Swimming Safety and Ten Commandments For Swimmers

We need signs warning of dangers, including numbers of lives lost, fines for swimming in rivers, and free hours or days at public swimming baths, advertised by rivers, maybe barriers too.

Every child should leave school with a personal and community safety certificate, covering knowledge and tests on travel safety, walking, crossing roads, buses, escalators.  Outdoors, gardens and parks, walking, running, hiking, mountains. Indoors, keys and locks. Fire, fire exits. Work Professional safety, laws, job opportunities, police, army, forensics.

Here are my first thoughts. I and you can add to this.

1 Food - food safety - edible and non edible plants, identifying plants, cooking, cleanliness of kitchens, displosal or waste to avoid attracting unwanted birds animals and reptiles. Food storage and preparation, cooling, defrosting

2 Pets/wildlife - health and safety, laws, and wild animal safety.

3 Water - Swimming and diving safety. Rescuing. Holding rescued swimmers from behind so they don't pull you down.

4 Roads - safety for pedestrians, drivers, passengers, protecting cars.

5 Drinks - drinking Water safety. Soft drinks and sugar. Alcohol, low and no alcohol.

6 Mind Matters. Anger management. Preventing or stopping fights safely. Controlling depression and preventing suicide.

7 Streets - awareness and self defence. Litter and recycling. Scaffolding. Road crossings. Bus stops. Parking.

8 Outdoors. Hiking and Mountain climbing safety.

9 Travel. Train safety, and crossing safety. Plane safety. Cars, MOT, petrol. Not running out of petrol. Car keys. Safety locks. Hot cars. No pets or children left alone in cars.

10 Your body. Adequate Sleep. Nutritious Food. Exercise.

What are the ten commandments for swimmers and rescuers?

1 Babies can learn to float.

2 Children can learn to swim. See videos and learn at local pools one to one with instructors. Give swimming lessons as birthday presents.

3 Don't walk near canals and rivers when drunk. You could fall or be pushed.

4 Diving safety. Don't dive into unknown areas. There could be rocks.

5 Avoid rivers. There could be crocodiles, broken glass, parasitic worms, strong undertows, metal items, dead animals.

6 Beaches. Understand flag warning signs. Recognize tsunamis - water receding before flowing back, sounds of alarms, warnings on phones, signs pointing to higher ground.

7 Don't drink. Swallowing or Drinking water can be unhealthy or dangerous.

8 Don't swim in outdoor clothing. It gets heavy when clogged with water. Impedes arm and leg movement. Avoid blue swimsuits which camouflage and conceal bodies of children underwater from quick rescue.

9 Learn the language of the country you are visiting. Can you shout for help, or answer a yes-no question? Use Duolingo and Wikiphrase.

10 Put barriers around swimming pools and ponds in public buildings and homes, and at riverbanks and canals.
