I read about a dispute regarding whether a wedding invitation addressed to family included the four children. Afterward the bride's mother complained to her (the mother) brother because he brought all four of his children.
Why is the bride's mother involved? Either the bride did not want to cause trouble after the event. Or because the mother was paying, and the caterer charged extra for the extra people.
Fire Regulations
Also, fire regulations limit the numbers in a room so you don't get killed in a stampede during a real fire (as happened recently) or when the drunken best man sets off the fire alarm for a joke.
Unruly Children
Sometimes children are invited to the ceremony but not the reception which is late at night, past their bedtime, and costs money for expensive seated dinner.
Unruly children can run around, collide with people carrying plates or wedding cake, stick their fingers in the communal plates of food, knock over wine glasses or pick pieces off wedding cake and topple the wedding cake.
In other cases, children are invited to an afternoon reception. They are not invited to the ceremony because you don't want a ceremony interrupted by a crying baby or a child asking to go to the bathroom, singing, or running up and down the aisle.
Kiddie Corner
I attended a lovely wedding in Singapore where the bride at the reception arranged a children\s corner which was cordoned off, with playmats kiddie food, kiddie sweets, and kiddie teeny toys they could play with and take, as well as, going home gifts. The bride had lots of nieces and nephews and a huge wedding.
The reception was 10 am to 4 pm, with family only in the morning (all ladies wearing traditonal covered up Muslim clothes) and friends in the afternoon. the afternoon was fine for children and so family did not need babysitters.
