Oddments On The Road - Snippets from Sulawesi Island In Indonesia

Tomatoes

Driving along, you see a truckload of tomatoes. Two youngsters are throwing tomatoes out to the side of the road. Why?

Guide, named Christian, explains. "The boys are throwing out over-ripe tomatoes. By the time they reach the shops, those tomatoes would have turned to mush."

Ripening Coffee

Yellow coffee beans are being ripened on the road. The bean are spread out on fibre mats.

One lady has two mats, one either side of the road. The gap between them is just big enough for a bike or scooter to make its way through. But not big enough for a car. So the motor carrying the tourist climbers on their way to or from the mountain has to stop and wait.

The lady goes to one of the mats and rolls it up.

The motor car passes through.

The lady goes back to sit by the side of the road.

The most unusual item in Indonesia is not the living but the dead.

English: Lemo burial site in Toraja. Tau-tau, the statue representing the buried people, can be seen in niches on the cliff.
Bahasa Indonesia: Situs pemakaman Lemo di Toraja. "Tau-tau", patung-patung yang menggambarkan orang-orang yang dikubur, tampak di ceruk-ceruk di tebing.
