Port Lympne House and Zoo, glamorous hotel and glamping in Kent

The mansion was built for Sir Philip Sassoon. He entertained Charlie Chaplin and painted a room yellow because he found out that was his guest's favourite colour.

Sir Philip was pictures visiting the front in WWI, and with the royal family and Churchill.
Aspinal bought the place because he needed room for his zoo animals.

I first visited it for the day years ago and was shown around the house. I remember seeing a huge lorry (Americans say truck) which was used to transport elephants.
Now there's a hotel so you can stay on site.

Portraits of Sir Philip Sassoon are in the National Portrait Gallery, London, as are portraits of his cousin, the WWI poet, Siegfried Sassoon. The National Portrait Gallery website has a Sassoon family tree.
