Pronunciation of foreign languages, accents and diacritics

French pupils are élèves

To remember the up and down accents on French words I look at the French word for pupil, secondary school pupil eleve.

Look at the up and down accents.

élève

The first upward accent makes the sound ay as in hay. The second downward accent makes the sound ev as in every. You automatically raise your voice slightly when saying ay. You automatically make a lower sound on the ev sound.

The cedilla or tail under the c turns the c into an s sound. Think of the words palace, pencil, police in English.

English and the Magic E - for kings George V and George VI

People learning English complain that they don't know when a c has a hard sound like K. The secret is that in English an e after g makes the g soft. Age. Page. Rage. Sage. Percentage.

In the name George, the g is twice followed by an e which changed the hard g into a soft J sound.

Garage

The first g is hard. The second g is oft because the e is added to tell you so. GE=J

Albanian words which are similar to English words

In Albania you immediately see the words Hotel and Bar. Reading through two language or multi language information in hotels you find many more words look the same, with the letter c changed to k.

Some handy words include farmacia for pharmacy or chemist. Dentist is dentist, as I learned from an advertisement at the airport, confirmed later by other sources.  I had wondered whether the ad was partly in English for the benefit of English speakers, but a check of Albanian words proved the word dentist spelled exactly the same is Albanian as well as English.

When driving and watching signs, we eventually worked out that the Albanian for (city) cente is qender.

Taksi is taxi.

limon is lemon.

Albanian words are easy and useful? Yes and no!

The words hotel and bar appear everywhere in Albania.

When standing in a line to get a table at a restaurant, or being approached by the staff, you might want to hold up your fingers and indicate your group, for example, for one, two, three, four or five people.

Yes and No in Albanian

In an Albanian hotel, at reception, I listened to a conversation an Albanian hotel manager was having on the phone. People in hospitality are positive. He kept sayign Po which means yes.

At first I had trouble remembering Po is yes and Jo is no. Then I recalled that Positive and Po start with the same letters, so Po is possible, probable or positive.

Numbers

Looking at numbers, if you are solo, or a couple, or parents with one child, or two couples, you could lean just the word for one, or two, or three, or four.

Learning Albanian For Your Holiday, Work, Fun, Curiosity: 10 handy words

I took a Lonely Planet guide with me to Albania. It has several languages and is small but quite thick and heavy. I considered cutting the spine in half.

I did not want to spoil the book. It seems sacrilege to spoil a book. I did not want it to disintegrate. I might need to use it again.

But it had not cost much. I had bought a cheaper second hand used copy.

I then realized I could cut out the Albanian pages, which were first in the book, which had arranged the languages alphabetically.

I cut out the pages and stapled them together. I had too many for one staple. So I used two for two sections. i could have made a cover for the new mini book, in thicker paper to protect it, but I just put it in a see through zip lock bag.

The print is small, hard to read at night in a hotel bedroom, but handy in a restaurant and outdoors in daytime. The guide is something to read when waiting for other people, or for a table in a restaurant, or for your meal to arrive.

Many Albanian words are similar to English. The next challenge is how to pronounce each word, and how to pronounce the letters which have accents. The ling app is good because you start with one word or small groups of two or three words and learn the roounciation by hearing it straight away.

You see lots of English words and brand names.

Albania's Hotel Airport Tirana: for the best bouillabaise, and berry ice cream

A group of us gathered here for dinner, with some catching planes in the early hours of the morning. Our friends were at three different airport hotels. We were staying at the Crown Hotel in central tirana, the capital city, for another couple of days.

My husband ordered the bouillabaisse. He was pleasantly surprised by the tastiness and quality. The famous French dish is a cross between a soup and a casserole. It might have any firm fish at its centre, with assorted shellfish surrounding it.

He says, 'It was good. The fish was solid. An authentic bouillabaisse would also have croutons floating, and a garlic mayonnaise on the croutons. This lacked the croutons and mayonnaise. Despite that, it was just perfect, one of the best dishes I had in Albania.

That was a surprise. I had not expected much of the airport hotel. And we had just had a fabulous lunch at the Crown Hotel, ending with free chocolates in assorted colours.

I ended my meal with ice cream. The restaurant had a cart containing assorted ice creams.

Ice creams. Photo by Angela Lansbury.

The other diners ordered one scoop. Those who ordered vanilla were not excited by it.

I ordered three. Mainly to try the flavours and find what worked well. The mixed berry was definitely the best, with the most flavour. I also had lemon and chocolate, which were okay, nothing special. I recommend the mixed berries.

Wedding Palaces in Albania

Albania. Wedding Venue. Photo by Angela Lansbury.

You pass a lot of buildings like this along the motorway out of Albania.
Why outside the city? Is it just because land is cheaper? Maybe, but also because they are able to get a large plot, big enough for a large building, landscaped gardens and a large car park. They are isolated to making noise, and noise late at night, is less of a problem than ti might be in the city.

Albanians like to come back to Albania, where previous generations of their family live, to hold large weddings. Two receptions may be held, one on the day of the wedding, one the night before. One is hosted by and for the bride's family. The other is by and for the groom's family. Each wedding can be for 100 to 500 people. Hence the large venue.

In addition to the wedding venues, we also saw lots of shops selling wedding dresses.

Religious buildings you will see, some mosques with minarets and orthodox churches with crosses.

Which bedrooms and bathrooms were best in Albania? Bathrobes beautifully Presented at the Crown Hotel Bedroom, Tirana, Albania

All the bedrooms and bathrooms in our three hotels in Albania had pros and cons.

Pros at Theth
The bathrooms at our hotel in Theth were clean and modern.  For me, only one small thing was wrong, nowhere, no ledge or tray or alcove, to put the shower gel in the shower room. Of course that means less for the cleaner to clean and less for you to make a mess of.
I loved the wooden shelving under the basin the wooden shelf below for the towels and toilet paper.

Cons At Theth
Other guests complained about the lack of  a toilet roll holder. One guests said, 'I just knocked the toilet roll off the shelf and it rolled across the dirty floor. That's not hygienic. Toilet rolls are liable to roll around. A toilet roll needs to be securely fixed.'
Fiona, a friendly family member on the hotel's front desk, assured me that after her family had had a disagreement about whether toilet roll holders were necessary, the devices were now on order.

We also had only two hangers each (four in a room for two people) for a five night stay. In a hotel which returns laundry on wire hangers, you get hangers that way, without needing to bring them from home. A friend of mine in another room was travelling light, not unpacking, washing clothes out overnight, using a linen blouse which dried overnight. She gave me two hangers.

Pros In Tirana
I was impressed by the coiled belts of the bathrobes in the bedrooms of the Crown Hotel in Tirana, the capital of Albania.

Pros in Dhermi Beach at La Brisa Hotel
My husband was more impressed by the practicality and convenience of the bathrobes at La Brisa Hotel in Dhermi Beach, where the belts were threaded through the two lookps.

Wine, weddings and legends at rustic Restorant Legjenda in Shkoder, Albania

A tunnel of greenery leads to the rustic Restorant (restaurant) Legjenda (of legends) in Shkoder. Photo from Angela Lansbury. Copyright.

Opposite the Castle of Rozafa, in downtown Shkoder, just before taking the motorway into or out of the city, you see the entrance to romantic and amusing Restorant (Restaurant) Legjenda (Legend).

A tunnel of greenery leads you to the gardens. They are filled with amusing statues surrounding the restaurant. You can inhale the aroma of the flowers and hear the birds singing.

The rustic restaurant has stained glass windows.

Paintings of the Legend

Inside the rustic restaurant is a mosaic bar.

Along the back walls are frescoes, intriguing panels and paintings of the legend of the castle. Three men. What are they doing?

Restorant Legjenda in Shkoder, Albania. Table laid for dinner with candle and fanned napkins. Photo by Angela Lansbury. Copyright.

Romantic though they look, the story is a bit grim. Three brothers were building the castle and had no success. Did it keep tumbling or crumbling? They consulted a wise man. (I would say an unwise man.) He told them that the first wife to bring them food next day should be walled up inside the castle and all would be well. They should not warn their wives.

Two of them, the oldest, did warn their wives. The third was honest (or stupid) and did not warn his wife.

She was apparently resigned to her fate, not the least distressed. Her only worry, or her chief worry, was for her young child. Her wish was that she should have one half of herself outside the castle wall in order to hold her child on her knee and breastfeed her child.  Another version said, an eye, a breast and a hand. Up in the castle, a stone relief shows her half encased with parts of her body showing though holes.

(I was hoping for a twist, some happy ending. Maybe some kind soul can update this story.)

The legend says that the child survived, grew strong, fulfilled his mother's hopes and grew to be a brave and successful soldier. (Not killing his two uncles, or better still the wise man?)

The moral of the story? People often ask why three Albanian brothers were so stupid? Once answer is that only the third one was Albanian, and he was the only honest man.

Albania has a notable Nobel Prize nominee writer still alive. But he wrote a grim story about Italians coming to find their dead comrades after WW2. So there's no point in me, or you, writing to him, asking for a rewrite of the legend with a happy ending. If you can come up with a modernized happy ending, let me know.

Apparently the Brothers Grimm and Goethe heard this story. The brothers Grimm grimly, but happily, repeated it in translation. Only Goethe complained about the nastiness of it.

I was troubled when I heard the story. I am still troubled by this legend's unhappy ending, days later.

I think I have the solution. I shall rewrite the story. Here goes:

The Legend of Razafa Castle

Three brothers were building a mutual home, a large castle with many rooms, walls, and turrets at the end. The three borthers were all married, but the youngest brother was the first to have a son.

The two oldest brothers were jealous, and they carefully numbered all the stones to be sure each brother build his section of the castle. But each day they found yesterday's stones had all gone.

They went to visit an old wise man who lived nearby was also building a house, for his himself and his little grand-daughter,  much more successfully than they were. His house was almost finished. They asked him the secret of success.

He said they should give him just ten stones, three bottles of wine, red, white and then next morning, wall up the wife who first visited them with food.

That evening, unbeknown to her husband, the devoted third wife decided she must help.

In the morning, before breakfast, at dawn, the third wife, escorted by her two chastity guards, went to consult the wise man. In his grand house, she noticed that the stones which had vanished from the castle every night, had built the grand walls of his palace.

She asked him to accompany her back to the castle, with her two chastity guards. One the way she fell, ripping open her gown.  (Or when she entered, the old man attacked her and she screamed.)

The chastity guards / body guards demanded that the old wise man should give her his black cloak to cover her modesty, and, in exchange, gave him the torn purple woman's gown.

When the group reached the castle, the two brothers jumped on their supposed sister in law, silenced the person in the  black cloak, and put the person behind the walls.

Meanwhile, the young wife, pretending to be the old man, hid in the grand palace of the wise old man. With her child, the little son, who played with the old man's grand-daughter..

That night the walls were safe. After a week, the brothers decided to visit the old wise man to thank him. They entered his home, searching, and were astonished to see the numbered stones. Then they found the young woman, and were overjoyed that she was still alive. They took her and her son and the little grand-daughter back to their castle.

They were angry with the old man but when they went to kill him, his grand-daughter, burst into ters. The youngest sister's son raised his arms to stop them.

So they, relunctantly, forgave the old man and returned him safely to his house, But they took back all the stones needed for their three brothers, three wives, and umpteen children in the castle.

On the gate of his house they engraved the words,

Do not believe any unscientific predictions, stories or legends you hear here.

What happened years later? They had returned to the castle, and released the old man. He had gone mad, from old age and the shock of the incarceration.

But his grand-daughter married the son of the youngest brother!

Now a road runs between the Rozafa castle and rustic Restoran Legjenda in Shkoder. The river still runs both sides of the restaurant. The greenery forms a barrier between the noise of the cars on the big, busy road and the quiet oasis of the restaurant. You can hear the birds singing.  But ...

Sometimes at night, it is said, you can hear the sounds of a wedding party. Listen, and you might hear an old man singing,  merry on three bottles of wine. Sometimes you can hear the sound three brothers and their three wives laughing. Sometimes you can hear the merry, laughing tourists in the restaurant.

Story by Angela Lansbury, Wed 28 Jun 2023. Copyright.

I feel much better now that I have rewritten the story with no deaths, a happy ending, the good and innocent rewarded, and some humour.

Here is the address of the restaurant. Rruga is Albanian for road. The code for Albania is 355.

Food and Drink

The restaurant is very popular for weddings. I tried a very good freshly squeezed juice.

Vines and Wines

They make their own wines from vines growing in neat rows in the garden. The roses on the ends of the rows are not there for decoration but an early warning sign of potential problems with the vines because roses are even more susceptible.

Medaur Winery in Koplik, near Shkroder, North Albania (downhill from Theth)

My hsuband Trevor oganized a group trip to Meduar Winery in Koplik, on the plain below the the Balkan mountains in the north of Albania.

The name of the place is Kantina Medaur. Kantina is Albanian for wintery.

We had emailed to make the arrangements some weeks in advance.

We started with the optional tour of the giant vats where all was explained.

The winery was well prepared for our visit. In front of the racks of wine bottles were plates of cheese and nibbles.

I asked for water and they raced to provide it. We were all standing. Eventually I asked for a chair and that was quickly produced.

The toilet for visitors turned out to be with in the next door builings. Quiate a long walk. But it turned out to be a blessing. We ended up in the factory or aromatic items next door. A siling member of staff bought me a handful of aromatic herbs to put in my pocket.

On the way home we passed lavender fields.

My regret was that we had not gone earlier and allowed time to visit the aromatics factory next door.

Jack Daniel's seated statue, Albania, and the USA Jack Daniel's Distillery Tours

Angela Lansbury seated beside seated statue of Jack Daniels, outside a bar, in Tirana, capital of Albania. Photo by Trevor Sharot.

Another Jack Daniel's bar is in Vlore, Albania.

I am not mad about whisky and spirits which I find too strong, so I did not go out of my way to visit the Jack Daniels' distillery in Tennessee when I lived in the USA. Advertiemsnet for Jack Diniels whisky were on the walls of the London underground tube station in 2023. But this opportunity to sit beside a statue was a must. I looked up the story of Jack Daniel's after seeing this statue in Albania.

One amusing story about Jack is that he could not remember the combination to his safe and once icked it. Legend said that this was the cause of his death. However, the story about him kicking the safe apparently predates his death, in his early sixities, a few years later. The business was inherited by his nephews as he had no children. But his memory is kept alive in the name of the business and the statues. One of them is outside the factory in Tennessee.

Jack Daniel's Honey is not honey but Honey Whiskey. Apparently it was discontinued but I found it available all over the internet including a supermarket in London, England Morrisons.

You can visit the Jack Daniel's Distillery in Lynchburg, Tennessee. Prices are about 3--60 dollars including various numbers of tastings and various length of time, half an hour, an hour, longer.
For about 120 US dollars include a two course lunch. They hint that on some of the tours you get a free gift.
You must book. They are closed on national holidays.
Read all about it on their website. As is usually the case with websites about alcohol, you have to give your birthdate to prove that you are the legal drinking age. I think it is 18 but it varies in different states of the USA.

Their statue of Jack Daniels is totally different to the cowboy, casual style in Albania. The American statue has Daniel smartly dressed with a bow tie and a suit with a long jacket and waistcoat.

Special, Smart Jacket in Silver For Celebratory Tea Time On a Rooftop Terrace in Tirana, Albania

I asked this local girl where she got her top. It carries the brand logo.

As a result My husband and I had a jolly conversation with her and her father.
We were on the rooftop terrace of the Crown Hotel in Tirana, capital of Albania.
The Crown is a luxury hotel. The youngsters in Tirana are smartly and fashionably dressed.

Travel clothes - pockets for pleasure and practicality

My pale blue denim jacket has four big outside pockets and an inside pocket. I wore it everywhere in Albania on holiday, hiking in the countryside, and visiting museums and restaurants in the cities.

The pockets have button fastening. Safer to prevent things falling out, as well as theft. I did occasionally drop things out when I did not bother to fasten the pockets and leaned over or took off the jacket indoors. For extra security, one day I shall add small zips.

Best apple strudel at B & K in Edgware and Hatch End, London, England, UK

Strudel, apple strudel was on my mind, and lokshen pudding (noodle pudding.  B & K  was our first shop stop on returning to the UK. They are not big on presentation but they are big on taste.

The best Jewish style food. They are not even Jewish but it doesn't matter. They have years of experience and their food is the best. i tried kosher food shops in New York and New ersey but they did not match up to B ^& K.

Yes, I know, everybody's mother is the world's best cook and everybody's local restaurant serves the world's best food. So I am probably prejudiced.

You don't believe me? Try it for yourself.

Recycling your holiday souvenirs: corks and leaflets

Recycled wine bottle cork decoration. Six corks on a saucer. Photo by Angela Lansbury. Copyright.

If you don't have a frame for the corks to hang them on a rustic style kitchen wall, you can place them on a saucer as dinner table decoration.

I come back from holiday with so much clutter. What can I do with corks from bottles? Brochures, leaflets, pamphlets?

I even have duplicates of business cards and leaflets. Here are my latest ideas.

Uses For Corks

Cork Decorations

Arrange cork decorations in concentric circles, lying flat and radiating out, like the almonds on the top of a British Dundee cake, around a central point such as a cut off disc shape half of a cork.

Cork Jewellery

Use a cork as a pendant, or a string of corks, or discs cut from corks, as a lightweight necklace which cost nothing so is no great loss if you lose it. Make a matching bracelet.

Hanging Corks

On bags and backpacks.

Use corks on Hats

Hang corks from hat brims as fly swatters. I bought a hat like this in Australia. It was expensive. But I found the corks in front of my eyes were irritating. You could just have corks all around the hat, but not in front of your eyes.

Uses For Travel Leaflets, tickets, pictures

You can stick one sided tickets, even your boarding passes, onto diagonally cut cereal boxes to be used as storage for your itinerary and other brochures or receipts from your holiday, Or just a decorative box.

You can use leaflets to cover your holiday notebook or diary.

Brighten up old cardboard boxes used for storage.

If you have three identical leaflets, or at least two, make a three D picture with trees at the back and a building at the front. No two identical? Use the brightly coloured leaflet in front and a paler one at the back.

Print pictures for a talk. Then use them to create a 3D picture. You need a frame with a gap, bought cheaply from craft stores when they have sales.

Souvenirs from Albania: at Tirana airport, online, shopping malls, the capital, the wineries, the Shkroder castle kiosk

Airport shop, departure, airside, after security, near the cafeteirias while waiting for flight gate to be announced, Tirana, Albania. Photo by Angela Lansbury. Copyright.

Souvenirs
1 Flag symbol, the black double headed eagle, on red background. See it, on tee shirt, caps and these milk jugs at the airport. The milk jugs cost 12 euros each. I just bought a set of four small white jugs which are easier to clean, from Amazon, for half that price, but if you have leks and or euros to get rid of, these cute red milk jugs for your morning cup of coffee would be great. If I were to go back, I would buy one, possibly cheaper in a big supermarket or from a shopping mall, of which there is one large one near the airport and another large one the other side of the capital city of Tirana. Also, after your home and suffer from why didn't I buy non-buyers regret, loads online from Alibaba and others, red tee shirts, dresses, and eagle gold colour necklaces.

2 Wine - from the airport, but also the wineries you visit, so you can try before you buy.

3 Olive oil

4 Honey - runny honey and thick honey to go on yogurt, delicious.

5 Fig jam (mine is from Isak winery)

6 Cross-body fabric bags (i bought from a kiosk at Shkoder castle  north of Tirana). Three zip pockets down the front. Main pocket big enough for a mobile phone.  Light weight bag with wide strap. My favourite.

7 Lace flower necklaces (from a shop in castle alley in Tirana, the capital). Lovely choice of colours. the asking price was 10 euros each. I liked two. I immediately negotiated and got offered two for 15 euros. I bought both, one blue, one red (and white).

8 Outlets for big brands and shopping malls

9 Wedding dresses - huge choice from huge shops along the motorway from Tirana driving north past the white Disney type castles which are wedding venues.

Albania, in the capital, Tirana, outdoor eating in the sheltered garden of Restaurant May 1

This restaurant is called the first of may.

In Tirana, when eating outdoors, you have to sit away from people who are smoking.

My first thought was that this restaurant was down a side alley, away from the main areas, a backwater. However, the place grew on me. No traffic. No passers by. A peaceful garden. Relaxing.

Palmanova Hotel-restaurant Stop, Albania

Driving along the motorway north from Tirana, one is looking for a place to stop for a toilet and/or coffee. Although many of the petrol stations have hotels behind them, this hotel looked more promising than the average garage, and indeed it was. Inside the hotel was a cafeteiria. At the back was this delightfully coloured toilet area.

The tiles are contrasting, red and white and red and cream.

Confusingly, when I do a search for Palmanova, I find Hotel Palmnova, as well as Palmnova beach resort nearer Tirana.

Isak Winery, Sarander, SW Albania, friendly, fun, see wine, fruit, vegetables, and a great shop

This family owned and family friendly winery has a shop with wines and spirits but also fig jam, magnets and other souvenirs to look at.

Fruit Vegetables
In addition to wines, we were shown the greenhouses, not of glass but some kind of opaque cloudy white material. Here in the warmth,  they grow tomatoes and vegetables for supermarkets and restaurants.

They are happy to tell you about their history. The business was originally small winery, bought from a Jewish man called Isak. Now the current owner's family have expanded the business.

The winery is further south, further away from Tirana, the capital. They are well prepared for large groups, with food and tables. But when we were there were not overwhelmed with coach parties like the other two wineries which we saw in Berat.

We loved out chats and seeing the fruit and vegetables as well as the wine.

Kantina means winery in Albanian.

Tirana's Meme Teresa (Mother Teresa) Airport - Mother Teresa Statue and Hotel Airport Garden, Albania

Hotel Airport Garden, at Tirana airport is pleasant for stopping for coffee, meeting up with a group, and seeing off departing friends, if you have good weather. Be aware that outside areas of restaurants and buildings are usually occupied by smokers.

Mother Teresa statue on the roundabout as you enter and leave the driveway to the arrival and departure buildings and their car parks. In 2023 we found building taking place all over Tirana.

Mother Teresa Day is the 5th of September.

The Coffee Cup, Hampstead High Street, London, England, UK

Walking uphill towards Hampstead station, from Patara restaurant, we stopped for coffee at The Coffee Cup. We sat outside, people watching.

I ordered cappuccino which had deep white froth filling the top half of the large cup. Our family\s two year old had a baby chino which consists of milk with froth. No caffeine for children. But it looks the same, so tiny tots feel they are not missing out.

The table is supplied with packets of brown sugar.

We also ordered Tiramisu. Sponge cake and cream, this time with strawberries.

Patara Thai Restaurant in Hampstead, London, England, UK

The battered fish had its head on and its tail up.

Shellfish sauce was on most dishes except for the fish and the chicken.

The chicken with chestnuts had good small chestnuts. Fewer cashew nuts than expected.

Our dessert was the summer special, mango sticky rice pudding, which proved popular.

I loved the durian dessert. A rare find. Better than anything I have had from food courts in Singapore.

Giant knives and forks and spoons.

Toilets are on the ground floor..

The name Patara means gracious lady.  It is part of the founder's name.

Patara Thai restaurant in Hampstead has sister restaurants under the same name in Thailand, Austria, Switzerland and Singapore. In England the branches are in Hampstead in NW London, Knightsbridge, Oxford Circus, Soho, South Kensington, and Wimbledon.
