Safety at events such as wedding venue, fire alarms and clothing

Don't wear a wedding dress or any dress which prevents you from running from a building in an emergency or getting into a toilet cubicle.

Check the fire extinguishers are up to date in your home.

Sit near an exit.

Know where the exits are in any vehicle. Know whether it is quicker to go forwards or backwards in an emergency. One man who survived an emergency in a railway carriage said he knew how to get out because he had checked for the exit on his way in. When the lights went out, he knew which way to run. Also check if there are windows which open.

I don't like underground restaurants and malls with no windows or nearby fire escapes. All major buildings should have weekly fire drills. We used to have these at school in the UK.

You might be able to get a free fire check from your local fire brigade. For example, they sometimes offer to check electric blankets.
