Brighton - Where to stay and eat, what to do (Pavillion, Pier, Sassoon, Thistle)

I stayed at the Thistle hotel in a Toastmasters International conference for the humorous speech contest (UK south region).

Thistle hotel
What does the hotel have - great location with the Brighton pier at the front, so the hotel is easy to find and has views of the pier from font sea view bedrooms (high price) and many of the public meeting rooms.

At the back of the hotel you walk into The Lanes, twisting streets of restaurants, pubs and shops.

If it rains - the hotel has a small, deep indoor pool, sauna and steam room.

What else?
Central atrium. Bedrooms with views of sea or jolly, modern atrium where lights change colour.

Cost
Not cheap, but good for a weekend away.

What's not to like?
Adjacent car park charges £20 a day. We shopped around but could only save a fiver (five pounds) and would have had to keep going back a distance to the car. (We had a lot of luggage with fancy dress costumes).

Where to eat?
See my review of Sam's restaurant on Tripadvisor.

Soft polenta, wonderful. I've been searching for this for years since I had it in Switzerland. Most restaurants serve a disappointing deep fried polenta. Full marks to Sam's for this dish alone.

Landmarks
The Sassoon Mausoleum, Brighton

The new pier with the big wheel next to it. The burned down pier nearby.

The Brighton Pavilion. OK, you know all this. Bet you didn't know about the Sassoon mausoleum, like a bit off the Brighton Pavilion, on the corner near my favourite restaurant. Look up Sassoon Brighton. It's now a disco.
