If you are going from the UK to the USA, especially in the suburbs, flats and houses are much larger with walk-in closets.
But going from the USA to London, UK, you will find houses much smaller.
An American asked what the Brits do without closets. I've lived in both countries to I understand why Americans ask that.
In the UK in the 1800s freestanding furniture. You would have a dressing table, tallboy with drawers, his and hers wardrobes. Same in some historic boutique hotels in the USA.
Nowadays freestanding or more often built in wardrobes or cupboards, with or without backs. They are built along part of all of the bedroom wall facing the window above the bed headboard space, and beside it. And/or down one or both sides of the room.at one or both sides. Houses are smaller than the US. See advertisements in our Sunday paper colour supplements or google wardrobes from John Lewis or IKEA.
I'll add a picture later.
