What to buy in Andorra - shopping and eating tips

My family phoned from Andorra and told me: 

 .We are at the ski resort of El Pas de la Casa, skiing"'

  We just stopped for lunch."'

Food In Andorra Ski Resorts

"So I thought I'd phone. It is a typical ski resort. Everything is pizza, meat, cheese and bread. The restaurants also have fish and vegetables. They like octopus in Andorra, which is odd, as it's landlocked.

"For dessert, there's crepes, very French. With chocolate or cream, or both! 

"But nobody is fat. You are in the mountains. Outdoors. You are walking up and down. Or skiing. So everyone is fit and healthy. 

 "El Pas de la Casa is only one mile from the French border, but everything (to do with crossing the border) has shut down because of Covid (in December 2021). 

"Alcohol and tobacco are cheap. It is like England used to be ten or twenty years ago. Everything you eat and drink and smoke is unhealthy, but nobody is bothered. You can buy a pack of 1,000 cigarettes, which is enough for a year. To encourage you they stick a bottle of vodka on the side.

"We are staying in a three star hotel because over Christmas and New Year everything is expensive, but despite that it's all booked up. Pricey and full. So we picked a cheap 3 star hotel, which is well located. For Christmas and New Year we have had to eat early at 6.30 (pm).

"I went skiing. 

"While I'm skiing, she (my wife) goes shopping, looking after the baby - which is a full time job, looking for a restaurant for dinner, and eating crepes.

"Crepes are served with a layer of hot chocolate and then cream. Everything has four inches of cream.

"The first two days we stayed in the capital. 

Since I was going skiing, my wife went to the big spa for a treat. We bought her a waterproof cover for her camera. 

"It was busy, queues everywhere, to get from one zone area to the next. She tried the haman.  

"We stayed in the Panorama hotel which is a way, away, a few miles from the ski resorts. The hotel is half way up the mountain, overlooking the city It is 15 storeys high. The reception is in the middle, on what they call zero level. You go up seven floors to the rooftop pool, which is indoors. Then you go down to minus five, to street level."

3D picture of Pas de la Casa, ski slope, Andorra - and how to make and show panoramas and 3 D photos

 

El Pas de la Casa ski slope, Andorra. 

The name means the pass of the house, and it originally had just one building, a shepherd's hut. But it is the highest ski resort in Andorra, with great snowfall from late November of December, open until April and miles of snow and ski lifts. You may see it spelled differently according to which language is being used.

I think I can see the shadow of the photographer. However, the shadows to the right lean the other way.

You can see the circular building to the right on the mound. And skiers with skis and poles.

St Peter's Feast is held on the 29th of June.

Choose - which weather pools?

If you are doing winter sports, snowboarding and skiing in winter, and hiking in summer, you might not need extra exercise. On the other hands, you might want to relax in a pool after skiing, and to socialise with non-skiing family.

Hotels have outdoor pools for swimming in summer, other hotels have an indoor swimming pool for winter. On Tripadvisor you will find many hotels. You can specify swimming pools and other features. The only well known international hotel names I spotted were Novotel and Mercure. You can also look for apart(ment) hotels and suites if you have a special diet. And location, especially, in snow or bad weather if you want to walk to the shops. And parking, covered parking and free parking.

In the capital, two notable hotels are the Panorama where my family stayed, and the Eden Roc on the main shopping street.

In the square you see the Xmas tree, gold colour decorations of parcels and Santas, plus angels blowing trumpets, back left, and five point stars on poles.

 Do you want a top floor bedroom facing the centre, or looking up at the hills, or a city centre hotel so you can park and walk along the pedestrian only outdoor malls and piazzas?

Ski Centres and Sights in Andorra, near Spain and France

You can take a one day guided tour to Andorra from Barcelona, or drive there for a longer stay. My family drove all the way from near Gibraltar in the far south of Spain in December 2021 in order to go skiing.

As you can see, it is quite small. The capital and largest city is Andorra La Vella, slightly nearer Spain in the south by road. En route you pass Sant Julia de Loria, and Santa Coloma, on the CG-1 road, which runs along the river.

Continuing on north to the east on the CG-2 road, you pass les Bons Encamp, Canillo, Soldeu and Pas de la Case.

Compare with the flags of Spain and France. Spain also has a motif in the middle. The French flag is red, white and blue.

Gran Valira, the largest river in Andorra, flowing through Sant Julià de Lòria in the south.

Just south of the capital is Santa Coloma.

Notice how high the mountains are above the city.

From Santa Coloma you are only about 2 kilometres from the major city.

3 Andorra La Vella

The capital and largest city.

See 1 monuments in the garden, sculptures and a tower dovecote, the Criminal Court with carved wood panel walls and carved ceiling, the wooden doors of the cupboard of the seven keys, the modern auditorium upstairs.

Skiing

Ski resorts

Most of these resorts were once small mountain villages which have grown due to skiing. The resorts have joined together so that your ski pass covers neighbouring areas. As a result there are now two large alpine skiing areas known as Vallnord and Grandvalira.

Vallnord covers Arcalis and the Arinsal-Pal ski area. Arcalis is quite distant away from Arinsal-Pal but the latter have been joined up by a cable car connecting the two ski areas. The Arisnal-Pal ski area is directly accessible from La Massana right from the middle of the town. 93 km (58 mi) of trails.

Grandvalira covers Soldeu and Pas de la Casa. 

The Soldeu ski area is also accessible from Encamp and Canillo. It has 193 km of ski slopes between 1710–2640 m. The surface of grandvalira is about 1.926 H, and it's divided into 6 different areas:

• Pas de la Casa — skiing resort right on the French border, north east of the capital.

• Soldeu—skiing resort
• Arcalis—ski area at the head of the valley from El Serrat
• Arinsal—skiing resort part of the Arinsal Pal ski area. Also known as Vallnord which means Valley North in English
• Pal—skiing resort part of the Arinsal Pal ski area.

Andorra for Skiing near Spain and France and where to see Christmas decorations until Jan 6th

WHERE CAN YOU GO SKIING? A side trip from Spain, where there is not enough snow, attracted my ski fanatic son and relatives to Andorra.

I was in Spain many times in the summer. My parents had a flat in Southern Spain and we drove all the way there through France one summer to deliver a kitchen sink bought from Wickes in London in the UK. I remember clearly how Christmas day was not a big thing, at least not for us, in Spain, as we had sardines on the beach. However, on the eve of January 6th the three kings arrived on horseback in Estepona and threw sweets to children in the crowd. 

So, in much of the UK, and more so in Europe, especially the Roman Catholic countries, expect decoration to stay up until 12th night. In Singapore and Malaysia the entrepreneurial Chinese tend to take down Christmas decorations on the 26th of December, and put up the decorations for Chinese new year, which will be February 1st  in 2022. So, meanwhile, online we can all continue enjoying photos of Christmas decorations from countries like Andorra.

My family reported: We wanted to ski in Granada which would have involved  1,000 km less driving, but there's barely any snow there right now.

The capital and largest city is Andorra la Vella. (Meaning old Andorra, la vella being the old or the old lady).

Languages spoken are French, Spanish and Catalan. Schools teach in one of these languages with about 30% of the population in each language group. Some people also speak Portuguese. The country is sandwiched between Spain in the South and France in the North.

Wikipedia is good. Wikimedia does not add much.

Wikivoyage has a little more. 

Our family set off with the intention of seeing the main mall with 1,500 shops, the multi-storey spa (the website shows two levels. 

Our family said: "Getting into Andorra from Spain is easy. they don't even stop you to check passports."

Skiing and Sports

Wiki says:

 'Andorra is famous for the practice of winter sports. Andorra has the largest territory of ski slopes in the Pyrenees (3100 hectares and about 350 km of slopes) and two ski resorts. Grandvalira is the largest and most popular resort. Other popular sports played in Andorra include football, rugby union, basketball, and roller hockey.'

Belize, Honduras, British Honduras - Which, Where, When? Central America

 Belize used to be called British Honduras. Where is it?

South of Mexico, says my Belizian friend Edward, President of Singapore International Dynamic toastmasters club, which is online every Friday, at 9.30 Singapore time..

Wiki says it succinctly. 

British Honduras was a British Crown colony on the east coast of Central America, south of Mexico, from 1783 to 1964, then a self-governing colony, renamed Belize in June 1973,^[2] until September 1981, when it gained full independence as Belize. British Honduras was the last continental possession of the United Kingdom in the Americas.

Since 1981 when Belie became independent and changed its name from British Honduras.

Why go there?

Belize is famous for its uniquely large coral barrier reef and scuba diving and snorkelling. Will the barrier reef be preserved and protected? Yes. Belize had a huge international debt. The solution was to appeal for international funds to protect the barrier reef and wipe out the dept, so the country could make money from tourism instead of selling off the coral and what was beneath it. A win-win situation.

At Christmas time you see Belizian bands wearing red Santa hats and playing on steel drums. 

Belize traditional Xmas cake. Popular with older and traditional people.

Belize modern Xmas cake, called yellow cake, popular with the younger generations. Often you are served both types of cake.

Rum Popo, the traditional rum drink, popular for Xmas. Brand Don Marco.

The Belizians, inheriting British traditions, keep up the Xmas decorations until 12th night, like in the UK.

A typical breakfast includes egg and fruit.

A typical main meal consists of chicken, rice and beans.

Alcoholic drinks include rum based cocktails

Honduras

Honduras means depths in the Spanish language. Christopher Columbus supposedly said he was glad to be out of the depths. (Deep water?)

Honduras is a country in Central America. It may also refer to:
