Night Lights In the Streets of Singapore Celebrating Navaratri In and Around Little India

Street Lights Celebrating Navaratri in Little India, near Mustafa's department store and Farrer Park MRT. Photo by Angela Lansbury.

The festival runs from September to Wednesday 5th October 2022. The festival celebrates the god of power, the Hindu god, Durga.

I asked, 'Will the lights come down on the last day?'

An Indian Singaporean friend told me, 'The lights will probably stay up until Deepavali'.

That's the Singaporean way of doing things. Street lights and decorations to attract visitors and maintain morale of office workers and shopkeepers stay up from one festival to the next, so that you have something to enjoy every day of the year.

I was on my way from Mustafa's 24 hour department store to the nearby Farrer Park MRT (mass rapid transit, mostly underground railway).

Looking closely at the decorations, I can identify musical instruments and flowers. Also flames and multi-coloured stars. The colours are red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple.

Navaratri means nine nights. Nava is nine. Ratri is nights.
