriving, I look for a picture featuring the country. If you have your camera ready, you might catch a welcome sign or statue at the approach road to the airport.

Statues & Symbols
The approach road to terminal 2 at Heathrow has a globe. Symbol of the world.

Fast Photos
By the time I had turned on my mobile phone, and dialled in my passwo rd to open it, I was too late. My phone has a bypass instant camera symbol for just this reason. I ought to practise using it. Outdoors, in daylight, in theory you get better pictures.

Chair Styles
However, at Heathrow this year, inside the terminal, I found this neat union Jack chair. I could not resist sitting in it for a photo. Later, looking at my photos, I see things which I did not notice at the time. The style is a traditional Victorian armchair with a buttoned back. But recovered with brightly coloured, modern fabric to give it a modern look.
For comfort, it has wide, curved, cloth covered, solid arms with wood at the vertical front. The legs are old-fashioned turned wood legs.

National Flags
In Duty Free shops there were numerous souvenirs with union jacks. I usually take one photo of myself with the object, and one without anybody.

Vertical Versus Horizontal
You might also take a vertical picture and a horizontal picture. A vertical picture would be good for a magazine cover or the opening slide in a presentation. But a horizontal picture might suit the top half of a pace or slide with text underneath.

Souvenir Shop Opportunities
Most airports have bottles of wine, spirits, or non-alcoholic drink, biscuits, sweets (Americans say candies), fridge magnets, soft toys, and magazines. You might choose a newspaper or magazine or calendar to show the date, from a shop, or the flight arrival time

Security
I photograph products to buy, not photos which show the airport. Security might forbid taking photos in airports.
What about your own caution? You might not want to reveal the layout of the airport, or the fact that you are away from home.

Cyprus Airport
On arrival in Cyprus we saw pictures of local attractions and a map. On leaving, we found shops selling wine bottles and rose sweets (not Turkish delight, not Greek, but Cypriot.

Heathrow's Caviar Shop
In the caviar shop you could buy wine and bottles of booze.

What about children, or grandchildren? I spotted some soft toys. Pink. Aquatic. What were they? Fish? Salmon? They cost ten pounds.

Other shops for families,  biscuit boxes with pictures of H M The Queen. shortbread biscuits. All kinds of food with wrapping depicting the Union Jack.

For Children
For children, the general big souvenir store area with magnets and soft toy bears. Hamleys shop. The Harry Potter shop. Before you enter the escalators to your departure gate, there is a children's play area.

What Do Scary Secret Codes In Announcements On the London Underground Mean?

Bank Station exit sign. Photo by Angela Lansbury. Copyright.

I was exiting from Bank station, in London, when I heard an announcement, Code 4. What's that? Something so bad they have to keep it a secret!

I was alarmed. My mind raced through scenarios. Was it a bomb? A madman going berserk? A drunk? A body on the line? At this station! Further along the line? A drunk. A man with a knife?  A fight? A fire? Did I need to run out of the station? Look for an exit?

Later, back at my desk, I looked up the codes. Most of them are not nearly so alarming. Just numbers about spills, needing cleaning, which will be in one place and probably nowhere near you.

Why not be more specific if there is danger? In one case, tecthere was a false alarm when somebody shouted fire in the USA, and in the stampede to evacuate, more than 70 people died.

So, if you hear code 4, no need to panic. Don't run. Don't change direction. Don't worry. Keep calm. Carry on. As my husband says, 'It's not your problem'.

Historic Hatch End Station and Britain's Best Blooms

Flowers on Hatch End station. Cross the bridge for this pretty platform for trains into London, Euston, via Harrow & Wealdstone. The waiting room is a refuge in winter. In Singapore I can get an underground train in under ten minutes. Ironically, everywhere except the branch to the airport, Changi, where you really want to hurry. In London, England, (not London in Canada), you can get frequent trains from Pinner Met (Metropolitan) line. However, if you don't read the timetable, dilly dally looking for lost doorkeys, repacking your handbag, going back for an umbrella, and miss a train at Hatch End station, at least you have the lovely flowers to look at, especially colourful on a sunny summer day. Britain at its best.  If waiting around for trains is not your favrouite thing, you can follow the map on the wall of the platform pictured, reading   which is the side for the trains to bustling Watford with its indooreadi shopping mall and many outdoor shops. If you don't live in Hatch End and want to escape,

Statues in Sweden, Uddevala, the Shell-bank town near Gothenburg

Statues of otters in Uddevala, Western Sweden.

Statues in Uddevala, where friends of a friend paused for a photo opportunity.

Uddevala is a seaside haven, in the west of Sweden near Norway. The nationality of this small town was tossed back and forward between the Swedes and Norwegians, a fishing and boat-building place. These industries declined and died, but now it is gradually growing again.

A waterside boardwalk has been built around the steep cliffsides. Maybe you hadn't heard of Uddevala before. Neither had I. The nearest, well-known big place is Sweden's second city in size, Gothenburg, also listed at Gotheburg, which has a Volvo car museum.

The smallest statues are called statuettes or figurines.
The Shell Bank Museum has shells on display in a low, wide building at the base of a grassy mound with white paths, by the river. See pictures on Tripadvisor.

You might have memories of reading about a sculpture park. That is in Oslo, so, if that interests you, hop across to Norway.

The Old Bridge Hotel & Riverside Restaurant, Huntingdon, for a lovely lunch and delightful decor

This historic hotel is on the riverside and is run by a Master of Wine and has a wine shop on the premises.

River Ouse seen from the car park of the Old Bridge Hotel as you arrive. Photo by Angela Lansbury, copyright..

We booked a table and drove up from north London to one of our favourite restaurants. Now that the Harrow at Little Bedwyn has closed down, the Old Bridge looks likely becoming our favourite for a special meal out, out of home, and out of London.

The car park is beside the green tree-lined river. The hotel has greenery covering walls and patio tables.

The bightly lit restaurant has brick walls, big mirrors and blue-green banquettes.

The sourdough bread and butter was tops, chewy bread, and tasty butter.

I began with a glass of Prosecco. The shaped thin glass seemed slightly better than most glassware offered by restaurants.

Toilet Temptations

I dashed down to the ladies toilets beside the bar. The wallpaper features fish.

If you fancy the handwashing gel and/or the moisturizer, both are on sale in the shop. I don't understand why all hotels and restaurants don't do this.

The gents toilet has different wallpaper. Bottle theme.

We chose from the set menu.

Seriously Special Starters

Beetroot starter. Photo by Angela Lansbury. Copyright.

My starter was a small deep bowl of deep beetroot purple colour. Yes, beetroot. Not the creamy Polish and Jewish style borscht. Certainly not the transparent Russian style borsht. Much thicker. With a Greek yogurt texture white blob submerged. Delightful. I used the last of my sourdough, French style, I mean in the fashion of diners in France, to sweep every last morsel. Compliments to the chef.

The grilled broccoli was tasty. Cooked just right. No alarming black.

Main Course

We had a choice of three dishes on the set menu. Our main courses were different. Leaving out the vegetarian option, one was a pork pie, the other fish.

Main course. Pork pie.

Dessert

My dessert option was summer pudding.

My husband chose cheese.

The coffee could be accompanied by breads.

By the time we had finished lunch, the tea time crowd were enjoying three tier stands of sandwiches, what looked like scones and cakes. I was wondering whether I could sell my home and move into a hotel for a year. But I would double in size as there is no gym nor swimming pool.

Shopping For Souvenirs

Before leaving, we looked at the shop, which had wall to wall wines, a description of the owner, a Master Of Wine, and an Enoteca machine which allows you to buy a card and select tastes of different sizes, small, tiny or teeny of various drinks. for those not driving home. If you are driving, you might buy a bottle. Or look at the gifts, which are different seasonally and on my every visit. This year, this month, they had paper folding origami sets, tea towels.

Traditional tea and coffee. Brown and white sugar cubes. A milk jug in blue Willow pattern.

Free to See - Exhibition of Banksy Paintings & Murals - Billionaires Welcome To Buy! And Would-be Billionaires!

Getting to Banksy via Bank Station

Directions from Bank station to the Royal Exchange. Photo by Angela Lansbury. Copyright.

I recommend a visit to see Banksy paintings at the Red8 Gallery in the Royal Exchange near Bank station in the historic city of London. Seeing Banksy may cost more time than you expected - firstly allow twenty minutes for the seven to ten minute walk from Bank station, Underground. I went up 14 stairs, along a corridor, an escalator, another corridor, another long escalator, past the wide entrance to the Elizabeth line, Another corridor, a circular corridor past numerous exits at which point the Royal Exchange is marked as Exit 3. Out of the exit; you are faced with a magnificent building, Britain at its best.

The Royal Exchange

Royal Exchange, London, exterior, photo by Angela Lansbury, copyright.

Yes, you can enter the Royal Exchange, even if you are a mere pleb. Inside is a shopping mall, with the glamorous bar of Fortnum and Mason in the centre.

The welcoming and helpful doorman courteously walked me to the right hand exit where I turned left, following his smiling and nodding instructions. As he had told me, only a few paces brought me to my target, the delightful Red8 gallery.

Red 8 Gallery

The frontage is  a window, and  inside around the ground floor are sensible sized Banksy paintings which you could hang on any wall in any office or public building or home.

For details on the red8 name see the previous post.

Prices

To find more details and prices if you are interested in buying, hold your phone up to capture the QR code by each picture. I didn't do so. I was too busy discussing the paintings.

Discussing Banksy

Upstairs is another room with framed paintings all around. You can spend an hour here, enjoying looking at each one, guessing the implications, and discussing with your spouse or companions what the symbols and absurdities signify.

Not everyone agrees with Banksy's political opinions. 'T' said, "I don't agree with all his views. He is anti war. One of his dividing wall murals, he has scrawled the word Palestine. Wars tend to have a baddie against a goody and the goodies have to fight, or the baddies take over the world. We might agree repression is bad. He is also saying which side he is on. Not everybody would agree.

"But you must admire his skill. Every picture captures your attention. They are so realistic. He captures the people."

Prices

What if you want one? I did not see any affordable postcards, unlike London's national and modern gallery shops. I discussed prices with a PR person, a visitor, who was considering buying one. He said: "I am interested purely from an investment point of view. Now that I am retired, I buy items as an investment and sell them. I bought one of the Banksy paintings and the price doubled. It was a good investment."

I went there on opening night. I was probably invited because I am a blogger and a journalist. But you could have signed up online, another guest told me.

Banksy is not the only artist available. On their website you can see prints at three hundred pounds and up.

Fair Cop

Outside was a benign British bobby. (For any American readers, a bobby is a cop.) He was happy to be photographed with me. I wasn't sure whether he was protecting the paintings, the people at the gallery, passers-by from drunks, drunks from traffic, or the passageway along the pavement. Or was he just curious to see the picture of the cop by Banksy? I didn't dare to ask.

Banksy Near Bank Station = what does Red Eight Mean?

Banksy Exhibition in London

From tomorrow, Saturday August 26th, 2022, you will be able to see a Banksy exhibition near Bank station in London. (London, England, UK, for anybody in the USA or Canada, who thinks of London , Canada, where my forwarded post went when I left the USA to live in England and various PR agencies sent my post to London, without specifying which London, and my post went to the nearest London which was in Canada.)

Yes, so Banksy near Bank station in London, England.

The address:

Red Eight Gallery, 9 The Royal Exchange, London EC3V 3LR.

The red eight gallery was given that name because the number 8 and the colour red are Asian favourites. After moving to Singapore, when I selected a new email, I chose memorable numbers 8 or 88.  The number 8 in my email when I found the numbers one to four were already taken I thought of jumping to lucky 8 or 88 which  are short and easy to recall.   The founders wanted to appeal to Asians who might be interested in investing in British Banksy.

So, there you have it, easy to remember, exhibition of Banksy near Bank station, Red Eight Gallery.

Open to all, free entry.

How to wash and dry your hair when travelling

Worldwide, Hairdressers and Hotels

If you can afford it, for special occasions you can often find a hairdresser in or near a hotel. However, apart from the expense, you are likely to lose the effect as soon as you go swimming later that day or the next day. When I go to the hairdressers, I ask them for an easy to maintain cut and style and a demonstration of how I can wash and dry my hair quickly using a shower and  hairdryer in a hotel on holiday.

When you go into a hairdresser's, anywhere in the world, they wash your hair in a wash basin. In countries with four seasons, when it is too cold to undress for a bath and show, using a wash basin to wash hair used to be the case and often still is.

This is what everybody did in the UK when I was growing up. If you were lucky, the shower attachment over the bath would stretch over the basin. When you are in hotels, in a hurry to wash your hair, when dressed, you can still wash your hair in a wash basin, but watch out for low central taps which hit the top of your head.

On one occasion, before a trip overseas to see a boyfriend, I cut off my long hair from breast length to shoulder length so it would dry quicker. My potential new man was not pleased. He said, "What I liked about you was your long hair. Now, you've cut it off."

Later, he phoned to say he was in a taxi or car, being dropped off at the hotel, so please be ready, dressed to go out. I jumped in the shower, washed my hair in the shower, got into an evening little black dress and was washed and ready when he arrived. He was impressed with my speed.

Swimming Pool Shower

On another occasion, I was on a travel press trip to Finland. We arrived at our hotel late, a quarter to 7 and dinner was at seven. I asked, "Can we try the sauna, before or after dinner?"

The answer was, "Sorry, the sauna closes at 7"

In my room, I opened my suitcase, took out my evening dress, and thought, I have just time to take a two minute shower and put on my dress and race to the dining room. What a pity there was no time to shower, go to the sauna (so I could experience it, photograph it and write about it), and run to the dining room.

I took off my travel clothes, saw the bathrobe behind the door, put it on in case somebody knocked on my door.

I thought, I must photograph the sauna, even if I don't have time to use it. I picked up my swimsuit and evening dress and took the lift down to the basement sauna. Nobody there. I dipped into the pool, washed off and washed my hair in the shower, dried off in the sauna with the towel, put on my dress, and run to the dining room, with my swimsuit in a gold tote bag. Several other people, inlcuding the VIP host, arrived after I did.

Somebody apologized to me for not having enough time for me and everybody to see the sauna.

I replied, ""That's okay. I have a picture, and I've tried it, so I can write about it."

Next morning, a fellow journalist said to me, "You were joking about having seen and used the sauna, weren't you?"

I was astonished that he had questioned my determination and veracity. I showed him my pictures of the sauna.

He was astonished, and impressed. Mission accomplished. I felt much cleaner with washed hair.

 An American Woman's Hair Routine

In the USA on a travel press trip, a glamorous lady who edited a travel magazine had long, shining hair.

We enviously asked her, "How do you get such lovely hair?"

She replied, "I wash it every day - in the shower, when I have my morning shower."

UK Hair Washing Habits

That was back in the nineteen eighties when in the UK most people had baths, and washed their hair once a week, on a Friday night, ready for the weekend, in a wash basin.

Modern Hair Conditioner

If you don't condition your hair, you risk having fly away hair which increases in volume and tangles, irritating you.

Singapore

Now, living in Singapore, humid Singapore, where you shower at least once a day, in the morning, and if you are at home, often morning, lunch time, evening, even four times a day, in a cold shower to cool off,

I often wash my hair in the shower. Having wet hair helps me stay cool at home at the desk or out on holiday In summer in the UK, Washington DC and the USA, beach holidays in Europe, out for the day driving around Cyprus, and Singapore all year.

In any case, since Covid, I have been swimming daily to help me with weight loss. I needed to lose weight. Covid strikes hardest at the elderly and overweight. I could not get any younger, but I could lose weight. So I swim in the condo swimming pool every morning. Wearing a swimming cap.

Swimming Pools - Swimcap rules

You are supposed to shower before entering the pool. To wash off any sun cream, as well as to be clean. And loose hair goes in the shower instead of clogging up the pool filters.

You are supposed to wear a swimming cap. I have read an article by an American woman outraged that a swimming pool overseas insisted that she wears a cap over her long hair, and if she does not, she buys one from them, at what she considered an inflated price.

Many people like to swim with their hair loose. This is banned at swimming pools. You are supposed to wear a swimming cap.

Why? Mainly for the health and cleanliness of the pool water. Dandruff? Head lice? Firstly grease, not from greasy hair, but hair oils used by men and hair sprays and conditioners used by women. Equally importantly, hair is sucked towards the filter.

Long Hair Accident

If there is a Jacuzzi, or you swim underwater or dive, it is for your own safety. In the UK, in north west London, where I live, a girl lay her head back in a Jacuzzi and end of her long hair was sucked into the pump inlet. The lifeguard who was on duty gave her mouth to mouth resuscitation under water, for several minutes. He had to keep doing this for several minutes, whilst the security guard ran to the nearby office to find a pair of scissors. She survived.

I read about this in the  local paper. I wrote a reader's letter, saying, "The lifeguard should get a commendation in the newspaper's award at the end of the year to local heroes."

When I went to visit my local GP (UK wording for general practitioner, what Americans call personal physician), the doctor said to me, "I saw your letter to the local paper. I agree with you!"

So I shower before leaving home - I want to smell fresh. I might meet somebody in the lift.

I prefer to shower at home rather than in the shower beside the pool which sometimes has mould growing, or live or dead insects underfoot. Once the shower tray was already blocked by a long leaf fallen off from the nearby palm tree.

After the swim, you are supposed to rinse off to remove the chemicals from your swimsuit. Why? To remove the chemicals which keep the pool water clean. The pool attendants should be checking the quality of the water every morning before anybody starts swimming, and keeping a record, for health and safety. The chemicals eat into the swimsuit fabric and shorten its life.

An Indian's Long Black Hair

This year, In Swanwick, Derbyshire, England, at Writers' Summer School, I sat beside an Indian woman who had lovely waist length black hair. I asked her, "How long is your hair?"

She stood up to show me, smiling, "I often get asked!"

She was very proud of her hair.

I continued, "If you don't mind me asking, how often do you wash your hair - and how do you dry it?"

She replied, "I wash it every day. In the shower."

I asked, "In the morning?" I was wondering if you bothered to dry it with a dryer or let it dry hanging loose.

"No. Last thing at night."

"Ah. How do you dry it?"

"I don't bother drying it."

I gasped, open mouthed in astonishment, "But doesn't that make the pillow wet? You have wet hair on your face?"

She continued, "No. I make a long plait, from the top of my head. I push it up over the pillow and out of my way. It dries overnight."

There you have it. Now you know. One woman's solution.

Don't ask to be taken to a brothel! French 'false friends' translated - cars, casinos and stores are not what you think they are

We received an extending rod to open a high in the roof Velux window. We read the instructions in other languages and came across a word we knew in English, stores, which clearly meant something else in context. I looked it up in translate Google and the answer came back, blinds. I reversed the direction of the translation. The translation for the English word blinds was the French word stores.

My husband mentioned that; in France; he had seen another confusing part of a two language pair. The word was occasion. My online search produced the occasion, not the word which I was expecting, sale, but the word opportunity.

A look at the Wiktionary page reminds me of lots of trouble you could get into. For example, ask to visit a casino in France, and you might end up in a brothel! Be careful what you wish for - and be careful what you say!

Convert An Overseas Meeting Time to your clock time - with time converter buddy

I just tried checking time conversion between Singapore and London. I used to use time and date converter. However, today online I got the run around, directed to an old website, not allowing this year's date, went to a new website, could not align the two countries I wanted. I logged out and did another search for a website.

I found time buddy. Instant results. I did not get a date for next Sunday, but the UK's daylight saving does not end in August so 24 hours difference, Saturday to Sunday, will not cause a change.

Daylight Saving Clock Change Dates

The daylight saving dates in Spring and Autumn are different in different places, different countries in the Northern and Southen hemispheres. The seasons are reversed from London, Europe and New York and the USA for meetings down under in Australia. So the Australians are changing to spring when we up north are changing to Autumn.

Not the same dates. You might also find lots of calendar changes in Canada and the USA. For example, mothers day and mothering Sunday are also different around the world.

According to my checks today, a meeting in Singapore (Braddell Heights Advanced Club) at starting at 4 pm is much better than their previous timing of 2 pm, because it is 9 am in the UK. The meeting ends two hours later at 4 pm Singapore time, which is 11 am UK time.

I told several people at 'Swanwick' (Writers' Summer School at The Hayes Conference Centre, Swanwick, Derbyshire) about the meetings. So they need these two times.

Write early, write about contrasting characters: Sunday lessons learned at Writers' Summer School, Swanwick 2022 - what I learned and wrote in the main morning course session - people I met later

Lift Up Your Pens (Before Breakfast!)

Despite being tired from driving London to Derbyshire on Saturday, and staying up until gone eleven at night, I was up at 7.30 a.m.. showered and dressed, ready for the Lift Up Your Pens, writing exercise help held every morning at 8 a.m. before breakfast. Five sessions, Sunday to Thursday. It is great to start the writer's day, having already learned something and written something before breakfast.

Main Course - Script Writing

After breakfast we started our first Main Course, which for me was scriptwriting, play writing. I chose that because I wanted to try something new. I had previously done courses on poetry. We also had other sessions on poetry.

The main point of the introduction was that the dialogue (and any on stage action) should be creating tension by questions and conflict between a character and themselves. (Think of Hamlet's monologue, to be or not to be, or as the Japanese translate it, to do or not to do).

Alternatively conflict between two people. We were given a sample script of conflict between two characters, the householder and the tenant asked to leave. Over the course of the three initial sessions, we created a scenario. Scene one with the householder's motive. She wants her boyfriend to move in.

Every sentence should move the action forward. No making or drinking cups of coffee unless they contain poison.

The scenario we developed was that the lodger was a lesbian in love with the householder. She accuses the unemployed boyfriend of being a money grabber, and confesses her love.

Scene 2. The householder then phones the boyfriend to tell him she has changed her mind, and wants the tenant to stay. He cannot move in.

The boyfriend knows what is going on. He is angry with the tenant. He announces that he will be arriving as he planned - with a gun.

Evening - Meet & Greet Friends To Be

At Meet And Greet evening, an old friend, another Angela.

The evening activity was meet and greet. Tables were arranged in a circle. With pairs of chairs facing each other. We had two minutes to interview the other person and get to know them. Swap roles. Like speed dating without dates. Then the people on the outside moved one chair to their left. (Anybody with mobility issues was in the inner static circle.)

We had a list of questions to ask. I thought the questions were silly. Asking an author, 'what are you reading?', or, 'what is your favourite book?' should have been replaced by, 'What book are you writing?' Or, Tell me about the books you write or intend to write.

What I learned about best-selling books at Writers' Summer School, Saturday Start at Swanwick in Derbyshire, August 2022

The Hayes Conference Centre, Swanwick, Derbyshire, England, UK.

Writers' Summer School takes place every year in August at the Hayes Conference Centre, in Swanwick Derbyshire. It starts at tea-time on Saturday and continues until breakfast on the following Friday.  This year it was August 13 to 19th.  I drove from London up the M1 motorway towards the exit 28 after Derby, my car with a suitcase packed, crammed, with 7 daytime and 7 evening outfits, fancy dress, a glamorous outfit for the last night party, and several of my books to sell in the bookroom. I was anxiously watching my speed, and the distances, hoping to reach the Hayes in time for tea, when they serve cakes. Coffee and hot chocolate and drinking water are available all day, free, from machines. I made it in time for tea and enjoyed lemon drizzle cake.

Splendid Saturday - Meeting Other Authors

Book Room Sales

I placed my books in the book room, using a small stand to raise a couple of the books. I was very pleased to sell two books, and sign one of them, Quick Quotations for a new friend, Steve, who bought my book on quotations because he collects books of quotations.

My friend, Carolyn Street, who I know from Toastmasters International in Singapore, had displayed six of her books. She sold them all, and I had written chapters in two of the books. I had a chapter on Authentic Writing For Your Audience in Authenticity & Us, and a chapter called How To Unblock Writer's Block in Fear & Us.

Ambassadors

At the first night's dinner ,Carolyn was with the newcomers on a table with a couple of the old timers who volunteered to be Ambassadors. Next year I shall be an ambassador. One thing I discovered for Carolyn was that the Lakeside bedroom block has a guest laundry room with washing machines and dryers.

Who Was Our Opening Speaker - and What was her best-seller book title?

Our after dinner speaker was the author, Erin Kelly, author of a crime novel, The Poison Tree. I had looked that up earlier and found she had cleverly copied the oxymoron title from a chilling, short poem by William Blake.

Which Books Pay Most?

She entertained us, telling us how her book, the Crime Novel, The Poisoned Tree resulted from her being told by her agent that crime books sell most and pay most to the author. She got a laugh with the contrast of how she had no interest in writing crime novels, but when told how well they paid, declared she had always wanted to write a crime novel.

Another interesting fact she told us was that she took two years to write a book. I aim to write a book a year in order to have something new on the table in the Swanwick book room each year.

Romance Writers

After a brief refreshment and bathroom break, I joined the Get to know you group session. I sat at the romance writers' table for a photo. But ended up with the short story writers.

Next year, Saturday 5th - Friday 11th August  2023.

Amateurs and Professionals welcome. The bookings will be available from November.

Angela Lansbury has blogs on travel, dress, speeches and more.

Adventurous Menu at L'Aventure, smart London restaurant - with our hungry, omnivorous, bored, baby as a challenging diner

A French restaurant in England.

Should I show a French fag or a UK flag? A UK flag becaue the country is the UK.

My husband had visited this restaurant a couple of years ago with family but without me. He remembered it well, and could repeat conversations from the evening. Now it was my turn to go there with family.

Plus Points

My first impression was good. Outdoor seating. Candles on tables. Romantic.   As you can see from the pictures, the tables have white fabric tablecloths.

Cosy - a quiet side street, with smart cars! And protected from passing sights and sounds, or fumes, by a high hedge.

Yes. Elegant. Cosy.

Service & Welcome

A posse of three waiters to greet us.

Service And Seating

Hot and cold keenly anxious to please running waiters.

I was happy to be given a table with a banquette against the wall where I could have my large bag on the seat beside myself. (I needed to reach inside and produce a toy to distract the baby. I had a home-made puppet with a moving head. The baby was very good.)

The restaurant interior is small and appears to be only on the ground floor of a double bay window house in a block near the corner of the road. I have to negotiate with a large potted plant to reach my chair.  I have a large handbag, a long skirt, and long plant leaves put me in a nervous disposition. The waiters do not hold the plant back.  The plant is not budging.

I go around behind it. I change my mind. Whilst the others are parking the car and bringing the baby and her seat, to strap to a dining chair, because she pushes over a high chair by kicking out her feet so a high chair topples backwards, I shall go to the toilet.

An authoritative Madame in charge was agitated that our table of four with a baby had been given a table by the front window which she said was reserved for somebody else. Madame in charge appears, in a huff. "You are the ones with the baby!' She accuses me.

That round table by the window has been booked by another party. We can have any other table. This one? That one? A third?

Great. I see a table with a banquette on one side. It is hemmed in by a smaller table at the far end, by a wall this side. The staff realise we four diners need room on the end  for the baby seat. We all contemplate. I hesitate to ask for the tiny table to be moved, temporarily, if not permanently. One waiter has a double dose of initiative, probably borrowed from his companion, and moves the tiny table with the lamp and pumpkin.

Would I get out fast enough in a fire?

Toilets

I am off downstairs to the toilets. Inconspicuous sign for ladies on door which is propped open.

One cubicle. Washbasin with teeny towels like face flannels to dry your hands. (Do Americans call flannels wash cloths?).

I take photos of myself in the mirror. My last chance to get a standing photo for my dress of the day blog, as I shall be sitting all evening. My son appears. I point out that he is entering the ladies. I step out and he obligingly agrees to take a photo of me with my mobile.

Upstairs on the ground floor (Americans would say first floor) we play musical chairs around the small table.

The Menu

The menu is a sheet written in italics in French. I would have liked some explanation of the presentation of each dish, the accompanying vegetables or sauces, and portion sizes, a recommendation as to which is the favourite of the waiter or the diners. This is not an American diner where the waiters expect a tip and have a rehearsed speech about each dish.

Covid precautions have disappeared. Neither staff nor diners are wearing masks. My family are sharing drinks and food.

Drinks

I had a glass of champagne. Good enough.

The red burgundy wine was pleasant, not too biting. I am not a red wine drinker.

The waiters efficiently try to clear away empty glasses from those not drinking red wine. I sip the burgundy wine from somebody else's glass.

It's good. I am the only person in Britain, indeed the world, who is still nervous, ignoring all precautions, except not kissing baby, nor adults, nor shaking hands, but still nervous.

I have a glass of bubbly.

Prices

Fifty pounds for three courses for dinner.  (Forty five for two courses. 12.50 for a glass of Champagne. I never got to see the drinks menu. A glass of Sauterne is mentioned on the menu after the desserts.

My family said of the prices, 'It sounds a lot, but you would pay more for top restaurants in central London. Years afterwards, you have a good memory of your evening there. You are paying for a treat. None of the dishes are anything I would or could do at home."

Bread and Olives

Our baby, my grand-daughter, aged under two years old, liked the bread and olives. We had to ask for more bread.

Baby Verdict On Bread, Olives and Food

Later, she liked the carrots and broccoli. She cannot speak yet, but she gave the vegetables ten fingers. She ate most of it with both hands. (When she is not keen and loses interest in food, she drops it on the floor.)

Starters

Our starters were: Mine - salmon in pancakes. Different. Full marks for presentation. Two long thin pancakes rolled up like white cigars in a sea of sauce.

Taste? Okay. For some reason I was expecting the salty bite of medium quality smoked salmon and it tasted like plain salmon. No wow factor with taste. But it had looked good.

Two other diners ordered rabbit terrine. Rabbit. Also different. You don't get that in McDonalds.

The most dramatic looking starter was globe artichokes. Presented with the leaves flattened around the outside of the plate like a clockface with the heart in the middle. Excellent presentation.

Why is nothing wowing me? Have I got Covid?

In an era when Covid precautions are over, but some diners will have long Covid, knowingly, or unknowingly, food presentation is even more important.

Main Courses

For main courses, we, one couple, chose the veal for a minimum of two persons, (cote de veau which is side of veal or rib at the side or cutlet). Tasty.

Another diner chose the fish. One of the two fish dishes offered. She is a picky eater. She can ruin your meal if she finds the food too spicy. She was happy.

Baby Verdict

Baby also liked the carrots and broccoli. She cannot speak yet, but she gave the vegetables ten fingers. She ate most of it with both hands. (When she is not keen, and loses interest in food, she drops it on the floor. Sometimes she wrinkles up her little face in disgust, and chucks the morsel away.

I feel like I am watching a cricket match. Or badminton. She is throwing or bowling.

Our team of adults are rushing to catch. Her parents on either side rush to catch. Sometimes they are distracted by adult conversation. As umpire I have to interrupt, 'She\s going to throw it!'

If she is bored, and decides to scream, we will have to leave the restaurant and go without dessert. If the waiters or the people at the next table provide enough distraction, she is amused and we can stay.

She was wonderful. The mother had forgotten (or chosen  to forget? - maybe unconsciously?) the baby's dummy.  Luckily, I had remembered to bring a new toy. I have a DIY puppet whose head pops out of a kitchen roll tube with a rod like a thick knitting needle. I am chief children's entertainer for the evening.

Desserts

Another person chose isles flottante.  I did the same.

Mistake. First of all, I did not like it at all. Just white sugary nothingness.

Secondly, the French is plural. It is usually presented in a large dish with a series of mounds or islands in a sea of sauce. We each had one island.

As there were two diners ordering the dish, it could have been presented with two islands in one large dish. I suppose that nowadays with covid-19, people don't like to share. So the waiter could have shared out the portions, just as they pour out the wine to each person in turn.

I got half way and put down my spoon. Unlike me. I had scraped up every morsel of sauce from the main savoury dish with the bread, French style.

Maybe I was full. No. I could finish an entire box of chocolates. But not the isles flottante.  Another diner, my son, noticed my unfinished dessert. He asked for it.

I ended up swapping with the person who was half way through their chocolate dessert.

Chocolate Dessert

The first mouthful of the chocolate was great. But a whole round tennis ball of chocolate was too much and my taste buds no longer detected chocolate by the end.

To be fair, I must admit that we all gave our blueberries to the baby, who thought the blueberries were fabulous. She ate them one at a time, and did not throw one of them on the floor.   I suspect that the blueberries would have counteracted the sugariness of the two desserts which lost their appeal.

Apple Tart - French Style

By far the best dessert, to my mind, was the apple tart. The freshness of the thin slices of cooked apple, were complemented by the perfection  of the circle of apple slices in the circle of pastry.

If I were to go there again, I would share a dessert and opt for the 45 pounds two course meal instead of the full fifty pounds. That would

reduce the price and the calorie count.

Best Plus Points

1 The bread and butter. The breads included one with seeds. We had olives with the bread.

2 Best starter - artichokes.

3 Best main course - veal.

4 Best dessert - apple tart.

5 White tablecloths.

Any Negatives?

1 The toilets are down a flight of stairs. For anybody with mobility problems, not ideal. That can't be changed.

2 No chocolate with the bill. They might consider changing that.

3 High prices. But I like a set meal, so I know the cost.

This is just the opinions of four experienced adult diners and one novice baby. Finally, did the restaurant live up to its name? Yes, it was French. Yes, it was a culinary adventure.
