Christmas crackers, a feature of Christmas dinners in the UK. They were invented by confectioner Tom Smith, whose family still is involved in the name and cracker making. A monument to Tom Smith is in London.

Crackers are called crackers because when you pull them apart they make a crack sound. A cracker usually contains and folded paper hat, a joke printed on a tiny piece of white paper, and somtimes a small toy or gift, such as a pencil, or key ring, or sewing kit, or plastic puzzle.

NB You cannot travel with xmas crackers because they contain snaps which release sparks.
Unless you make your own without the snaps.
You can order DIY xmas crackers from Amazon and make them up without the snaps for travelling.

Finsbury Square, fountain in memory of Tom Smith who created the Christmas cracker.
