Photo From The Past - A Ski Slope Birthday Cake - Travelling With Cake

I have been clearing out drawers, throwing out old holiday brochures. Amongst old family photos I found a picture of a ski slope birthday cake.

It was made for our son for his 13th birthday. He now says he would like the cake again for his next birthday.

The original cake was made by the hall where we had dinner. The venue included the cake in the cost of the dinner party. It was the year of my mother's 80th birthday so we had a big party.

Every supermarket, well, at least, most, has ready-made cakes. Sometimes reduced.

But what if you want something unique? I asked a local caterer with a shop in my high street the cost of a speciality cake. The cost was one to two hundred pounds. Of course it's a lot of cake. And decorating. And tiny ornaments.

The simplest way to make a cake is to get a ready-made plain cake with white icing on top from a supermarket such as Marks and Spencers. Which may have to be ordered a week in advance.

Then you add your own decorations. Allow a week for them to be delivered.

How would you make a mountain on a rural scene on a cake? You cut off the top half of the corner of the cake. Attach it to the opposite corner.

Add the white icing. Make a groove for the ski slope. This could be a straight line, a stepped diagonal downwards. A spiral. A C shape. Or a figure of eight. On the lower half of the cake or from the peak.

Then add the trees. Easy to find at Xmas time.
