Safety at Sea - Spain, Riptides, Swimming Pools

Flag of Spain.

I read about a family who lost two children and nearly lost the father. Swwimming in the sea in Spain.

The beach had lifeguards until 8 pm. And yellow warning flags flying.

Why not red?

Maybe when no lifeguards, there should be red signs.

Unfair to endanger life guards.

Here are some elementary ideas.

1 Teach children and parents to swim.

2 Teach swimmers how to swim in riptides.

3 Warn about dangers to avoid in swimming pools. (1 Blue swimsuits becoming invisible. Don't swim backwards in a lane towards other people. I was hit on the head by the arm of a faster swimmer in a UK club's swimming pool the slow lane. For years afterwards I was against using that club and their pool, not connecting my dislike of the club, and the swimming accident, until I wrote a blog with one story following the other.)

4 Maybe the life guards should use loud hailers and warm people to stop swimming after 8 pm when life guards leave the beach.

5 Impose a fine for swimming after 8. To cover the cost of all the late night rescues. To discourage people from swimming late at night.

6 Advertise alternatives, such as swimming pools open in the evening.

7 Have a last order or last swim session, before life guards go off duty.

8 Cordon off the sea front at night, just allowing a photo spot.

Do you have any other ideas? Please write to me. Comment on the newspaper articles. Write to your British MP (ideally the one in the area of the family involved, if you live there. Write to the Spanish tourist boards and safety authorities.
