Gaudi's Cathedral and Another Eccentric Cathedral by Martinez in Spain

Martinez

Gaudi's cathedral is not yet finished. He is buried inside it. Gaudi's cathedral is one of the great attractions if you visit Barcelona on the East coast.  The name Gaudi has been given to the street alongside another eccentric Cathedral  The man, the monk, who constructed another cathedral, east of Madrid, without planning permission, from waste materials, has just died. On Sunday November 8th 2021. Aged 96. He, too, like Gaudi, wanted to be buried inside his cathedral.

He was a Trappist monk. His name was Justo Gallego Martinez. How do you remember his name? As I suspected, Martinez means son of Martin. Wikipedia explains:

'Martínez is the most common surname in the Spanish regions of Navarre, La Rioja, Cuenca and Murcia. ... It originated as a patronymic surname, meaning "son of Martín" (English: Martin).'

Justo is a Spanish and Portuguese name. It is derived from the Latin Justus. It means, just, honorable or upright. His middle name, Galego, means Galician.

When he was ill with tuberculosis, he prayed for recovery to 'our lady'. He promised that if he recovered, he would build a cathedral in her honour. He duly recovered. He kept his word and built an extraordinary building.

He had no architectural knowledge or plan. He drew the outline, in his family's field, on the ground. He copied various elements of VIP buildings. The Italian dome of the Vatican. The American lobby of The White House (the one with the neo Greek Portico).

Although he was donated bricks by a nearby brickworks, huge amounts of the building were constructed from recycled materials. Bits of old bicycles. Broken glass. Oil drums for the pillars! Amazingly, the building has been declared architecturally sound, by a recent survey.

At first, family, friends, and the Catholic church, and local people and VIPs, thought he was ridiculous. Then they had to admit that his building was successful, if odd.

However, now that recycling is all the rage, his building may be taking it place on the tourist circuit, and amongst buildings which are not just weird, but admired, and to be emulated.

Christmas tree light up, Tanglin Club, Singapore

Angela in front of the tree before light up. Photo by Trevor Sharot.

The president of the Tanglin club gave a speech from half way up the grand staircase overlooking the tree and the hall. If I remember rightly, and I rarely do, he started by addressing the parents about the year of Covid-19 and it challenges, and how we had to adapt and prepare and hope the new year would bring good and better circumstances.

All the children received a goody bag from Santa.

The mustard colour Boho lace dress and scarf. Dress of the day 292

Angela Lansbury in mustard yellow colour dress. Photo by Trevor Sharot.

I found this dress online when I was in London. I was looking for something like my Ann Balon dress which I wore at our son's wedding. Ann Balon dresses, even on sale in the shops and online, are expensive, and heavy.  I looked for dress and matching scarf, lace dress, two piece dress.

I found this dress listed under boho which is short for bohemian. It had several features which I liked. The matching top and under-dress. The lace inserts, known as godets.  The long sleeves which hitch up.

I was disapointed in the colour because I was wearing vibrant reds and royal blues and green. However, the mustard goes perfectly with blonde hair. And with gold-rimmed glasses.

I thought the dress was dull and the sleeves were too heavy for Singapore. However, in Singapore you can be quite cold indoors in an air-coonditioned restaurant. Outdoors, you might want your arms covered to protect yourself from the sun or mosquitos, or people passing with Covid-19.

Angela Lansbury in mustard yellow two piece dress and co-ordinating scarf. Selfie photo by Angela Lansbury

This dress has appeared on my blogs from the UK and Singapore. I have it in mustard yellow and green. I have hunted all over the internet, trying to find the same or similar again.

The scarf

I love the scarf.  If you look carefully, you can see that the pattern is also flowers, but not quite the same. However, the colour matches exactly.

You can get the same or similar scarf with lace edging to the short end and tassels very cheaply from China on ebay.

Jurong Point Shopping Mall

Huge Shopping Mall in North West Singapore, an area known for its malls. This one is busy and crowded.
Jurong Point shopping mall. Central indoor atrium. Photo by Trevor Sharot.

Seating for eating. Tall palm trees (real or fake?) stretching up to the light from the transparent ceiling.

Two levels visible here. But add in the basements. As you can make out on the right, it gets quite crowded, even midweek.

In Singapore we have had eating out allowed only for two but now the numbers allowed have increased. But with the latest bad news, enjoy eating out whilst you can.

This mall is not the largest but has the greatest number of outlets. The mall has been extended twice. Once was when the MRT railway station was built alongside.

What can you find here? Starbucks. Courts.

One legged rowing on the Lake Inle. This reminds me of when I was a child on a scooter. I used to push along with my right foot on the ground.

To get your head around the layout of the land, think of it as a dog's head looking to the sea on the left. The long thisn neck is in the south. Going north, the first city you come to used to be known as Rangoon.

Burma or Myanmar - What Armchair Travellers Need to Know and See

I have a Burmese or Myanmar national in a Toastmasters club. I began wondering which national holidays she might be celebrating, so that I could include them in a calendar of events for 2022 and meeting themes.

Burma is the old name for the country, now called Myanmar, but Burma is still used. Here is the flag.

It has yellow, green and red horizontal stripes, very colourful and  jolly. The colours are made more pronounced by the contrasting five-pointed white star in the centre.

The yellow symbolizes solidarity. Green means peace and lush greenery. Red represents determination. The white star stands for unity.

I had to rename the flag with both of the country's names, Burma and Myanmar, because I could not find it saved on my computer.

The country is large, huge.

Cities, Sights and Landmarks

Golden Rock, Burma/Myanmar

Myanmar/Burma, Mount Popa

The language looks very pretty, all curves, but very difficult.

Numbers[edit]

Burmese numbers follow the Arabic system of numerals.

၀ (thoun-nya)သုည
၁ (tit)တစ်
၂ (hni)နှစ်
၃ (thoun)သုံး
၄ (lei)လေး
၅ (nga)ငါး
၆ (chao)ခြောက်
၇ (kun hni)ခုနှစ်
၈ (shit)ရှစ်
၉ (koe)ကိုး
10
၁၀ (se)ဆယ်
11
၁၁ (seh-tit)ဆယ့်တစ်

What is the difference between the Italian Christmas cakes Panettone and Pandoro?

Panettone

Panettone I have known for years in London. The Italian restaurants serve it. The Italian caffes and delis sell it. The supermarkets stock it before, during and after Christmas in all sizes.

It comes from Italy. But also Spain. Our Venezuelan member brought it to our self-catered potluck party one Xmas at Harrovian Toastmasters in NW London, England.

The name means little bread, or modified bread. The best is like a roll or cake.

Panettone looks like a smoothed out pyramid or cone with an undulating edge. The simplest is plain, but you can also get it with raisins and increasingly other flavours. One year Tesco was selling tiny ones in three flavours, plain cake, plain cake with added currants, and chocolate flavour cake.

If you are expecting a cake, it's at first disappointing to find it is more like a bread. On the other hand, it is extremely more-ish. And it keeps. I had one in a tin for well over six months, high up in the kitchen. It was still edible. Maybe slightly drier.

If you don't feel it is eating quality, but still too good to waste, you can always turn into into toast. Or make a bread and butter pudding.

Next, what is Pandoro?

Pandoro

Pandoro

Pandoro

Over in Singapore I see pandoro for sale in Fairprice supermarket. What is the difference between painting and Pandora. As you might have guessed, pan d'oro means bread of gold. Gold in colour and flavour, and quality.

I was shocked to read that only three or four centuries ago, in Italy, the same as probably most of Europe, including the UK, the poor people, the majority, ate black or brown bread. Only the rich could afford white bread. Nowadays, even the poorest person can eat white bread. The supermarket choices would be unimaginable to our grandparents or great grandparents and ancestors.

As for panettone and pandoro, these were not available when I was a child in the UK. What a choice we have nowadays.

Pandoro is supposedly from Milan.

Tesco, this year, as before, offers a chocolate panettone, but I prefer the original.

One pound fifty pence, for a 100 g  version, from Tesco, GB.

Bukit Panjang Xmas Lights and goodies to buy

Bukit Panjang Xmas decorations.

As you see in this picture a lovely large central display of green symbolic trees in green, gold five point stars, red hangings, a wreath, vertical hanging strands of gold glitter.

In the Fairprice supermarket you can buy Xmas theme paper plates by the checkout. At the other end  of the supermarket is a dedicated section on Xmas. Gifts include decorations and wrapping paper and wide ribbons for wrapping gifts, Xmas themes, pink, red, fabric, but rough feel, suitable for decor, not for making clothes).

The mall is on three levels. Other shops include the small Japan Home, Bata which has reductions on shoes, Starbucks. At the top is the library.

I looked at Fairprice online and typed in Christmas in the search box. Up came the wreath, the ribbons, and Christmas pudding digestive biscuits. Also garlands, synthetic xmas trees, red A shape Santa hats and short red Xmas socks (for gift caddies - like xmas stockings but shorter. Also fairy lights, baubles. The hampers contained mainly alcoholic drinks and chcocolates and Christmas cards. Santa costumes for adults and children. Glitter top hats for a dinner or party, five pieces, in red, or blue, or silver, or pink, or black, or green.  Rheindeer headband. Pandoro.

Lithuania, the great Vilna Gaon and Extraordinary Synagogues With Paintings or Birds and Animals

Lithuania has an extraordinary past, present and future.

Napoleon admired it.

The old cobbled streets have a heritage status from Unesco.

There is also a new town with stunning skyscrapers.

But the old synagogues are extraordinary. Here is a synagogue with paintings showing animals such as a lion and a humped camel or dromedary. Birds fly across the ceiling.

A lovely lassi, and a terrific Vegetarian Thali including cheering kheer dessert

We exit from Mustafa's multi-storey deparement store on the edge of Little India ready for a drink - and opposite is a vegetarian Indian restaurant offering mango lassi. Loocation, location, location, said Hilton. He was right.

As soon as I know that they serve lassi I am ready to try the restaurant. We sit down. We order lassi, mango lassi. The lassi is in a tall waisted glass, orange-y yellow. Thick liquid. Not cold. Not over sugared. But satisfyingly thick. More of an appetizer than a drink.

My husband orders beer.

We sit in our banquette booth, admiring the decor. Truly Indian, Hindu, many Gods, many styles. Chandeliers hang above us. I recognize the gopi girls dancing in a picture on the wall opposite. Further along is modern art, colourful.

The menu is also varied, offering many vegetarian dishes.

Bread and Thali
We start with crispy bread like flattened balloons with hollow centres. (Poori.)

Then the Thali, a tray of food. Luckily my husband immediately recognizes what looks like rice pudding is a dessert for later.

Something is spicy. But we have white rice and white yogurt, and glasses of water. They even have a box of paper tissues on the table.

Thali at Indian restaurant. Photo by Angela Lansbury. The nearest plate shows the squashed balloon shape poori underneath a flat cracker poppadum. The Thail (tray dinner) has white rice in the middle, white yogurt, rice dessert (kheer), and four vegetable curries. You can see the potato in the bowl nearest me, the photographer.

Dosai
The dosai rolled pancake is too crispy for me. Dosai always is too crispy for me. I am a paratha person and like to chew my bread. However, I am easily pacified by potato filling in a masala dosai.

Kheer
The rice pudding dessert we soon identify as kheer. It is not quite rice pudding. It is cooked with ghee, clarified butter. Notable differences are the addition of nibs of nuts. That absolutely makes it for me.

You can make it with rice or tapioca. Add currants or sultanas and nuts (almonds or pistachios).

The final delight is the view of a box of Indian desserts. I don't know when we will return, but they deliver all over the island of Singapore.

The Berkeley Hotel Restaurant - What is a Five Star Restaurant?

The Berkeley Hotel is centrally located and has an excellent restaurant. I went to visit it when I was trained to recognize hotels as being one star, two star, three star, four star and five star. The Berkeley was five star. To be five star, everything had to be authentic. Solid wood, not veneer or plastic pretending to be wood.

When I dined there, the waiters showed, me, at my request, how to fold table napkins.

It is hard to recommend a particular dish at a five star hotel restaurant because they will be changing the menu regularly with the seasons and a dish of the day so that no diner finds that there is nothing new to try.

When my husband went there is 2021 he understood the chef had come from the Mandarin Oriental just down the road in Kensington. (Or was it somet other hotel or restaurant?) It is a small world. Chefs play musical chairs.

New Bike? Saddle up! Tips on buying Parts, Clothing, Helmets, Locks, Magazines, Bars, Events

Mountain Bicycle saddle. Photo by Angela Lansbury.

After you have spent money on your bike, mountain bike, motorbike, or scooter, your next purchases are upgrades, accessories and clothes. Trevor is a keen biker, motorbikes and mountain bikes. He has done training courses on circuits with champions. He avidly watched YouTube videos on riding. Taking corners. How to balance on a motorbike differs from balance on a mountain bike. How to repair or adjust or upgrade the parts of your bike.

Bike Lock

Before you even go out on your bike, shopping in an urban area, you need a security lock. The locks are attached to a thick black part which you attach to something strong and immovable such as a railing.

The bigger, stronger ones, which resist a little bolt cutter, are more expensive, thicker, and heavier to carry.

Some areas or a town or city are more prone to theft than others.

After buying your lock, or upgrading it, next you need your clothes to go out.

He says,

Cycling Clothes - Shorts

'Bikers like to wear close, thigh-gripping shorts when cycling. If you wear loose shorts, they tend to get caught on the front of the saddle when you get on and off.'

Motorbike Clothes

Motorbike clothes have more protection Padded knees and elbows. Hot to wear.

Expensive. Look at them in a shop. Are the seams sewn securely. Sealed. Is there lining? Padding?

Ask the assistant for advice. Then buy more in the sales.

Eventually the stitching of gloves and suits will go. Or you fall off and a layer of the leather or fabric has scraped off. That's good. That would have been your skin if you had not worn the protection. It has done its job. It is worth the money. But time to buy another one, or bring out the spare.

Rain

Thunder and lightning sign in China. Photo from wikipedia, signs in China.

You might want to carry a rainproof poncho. A rainproof poncho is hot and sticky. So you have to look for a safe place to pull in when it rains to don the outfit. Wait in the shelter.

Motorways in Singapore have shelters for bikers under some bridges. Look for the umbrella sign. The same applies in Malaysia.

Sign for shelter without distance marked in Malaysia.

Malaysian shelter for motobikes sign, with distance of 200 metres. From Wikipedia, road signs in Malaysia.

You can also buy a tiny umbrella to cover your mobile phone.

Bike Helmet - photo by Angela Lansbury.

Helmets

You might want a spare helmet for a passenger. If two members of your family share a motorbike, and occasionally you go out together.

'If you already have a bike, then you buy a motorbike, you need another helmet. The same applies the other way. For a helmet, you obviously need adequate protection. But cycling helmets are not the same as motorbike helmets. Motorbike helmets have to be much stronger. You are likely to fall off a bicycle, but you could be catapulted through the air from a motorbike. Motorbike helmets have a visor protecting your face. They are heavier to wear.

'A cycling helmet for a bicycle, or mountain bike, just covers your head. Then you wear a face mask when you walk into a shopping mall.'

Branded Scooter/Motorbike parts - real or fake?

'I have been buying parts to upgrade an old motorbike and an old bike. You go on the internet and you can see the prices for branded goods are high from the manufacturers. What are the branded goods made of?

'If you saw gold at a very cheap price, you would suspect it was gold-plated or an alloy.  The same applies to the metals in component parts.

'Is it really titanium or stainless steel or aluminium? Is it strong enough? Flexible enough? Rustproof?

Brand Names

'I sometimes draw up alongside a scooter at the lights. I can see that parts on a cheap Scooter have famous brand names. I see parts which cost as much or more than a second hand scooter. That's absurd.

'I don't know whether the owner knows the parts are fake and just wants to look good.  Or whether the owner has been misled by the fake goods.

Buyer Beware

'When I buy, I look down to the specifications. If you saw something advertised as a diamond in the headline, but under product description, you read cubic zircona, you would know it's not a real diamond. If it says diamond in the headline and doesn't specify what it is in the product description, again, that's a warning sign. When buying parts, I compare the manufacturer's specifications, then I compare Lazada and Amazon.

I have had more success with Amazon. But no website can be 100% guaranteed. It's not their fault. They have hundreds of items from third parties. They can't check every one. You can return goods. Keep the packaging. Look at it before you open it. Keep the labels and packing slips.

I often lose track of where I ordered an item from. It arrives from some address overseas.

(Angela's note: I have the same problem with clothes. Did I order from Amazon, Lacada, Ebay, Etsy, Shein? The solution is to to keep a copy of purchases in your diary, or a dedicated notebook, or a folder, or in notes on your mobile phone. I write down what the item looked like on arrival, and a month after use. I give feedback and note it. Also, I add anything I didn't say in the feedback, such as I didn't like the look of it when it arrived, or it looked great. I might change my mind later. This is not only useful when you want to return the item. It is handy if you want to re-order for a friend, as a gift, or for yourself as a replacement or spare or another colour a year later.)

Finally, photograph everything. Yourself on the bike when it is new to prove it is yours. (A thief could claim you have stolen the bike from him when you try to retrieve it!)

You might want a picture to show at a mall or airport or police station when reporting the bike or helmet or key is missing. Or even a missing person. Insurance might want a picture of it. You might want to show that the bike was new and got damaged in the car park or on the plane or bike repair shop.  They can't say that parts of the item, or paintwork, was damaged already when you left it if you have a photo showing it in pristine condition hours before.

In Singapore you can hire bikes, Segway (Single large wheel vehicle).

Cycling alone is lonely. But in November 2021 the rules have changed to allow up to 5 persons from different households to meet up. Please check the latest regulations.
