Easy and useful Spanish words

Flag of Spain

Spanish is one of the easiest languages to learn if you speak English. (Or if you speak Italian or Portuguese.)

Many countries speak Spanish, so you can start using it there, picking up the accent. Or use it there to improve your Spanish and make use of what you already know and practice it.

Spanish is spoken in Spain in Europe, as well as in Gibraltar and Andorra. Offshore are the inhabited islands of Mallorca,, Minorca, and the Canaries - Grand Canaria and Tenerife.

Spanish is spoken in most countries in South America, such as Venezuela, with the exception of Brazil where Portuguese is spoken.

In the USA Spanish appears on signs and is widely spoken as a first or second language. It is also spoken in Mexico, Cuba, and several Caribbean countries such as Puerto Rico, and central American countries such as Belize.

Travelling with pills and keeping records

Pill Boxes

White and Colours

The compartments might be transparent or white. I prefer those which are seven different colours. A different colour for each day of the week.

Compartment Numbers & Sizes

You can buy a pill box to hold a pill a day for a week, with seven compartments. They may be labelled Monday to Sunday. You can see that the box for the day is empty and you have taken the pill

More elaborate pill boxes have 28 compartments. They are designed for you to take four pills a day for a week. They might be labelled morning afternoon evening night. Or breakfast, lunch dinner spare.

Labels

Morn, noon, Eve, bed.

Usually there is enough space for you to insert two or more pills in a compartment, depending on the size of your pills.

Keeping Written Records - DIY

Pill box. Photo by Angela Lansbury.

Another system is to keep a written note, or write a checklist with columns.

I tried writing down the times at four hour intervals, in pencil. When I took the pill, I wrote the time in pen, and ticked it.

Written Records - Printed Grds

You can buy a grid of tick boxes. The cost is under five pounds, with free postage, delivery in a couple of days. You might look for next day delivery.

Temperature Control of Pills

What about keep in the pills cool?

I keep my pills in the fridge or a cool box. Only one pill is left out, on the table or by my bed on the bedside table. (Americans call this small table, with a drawer and shelf below, a night stand.

Search Words

Look for pill dispensers, pill oraganisers.

Duck Calling Contest at Thanksgiving and Duck in China, Singapore and the USA

For the exxperience of watching and hearing duck calling, fly along to Stuttgart, Arkansaw (named after his birth country, by an immigrant German Pastor). Not just one duck. Flocks of ducks. Amusing. Ducks are bigger than toads. Duck race - something which make a nice change from bad new. A conversation starter. And stopper.

What does a duck look like?

Peabody Duck in hotel. Photo from Wikipedia.

Another duck attraction. The Peabody ducks in the Peabody hotel in Memphis, Tennessee, fed daily for the entertainment of hotel guests, and visitors.

Webbed feet for paddling or pushing through water. You may know mallard ducks, wwith the distinctive green plumage. It' is fun to watch ducks swimming and eating.

You might like eating duck meat.

Peking Duck In the UK

For decades Peking Duck was a favourite dish at Chinese restaurants in the UK. (Most were run by Chinese immigrants from Hong Kong).

Chinese Duck in Beijing

We had Peking Duck in Beijing. We were served just the skin. That is traditional, considered the delicacy. We though we were being cheated out of the meat.

Duck Rice in Singapore

A favourite dish in Singapore is chicken rice, and duck rice.

Arkasas also has rice. Stuttgart is the duck and rice capital with companied like Riceland, not to be confused with Iceland.

Duck calling

 - read the instructions. Ducks respond to four types of calls.

You can call with your own voice, which is rare. Usually you have a duck calling barrel, with inserted reeds.

What a handy trick to have. Very useful in parks. How to attract ducks for a photo or video or grandchild. Or send them away from your sandwiches. Or save scared grannies and girlfriends.

Basketball Tree - Amusing Invention in Bentonville, Arkansas, USA. See a brewery, bike trails, Bill & Hillary Clinton airport other attractions and events in Arkansas.

The Basketball Tree

The story goes that a little boy was wistfully dreaming of having a basketball net he could always use. A kind and enterprising man sketched out a design of a basketball tree, and built it. The original was placed in a public park, later moved to outside a  museum. The idea has since been copied.

Now you can see it in Bentonville, Arkansaww USA. It is being moved from a park to the local museum.

The museum traces the history of Walmart, the USA store.

Wikivoyage found me no less than 8 museums in Bentonville.

Fortunately, one of the comments said the basketball tree was in a hotel museum. I tracked that down.  21cmuseumhotels.

21c Museum Hotels

21c stand for 21st century. The founding couple saw that their city had landscape being preserved and funded whilst hsitoric buidlings were languishing. They were into art and decided to renovate historic buildings as hotels and install modern art in hotels. New into old. Old into new. There are now half a dozen of these hotels, which have won several awards from Conde Nast. You can link up to them and learn about them in Wikipedia, Facebook and other places.

Now, where exactly are they?Chicago. Bentonville.

Bentonville

Bentonville - how to remember the name? My husband quips, 'I was in Bentonville.' (A pun on the name of the UK prison, Pentonville.)

The name Benton is the surname of a man who campaigned for the statehood of Arkansas..

Arkansas

The name of the state is pronounced ark - an- saw. Something to do with the French version of a native American name for a bow or arc shape on a river. If you ask for er-Kansas you will end up in Kansas.

The flag features a diamond because it is the only US state producing diamonds. The state is nicknamed the natural state. You can enjoy lots of trails, walking and hiking trhough the countryside. A seventeen mile loop along the river offers opportunitie to walkers, runners, bikers and hikers.

Where is Arkansas in the USA. It is south central, landlocked. Neighbouring states include Texas, if you want to make a two-state trip or a side trip.

When should you or could you go there? Unusual events include the annual toad race. And duck calling.

The Toad Race

What's the difference between a toad and a frog? You are more likely to find frogs in fish ponds.Toads spend more time on dry land and have dry skin.

Duck Calling At Thanksgiving

So, to sum up, something for fans of history, the history of American shopping stores, sports - basketball, wildlife - frogs and ducks - unusual and jolly events. Finally, to get away from it all, trails.

Where next?

Little Rock - Big Capital - People

The capital of Arkansas is Little Rock. Named after the landmark little rock on the Arkansas river. Nowadays travellers arrive at the Bill and Hillary Clinton airport. Former President Bill Clinton was born here. Note that Hillary is spelled with a double L, like her husband Bill and hill and will.  .

Things to do, 'big in little rock', they say, are monuments and museums connected with black history, military hsitory and Vietnam Veterans.

See the monument of statues to nine black American students who enrolled in a white college and started the process of desegregation..

To sum up, Bentonville is the place to be. Bentonville's attractions include numerous word starting with B, the Basketball tree, the Birthplace of Walmart, a brewery, and biking region. You arrive at the Bill and Hillary Clinton airport.

Portable potty for camping, cars, hotels, homes - or invalids

Hotels & Confence Centres

I am planning a holiday at a conference centre and they might not be able to provide a room with step free access. What if the room is ground floor, but has a high step into the min shower and basin and toilet area?

Invalids At Home

What about at home? I am having difficulty walking. It's painful.

Hotels - Historic

When I was a child, every bedroom at home or in a hotel, had a potty under the bed or in the bedside table, (Americans call it a night stand). As far as I remember, they did not have the sophistication of a lid, wwhich would have got in the way of the user in the dark. You left a tip for the chamber maid who emptied the potty in the morning.

Commodes

I looked up commodes. Up popped something interesting. A portable potty for camping.

It looks like those concertina plastic cups which collapse and expand. I must admit, my experience is that they collapse when you are using them, spillig water. One would not want that to happen with a portable potty. For several reasons. The danger of injuring yourself. Makig a mess. Damaging the potty. Stress

Portable Potty For Camping

The portable potty comes, modern style, with a roll of about ten bag liners. easier than washing out the whole item. I don't know how heavy it is to carry.

Could it be used in hotels? Or for invalids?

Homes Without Toilets

Would it save women in countries like India from risking going out at night when they could be attacked, robbed, raped?

Portable Potty Reviews

I read the reviews which said that it was sturdy.

Portable Potty Prices

It is a lot cheaper than the commodes for long term invalids, designed like dining chairs, bucket chairs.

A cheaper folding chair potty is only six pounds seventy four pence. From Temu. Free delivery. Allow 4 days.

Cars and Traffic James

The other time you might need one is when stuck in a traffic jam.

Campervans

Or in a Campervan. Which does not hook up to an emptying device.

Blocked Toilets

Another use would be for when the toilet is blocked.

Renovating Apartments

Or staying in a new or renovating apartment during building or rebuilding before the services are connected up.

Cheapest Potties

The collapsible, carry in a case potty from Temu is fifteen pounds twenty pence. I also saw it at 16.21.

The cheapest lidded potty is under five pounds (ten dollars).

Keeping Track of Pills When Travelling

Pill Preparation - Ordering

Order enough pills to last throughout your trip.

Include any regular pills. Plus aspirin or paracetamol.

Pill Labels

Make sure the pills are labelled so you know which pills they are, and to show to Customs officers. Be aware that some medication may be banned or require authorization.

What do I and you need to note

when packing pills? I remember these rules.

Pill Packing

1 Whatever will go wrong will do so. Hope for the best but prepare for the worst.

2 A place for everything and everything in its place.

3 Make a checklist and check the checklist.

4 Be Prepared.

5 A stitch in time saves nine.

Better to pack pills, enough pills, rather than hope to buy at your destination. In Thailand five members of my family wasted an hour, walking to three different drug stores at our destination to buy me more Thyroxine pills.

COUNTING DAILY PILLS

1 The number of days and pills.

2 Spare pills.

3 Prescription.

3 The temperature of pill storage. Cool box.

4 Record of which pill was taken each day.

5 Liquids for taking pills. Water bottle. Cup.

Pill crusher - for a long trip to a second home.

Pack pills to go into hospital. You might be kept all night in A & E (accident and emergency).

For the return journey, I always take an extra pill. Firstly, on long flights back from Singapore to the UK,  You arrive the morning after the last day of your holiday.

Travelling in the other direction, UK to Singapore, and on to Australia or New Zealand you tend to forget that you are arriving a day later. You need your next day's pill in your pocket to take before breakfast. (My thyroxine instructions say take half an hour before eating.)

6 24 HOUR Pill Records.

Address of chemist and their opening hours. Weekend, evening and national holiday hours.

My regular chemist in London, and nationwide Boots, sells pill dispensers with compartments for each day of the week.

This month, in July 2025, I found a wonderful new system. For calcium and vitamin D tablets, which I should have used every day after I stopped taking pills osteoporosis for post menopause.

I have had verious strategies.

1 Counting Travel Days And Pills

One is to count out the number of pills you need for your trip.

Pill Storage - Choices

Keep the morning pill for the day of travel in your handbag, or jacket pocket. That is so that you don't rush off to the airport leaving the day's pill behind in the fridge.

Note down where the pills are. You don't want to be searching through four pockets, two inside your jacket, two outside, plus your wasitcoat poickets, your two dress pockets,  your handbag's three pockets, Your wheelie bag's outer and inside pockets, and your tote bag's inside and outside pockets. Then remembering that your husband has all the family's pills together.

Pills in fridges

Have you left pills behind in the fridge at home? In the hotel bedroom fridge? In the hotel reception or kitchen's fridge?

Pills in Pockets Of Vehicles

The back of the airline seat? The glove box of your own car left at the airport? The hire car glove box?

The bag with the take away food, which the family are about to throw in a nearby bin?

Remembering to take pills - Reminders

You can add take pill to your to do list in the front cover of your travel diary, or each day in your diary. Or send yourself a reminder in wahtsapp every night for your monring pill. Or set an alarm on your phone, and label the alarm, Take Pill.

Travelling - not trapped at home. How to Get Up and Down a Curb with a Walker Safely

I have  walker and a wheelchair.
When I tried to leave the house, just stepping down at the front door was a terrible jolt.
My family don't like the idea of a sloping triangular wedge. They think that tilts you forward and makes you fall.
I had thought of using a solid box to make a deep step less deep.
I think one of the tricks is to step down with the strong leg first.
This methoid in the video is partly about slowing down.

Anti Mosquito And Anti Insect Sprays and Strategies

My packing list for holidays, trips, days out, includes insect repellent.

Repellent - Lavender

Lavender is also said to repel mosquitos. I used to yo-yo between Singapore and London, before and after Covid. In London I would stock up on lavender cosmetics to take back to Singapore. Marks & Spencer stocked pefumed products in the UK and later in Singapore. But UK products were cheaper in the UK than in Singapore. A British lavender brand is Norfolk Lavender.

I travel with lavender and lemon scented cosmetics and perfumes. As well as mosquito and insect repellent, anti-insect spray for hotel bedrooms, and sting relief.

Singapore Anti Mosquito Action

Singapore is fighting insects constantly. I remember the first time I saw white mist rising up outside my apartment block, condo. I thought it was a fire. I phoned down to reception to ask if they knew. They told me, "It is fogging, anti moquito. Shut your windows."

This happened every Friday. You would see the workers, with masks over their faces, waving machines left and right over the vegetation around the skyscraper's grounds. You could hear the noise.

Now they are breeding mosquitos which are part of the fight against malaria and dengue fever.

Insect Inspections

In Singapore there are strict rules. If there is an outbreak of dengue fever, and people in your area are being hospitalised, inspector will coe around, looking for sources of standing water. That could be gutters, saucers under plant pots, even plastic bags lying around on balconies. Pails on balconies or in gardens could be filling up with rain water. Water from the rain in old unused boots. Toilets with lids left up.

Flower vases are banned in cemeteries.

Anti Mosquito Apparel

In Australia I bought traditional cowboy hats with corks suspended. The corks kept hitting my face and were a nuisance.  You have to get hats the right size.

Mosiguard

For hiking trips, to Bulgaria, Cyprus, Italy, Madeira, Romania, Spain, I bought mosquito repellent clothing. It's quite expensive. I bought second hand on ebay.

Smells of Cities and Countries - Bali, England, India, Singapore - and anti-Mosquito Perfumes

Singapore and the Smell of Jasmine

When I am in department stores worldwide, and passing perfume counters at airports, I see Jasmine perfume and cosmetics featuring the aroma of the flowers.  I recall the colours and vivid smells of Singapore, especially the Jasmine.

The national flower of Singapore is an orchid. The Botanical gardens has an orchid garden. You can also visit orchid farms. Restaurants often have an orchid flower in a small vase on the table.

Singapore And Durian

Another distinctive seasonal smell of Singapore is durian. You will see signsbanning durian on the MRT (underground and overground railway). Taxis also ban durian. You can get it delivered. If you wrap it sufficintly well that nobody can smell it, then you could travel with it. That's the whole idea. You should not be carrying durian which others can smell, or which leaves a smell which lingers after you have left.

Bali and Tuberose

Is all the Far East the same? No. For me, Bali's distinctive smell is Tuberose. I encountered this in the lobby of a hotel. A huge central flower display in the hall.

I afterwards ordered tuberose which I planted in my front garden in London. It did not thrive. So for me, the smell of tuberose is still the smell of Bali.

England, London and Lavender

The smells of London are roses. But also lavender. You can visit lavender farms. Lavender soaps and perfumes and hand creams are in supermarket, department stores and chemist shops (which Americans would call drug stores).

Perfumes from flowers attract people, but also insects. When I realised that my perfumes from the UK were making me a magnet for mosquitos, I started stocking up on different perfumes.

Lavender is also said to repel mosquitos. I used to yo-yo between Signapore and London, before and after Covid. In London I would stock up on lavender cosmetics to take back to Singapore. Marks & Spencer stocked pefumed products in the UK and later in Singapore. But UK products were cheaper in the UK than in Singapore. A British lavender brand is Norfolk Lavender.

France and French Lavender

France also has French lavender. I recall visiting a perfume factory in Grasse, in Southern France. I went there on holiday when I was single. After I married, I went there again with my husband.

Indian Spices in India, England and Worldwide

India has different spices in different areas. Meats are in muslim areas and markets and restaurants. Vegetarian dishes are in Hindu areas. In England you will find tandoori foods in almost every high street (Americans would say main street). Tandoori is from northern India and Pakistan. Many vegetarian restaurants are well known in India, Singapore and in London, such as in Rayners Lane near the Rayners Lane tube station.

Italy, Lemons and Citronella

In Italy I discovered that lemon aromas repel insects. The lemon scent is in citronella.

Singapore's Little India

Singapore is tropical, high temperatures. Eternal summer, bright flowers, strong smells of flowers. My previous post was about jasmine in Singapore, which I smelled daily in my walk to Cashew station..

I previously lived in Singapore's Little India. Strong smells of spices waft from the flower sellers selling garlands in the markets of Little India. You also get aromas from treading on petals fallen onto the five foot ways, covered paths along the shops. Also strong smells of curry and spices from the restants and stalls in Little India.

I travel with lavender and lemon scented cosmetics and perfumes. (As well as mosquito and insect repellent, anti-insect spray for hotel bedrooms, and sting relief.

Traveller's Smells from Singapore. Jasmine Perfume comical, sentimental poem evoking the landscape and aromas of Singapore by Angela Lansbury

Jasmine rose from Wikipedia.

Jasmine Flowers

The bright colours of the flowers

Evoke sweet smells of Singapore

I could dream of them for hours,

Deeply inhale them all once more

Jasmine Path

Each day I walked down the hill

Crushed perfumed flowers beneath my feet

One day a lady's cutting them

The owner I wanted to meet

I said, 'I see you're busy, a big job

I don't want to delay you, or but in,

But since you've cut some pieces off

Could I, please, take a small cutting?'

The Jasmine Family

She said, 'My name is Madm Li

But you can call me Mrs Li

Madam means it's my aaiden name

My father's extended family

'A Li is a  plum tree, or white jasmine tree

My late brother planted all these flowers

I've a cutting for you, come inside

He was single, gardened  for hours'

Jasmine Memories

Mrs Li was kind, half-blind and old

One day her brother's house was sold

I still dream of that jasmine tree

Sweet smells waft through my memory.

-ends-

The Chinese and International Areas

This is a true story evoking the aromas of the flowers on my walk to Cashew MRT (mass rapid transport) railway station. I lived in Cashew Heights, an apartment complex which had cashew trees in the grounds.

Spanish Words You Will Recognize

Of course you should be learning grammar and whole sentences, not just vocabulary. But anything is better than nothing, and a few rods might get you in the mood for doing more. So, let's go.

Duolingo teaches you Brazilian Spanish.

Translate google gives you the option of Spanish used in Spain and Europe, and Brazilian South American Spanish.

Easy Spanish Words - Months

The names of the months in Spanish are similar to the English words. Translating from Spanish to English is easy. English into Spanish is more difficult, because mostly just one letter is changed.

The Spanish and Italian languages don't use capitals for the months, which makes typing quicker.

Spanish - English

abril - April

amigo - friend

bancos - banks

cartas - letters

el - the

el (with an accent on the e) - he

frio - cold

io - I (drop the letter o and you get the English word I)

julio - July

libros - books

Los Angeles - the angels (los is the plural)

mayo - May

mi madre - my mother

mis amigos - my friends (the word my in Spanish is plural here, agreeing with the noun)

Muchas - many

musico - music

necesito - I need

Nueva York - New York

quiero - I want

Quiero aprender español - I want to learn Spanish

si -yes

sopas - soups (add s for the plural in both English and Spanish)

supermercado - supermarket

y - and

English - Spanish

and - y

april - abril (turn the p upside down mentally to think of the Spanish)

banks - bancos

books - libros

cold - frio

friend - amigo

I - io

July - julio (for the Spanish, drop the y and change it to i, as well as adding o)

TRAVELLING With wheelchairs, walking aids, walking frames - Plans

MEDICAL PROBLEM TO SOLVE

I was taken to hospital by ambulance after reporting pain in my hip, and inability to walk. Stepping on my left leg hurt. I reported the problem to telephone number 101 in the UK.

The nurse who answered interviewed me. She transferred me to a doctor service which rang back an hour or so later. I went through a second battery of questions, to updaate, about the site of the pain, how long I had had pain, other symptoms.

I was told to pack up with my medications. Open the front door. And wait for an ambulance.

I could not stand. Walking back was too painful. So I called to my husband to bring a chair and I sat waiting by the door.

The ambulance service staff did a third update on my condition, checking my blood pressure and doing a blood test. Then we drove off. I was taken by ambulance to A and E at Northwick Park Hospital.

UK ambulances at hospital.

I was registered, seen by a doctor, given painkillers, put in a queue for an x-ray.

After a long wait I was taken for an x ray. I was diagnosed with a fracture.

Walking Frame Ownership

I was given a walking frome in the hospital in A & E. But that frame belonged to A & E for use there.

The physio department was called to give me another walking frome with their department label to take home.

I could not take a bus home. But I did not need an ambulance to rush me about, or delivery diagnosis and medication. My husband could drive to the hospital to collect me. Unfortunately his phone was silent and not answering. I phoned a neighbour to alert my husband.

The neighbour was not pleased. He said he had just been released from hospital where he was diagnosed with prostate cancer and he wanted to sit down and have lunch. Could it wait?

I replied, no. I'm occupying a chair in A & E, and other sick people are standing or on stretchers in the corridor waiting for a free seat. The hospital wants me to leave as soon as possible.

Collection

My husband drove to the hospital and collected me from the public's pick up point, 5 minutes only waiting time allowed, outside A & E. I progressed to the car slowly, with the aid of the two-wheel walking freme.

Wide Walking Frame

When I got home the walking frome was too wide to get between the bed and wardrobes in the bedroom. The wide walking frame was also hard to manoevre around corners, causing me to twist my hips. Thirdly, it was had to manoevre, in between the table and wall in the kitchen.

Narrower Walking Frame

A second walking frame, narrower, was brought to me on the Physio visit and checkup next day. Its height can be adjusted.

Toilet Bars

Will I need a disabled toilet on holiday? These are widely available. In coffee bars. Restaurants. And some ground floor hotel bedrooms.

Shower Grab Rail

They also ordered me a grab rail for the bathroom. I chose to have it horizotal rahter than vertical. That enabled me to get in to the left around the washbasin, yet get nearer the right by the shower tap controls.

Why Do I Need A Wheelchair?

Sitting Pain

I need a cushion or pillow to sit on. I need a padded footrest.
My office chair is on 5 wheels. However, I used a foot to push it forward, like a child riding a scooter. When I push with either food I get a shooting pain in my left thigh. I need a hand operated wheelchair. Or to remember to grab the edge of the desk to pull my chair forwards.

Walking Pain

I am walking very slowly. I take a step and need a rest.

Now I am in pain with every step and want a wheelchair.  If the hospital cannot supply one, I need to buy one.

Even if they can supply one, I need to know what the spec should be.

Online Wheelchair Options

I went online. The ones advertised under one hundred pounds were not wheelchairs but wheelchair covers.

For about twenty pounds over one hundred pounds, I could buy a wheelchair. I than found others advertised at about 80 or 90 pounds sterling.

When looking at the spec, the cheapest one said that it needed a carer to push it. Think of it as a two handle wheelbarrow with a footrest.

I need a wheelchair for on holiday. If I wake up and want to leave the bedroom for breakfast, I want a self-propellied wheelchair so I can wheel myself.

I found them at the same prices. You just need to check the words such as self-propelled. Also note whether they have footrests.

Footwear

I needed to wear synthetic clogs. I have crocs and some cheaper imitations. I need them to be sure of not running thw eheels of a wheelchair or walking frome over my feet, not kicking chair legs, obstructions on the floor, table or desk legs, steps, the bath or basin.

Foot stools

Does the wheelchair have a spec/poacket for carryig a bag? You might want a clipboard at a conference, A notbook, notepad. A small notebook to go in your pocket. A jacket or waistcoat with a deep pocket fr pills. A water bottle with a drinking cup.

The FEDUKLTD supplier on amazon pointed out that you can buy without VAT if you are chronically sick or disabled.

You can buy models which are all black or with red steel.

Ebay has several second hand, or refurbished. Around fifty to sixty pounds, some collect.

Travel Fans - Your Options

Fan being held close to one's face. Photo by Angela Lansbury.

Desk Fan With Stand

You can stand this fan 3-legged on your desk or dining table, or hold it. The stand is essential while you are using your hands for cutlery, or when using a phone at work.

On the back it says MiNi Fan. Japanese variation on the word mini.  But it is not what I call mini, it is the size of a hairdryer.
This fan was bought from Amazon. In business-like black.

Fan Colour - Random

You can buy different colours. Three colours are shown. Pink blue and green I thought that meant a set of three, for a family of three or small office. However, firstly you only get one. Secondly, note that you might be sent randomised colours.

If you want to stand it on a desk, look for one with a stand.
The larger fan's effect will reach other people around the dining table. Smaller fans might only be strong enough to cool one person.

Fan Settings

It may have two or three settings. If the fan is not blowing enough, check the setting. Your fan's setting, could have -been accidentally knocked, or re-set by somebody else, or by yourself earlier when you were on the phone and wanted to quieten it.

Smaller Mini fans more like the size of a phone are USB rechargeable and come with a tiny flat support like a phone clip.

Fan Noise

Also note noise. Look at the reviews. Check the specifictions. If you are in Zoom meetings, or recording meeting, you don't want the sound annoying others, or being heard drowing out voices on your recording.

Fan Size & Suitability

If you are travelling by car, you might want to take the larger fan. If you have a luggage allowance, you might want a smaller fan to go in your handbag.

Buying Laptops & Phones Overseas - To Gain Or Avoid Different Keyboards, Accents, Dollar & Money Signs

If you want a Webster's Dictionary or a keyboard with dollar signs, the USA is a good place to buy them.

Dollar sign on Keyboards.

If you want A Japanese, Russian, Greek or Hebrew keyboard, those countries would have the biggest choice of keyboards already in their language.

You can swich your keybaord in settings, but how do you remember which key to press? You need to buy an overlay of the right keyboard. Or print one out, as a temporary measure.

On my Samsung phone, I simply click on the key showing the globe, and up pops the Hebrew language I set when I was trying to learn Hebrew on Duolingo.

The Globe Symbol

Once, long after I had given up trying to learn Hebrew, I must have accidentally tapped on the globe key. Everything went into Hebrew and I had no idea why. I was in shock, in panic, in despair. Fortunately, my husband knew what the problem was. He just tapped on the globe symbol and magically my keyboard was back to normal.

Dollar and Pound Signs On Keyboards

$$$$$$$

When buying a laptop overseas, or at home, note whether the keyboard has dollar signs or pound signs on the keyboard. America uses dollars. On my Dell keyboard, the dollar sign is above the number 4.

So does Singapore. In Singapore you add the capital leter S before the dollar sign, S$.

To Change Keyboard Signs

If you are technically minded, you can go into settings and re-configure any key on your keyboard. We did this once when the key for full stop was stuck. We switched it with the colon which was rarely used. For several days I instinctively used the full stop key with no result. So we found that you need to print and stick on the new sign on the key.

Then one day we cleaned the keyboard with a blower. The Key must have been jammed by a microscopic piece of grit, or toast. We removed the sticker, then reconfigured the keyboard settings back to the way they were originally.

To Show Pound Signs On Laptop Keyboards

I have a Dell laptop which has dollar signs. To show pounds I can list them as GBP, as is done by some websites. I sometimes do that here in blogspot. You read my posts in blogspot where they are read-only and cannot be altered. I create posts in blogger with a passcode.

EDITING ON A PHONE

However, I can also use my Samsung phone which was bought in the UK. This has pound signs. So I can create posts on my phone with the pound signs. Alternatively, create posts on my laptop, then edit on my phone to insert the pound signs.

Keyboard Characters' Numbers

If you have a separate numeric keyboard, you can type in the codes for certain characters which you use frequently. My husband has a list of those he uses a lot. But he knows off by heart the numbers he uses frequently. For example 0163 is the pound sign. For French and some other languages, the acute accent used frquently on the letter e is 0233.

The answers to most keyboard changes are found in your laptop manual online, or Youtube, or Quora, or Wikihow. AI nowadays often quotes wiki.

Another way to find out is to pop into a laptop or phone shop. Even if they don't sell your brand of laptop or phone, if they are not busy, some helpful extravert sales person will probably be happy to show you.

If you are stuck, and in a shopping mall, make for a McDonalds or Costa where a group of schoolchildren are doing homework on their laptops. You might not want to release your phone to somebody walking in the street, but a group stuck like sardines might be a safer bet.

Station Cycle Racks, Harrow & Wealdstone, National Rail, Singapore and Worldwide

Bicycle racks outside Harrow & Wealdstone station. Photo by Angela Lansbury. Copyright.

WHERE ARE BICYCLE RACKS FOUND?

Double decker bicycle racks outside Harrow & Wealdstone station.

Similar racks are outside many stations in Singapore.  For example, Cashew station.

Buying 2 Tier Bicycle Racks

These racks cost 140 pounds without VAT, 168 with VAT. They are gas assisted to raise the bike to the upper level.

Bike racks are also called bike stands and bicycle parking racks. They have three uses.

Keeping Bikes Safe From Theft

They are placed in visible areas. You can lock the bike when leaving it so that it is safe.

Keeping Bikes Safe From Weather

If the stand is covered, you can leave a bike all day or for long periods and it is protected from rain which would corrode it.

Tidiness

The bikes are stored neatly, not just thrown down on the ground, tripping people up, untidy and higgledy piggledy.

You lock the bike first with the locking device which secures the wheels. Then use the hydraulic device to lift it to the upper level if the lower level is full, or you think it is safer on the top level.

Bikes which are hired for two hours commercially are usually in ground level racks. The two tier racks are often used for private bikes which poeple use to ride to a station to go to work, shopping, social events, or on holiday.

The wiki article shows different shapes used around the world.

You can take folding bikes for free on most UK national trains. However some routes require the bike to be in a holder. Check the rules for your route.

Tequila and Tonic Talk For Travellers

Tequila is made from the blue agave plant which grows around the Mexican city of Tequila. Like Champagne and many other names of drink and food there are restrictions on who or where or what ingredients can be used to produce and put on the label of products using what is sold under that name, although different copanies can also trademark brand anames for their company's production, or quality using different amounts of the local plant or product.

The Blue Agave Plant

Tequila has to be made from the blue agave plant.

Blue Agave plant.

It reminds me of the aloe vera I used to grow on the balcony of the last place I lived in Singapore. Long leaves with a sharp point. Fleshy inside. The agave fans out like a fan shaped palm. It grows in Mexico and the Caribbean.

It would be the drink to try in Mexico. But you don't have to travel all that way to try it.

BCB London

I tried it at the BCB bar and beverage trade show in July at Tobacco Docks in Eaast London.  The next event in the UK is next July. Others are held in Berlin and Sao Paulo, Brazil.

You can buy it online at amazon.co.uk and numeraout other online suppliers and physical supermarkets in the UK and worldwide.

I reseaarched online to see how you drink it. Like many other spirits, it is strong, high alcohol content.  So you don't drink it neat but add something else. A popular spirit drink is  gin and tonic. You can do the same mix with tequila, the nicely alliterative and memorable tequla and tonic.

I than researched tonic, good or bad. Tonic was originally drunk for a good, medicinal reason, against malaria, (prevention or cure?) . However, like any drug, you must know the dosage and not overdo it. For me tequila would be drunk only as part of a cocktail and only once a week, on one day, or evening, such as Saturday, or sometimes Sunday.

Obviously, if you are running a bar, restaurant, or events, you are serving it to others on a daily basis. The recipe which popped up online when I serached was easy to remember, 2 oz of tequila, 6 of tonic. Garnich with a slice of orange. For fun, on festive occasions, I like a cocktail to have a teeny paper parasol.

For Non Drinkers

To me one of the advantages of the orange slice or umbrella is that a non-drinkers drink resemblers the alcoholic drink. Crating a shared experience.

I have a grand-daughter aged four who wants to drink what we are drinking. So we give her a glass of water or juice with a little decorative paper umbrella and she is very happy. Giggles all around.

You don't have to travel to Mexico to drink Tequila. You can buy it in the UK from Amazon.co.uk or from off licenses.

What is an off license?

I remember as a teenager being puzzled when my father spoke about buying drinks from an off license.

An off license has a license to sell sealed bottles and cans of drinks off the premises, essentially a shop, not a place where staff have to be trained how to serve alcohol. You might describe it as a bottle shop.

Spelling  license and licence

In British English the verb is spelled with an s, the same as the Americans, but the noun in spelled licence, using the C twice. Linguistis would notice that tonic ends with an ick sounnd, rhyming with brick. Adding the letter e after c makes the soft s sound.

Tonic

The tonic added to tequila has the benefit of making the sstrong drink drainkable, and a longer drink. Why bother with the proportions? Surely more tonic is better? No. Why? Because too much tonic dilutes not just the alcohol but also the flavour. A customer or guest might think they had been cheated, or that the server was ignorant, or running out of alcohol.

Tonic can contain sweetener which could be bad for your health (e.g. diabetes) or affect your weight loss diet.

So, the more you know, the more you can get the drink just right for the drinker. And plenty to discuss over your drinks and food.

Whilst listening to the original recording of the song Tequila by band, The Champs. And numerous other songs about Tequila.

If you do get to Tequila in Mexico, you can learn about the drink from The National Museum of Tequila, and from distilleries.

A hotel has the historic wheel used to grind up the plants, which is now done mechanically.

There's lots more to learn about tequila. Many brands to try. Different version of tequila, . Assorted cocktails.

The Red Rooster - Mexican Spanish

Angela Lansbury wearing a Red Rooster cap. Photo by Angela Lansbury.

I love this red cap. It goes with all my red clothes.

I remember the words of the song, 'Where did you get that hat?'  Rooster Rojo, the name embroidered on my red cap, is a Mexican brand name. Rooster Rojo means red rooster in Spanish. Rojo meas red. Rooster, the same as English. The adjective goes after the noun it describes.

The rooster is a well known symbol of Mexico. A rooster is an adult male chicken, in the UK called a cock. Red rooster is nicely alliterative in English, as is Rooster Rojo in Spanish.

The brand is owned by Amber Beverage Group (ABG) and distributed in the UK by Ocado.

Tobacco Dock, Wapping, what's inside and nearby?

East of Tower Bridge on the north bank of the river Thames, is Wapping, a name which probabl meant marsh. The marsh was drained to make docks on the river Thames, with lots of assocations with trade worldwide, Wool and leather from sheep in Australasia, tobacco from Virginia. The Prospect of Whitby pub is a local landmark and being familiar with the history of the East End I was interested in the mural showing the Battle of Cable Street.

I went to Tobacco Dock, a restored historic venue, to the BCB beverage, bar and spirits show. On the way my day started with a visual reminder of the past of the area, the mural recalling the Battle of Cable Street. The mural is by several artists and was inspired by the style of Diego Rivera whose lively political murals crowded with tough wroking people I had seen in the USA.

We walked, 5-7 minutes from Wapping station,

The Battle of Cable Street Mural

We walked through St George's Gardens, a park with a giant mural on the side of the town hall at the entrance. The mural shows the famous 1936 event, They shall not pass blockage of the demonstration march by Mosley and fascists through what was then a Jewish area. The mural was on our left.

The St George's Church

Shortly afterwards we passed the church on our right . Gravestones leaned around the outdoor walls in front of the open area.

The Monument to Brewer & Philanthropist Raine

In front of the church was a monument.

The monument to wealthy widower and philanthropist, brewer Raine, in St George's Church, Wapping.. Photo by Angela Lansbury.

I diverted to read about who it commemorated. That man, Raine, was a wealty brewer had devoted his life to the church and charity after the death or his young wife, Sarah, who died 6 months after they married. He never remarried. He gave money for a school for 50 boys and 50 girls. When they left school, the boys were apprenticed to .trades and the girls went into domestic service. The school lasted until 2020

I got to thinking about the boys having their apprenticeships arranged by the school. Surely modern school leavers should not be cast out after merely being given advice, and left to find jobs. Every school and university should have an onsite office arranging jobs, helping compose CVs, printing CVs, oragnising references, training leavers for interviews. Checking that pupils are studying subjects which will get them qualifications required by employers and universities.

I saw a moored boat. Two replica boats were built to teach local children the history of the area.

Then we reached our destination. Tobacco Docks. No sign of the history of the docks, nor of tobacco, but it's all online.

Cable Street Museal close up. Photo by Angela Lansbury.

Tobacco Dock. Photo by Angela Lansbury.

However a very distinctive building. I met the venue on one of the hottest days of the year. The building would benefit from being completely enclosed by a rectractable roof when weather conditions such as snow, or rain or excessive heat require it. Instead open walkways lead between air conditioned side halls and smaller rooms.

BCB Events

However, the BCB Bar Convent management did a great job. They had water bottles and water refill points and aair con in the rooms containing stage areas. You really felt you had visited old London, restored.
