What to see in Finland? First, where is it? the easterly of the Scandinavian countries, bordering Russia. You could travel on Finnish Air to Helsinki Airport.

ICE HOTEL, NICE HOTEL, ICE WEDDING CHAPEL, OR AN ALL YEAR ICE BAR IN FLORIDA?

Vodka at Ice Bar, Orlando, Florida, USA. Open all year.

CANADA

JAPAN

ROMANIA

SWEDEN

The first ice hotel was in Sweden. You can stay in an ice hotel until April 2021. North Sweden is not your only option.

You could also pick an ice hotel in Canada or Finland.

If you don't have the time or money or are not sure whether this will suit you, you could try an ice bar.

ICE Bar

One in Florida, USA is open all year. It also claims to be the world's largest ice bar.

Ice Hotel[edit]

The Hôtel de Glace (English: Ice Hotel) first opened in January 2001. 85 rooms are furnished with ice beds covered with deer furs and mattresses and equipped with arctic sleeping bags.[1] It was originally located on the shores of Lac-Saint-Joseph, Quebec, 31 minutes north of Quebec City, but has since moved closer to the city, 10 minutes away from Old Town Quebec.[6] It operates from the first week in January to the last week in March.[7] It has the adjacent Le Quatre Temps restaurant, an ice bar named Absolut Ice Bar, which serves Absolut Vodka and other beverages, sauna and outdoor hot tub.[3][8] Construction involves the use of blocks of ice and snow.[8] In 2005, construction involved "400 tons of clear ice blocks, trucked in from Montreal, and 12,000 tons of snow produced on site."[8] Beds are constructed of ice, which are topped with "a wooden boxspring and mattress",[3] and mummy-style sleeping bags are provided.[3] The hotel offers paid tours, the participants of which are allowed to use the ice bar until midnight.[3] Ice Hotel was previously the only ice hotel in North America.[3]

Finland[edit]

SnowCastle of Kemi[edit]

The SnowCastle of Kemi in Kemi, Finland is the largest snow fort in the world, is rebuilt every winter and has a snow hotel[10] with double rooms and a honeymoon suite. The facility also has a restaurant, chapel, and ice sculptures.[10] It is near the Gulf of Bothnia.[10] The style of the facility, including the theme, shape, size and decorations, changes annually.[10]

Lainio Snow Village[edit]

The Lainio Snow Village is located 150 km north of the Arctic Circle in Lapland.[11] This snow hotel is built in the winter atop a wood building. In 2007, construction began in November, and in early November, it began providing lodging.[11] The hotel has restrooms and a sauna, and the village has a restaurant.[11] Rooms are decorated with artwork created from snow.[11] In 2007, art students contributed to the art with professional artists.[11] In the summer, the village provides log cabin lodging.[11]

Japan[edit]

The Alpha Resort Tomamu in the Shimukappu village of Hokkaido Island in Japan builds and opens an ice hotel every year.[12] It may be Japan's first ice hotel, and everything in it is constructed from ice.[12][13] The hotel interiors are typically −3 to −5 °C. Guests dine on ice tables and sit on ice chairs covered with sheepskin. The hotel provides sheepskin apparel for guests to stay warm.[12]

Ice hotel (Jukkasjärvi)
  • 1 Ice Hotel (Ishotellet), Marknadsvägen 63 +46 980 668 00 A hotel constructed entirely out of ice. There are many copycats now, but this is the original. Outdoor activities such as dogsled tours are arranged by the hotel but reservation may be advisable, and cheaper alternatives may be available from companies in nearby Kiruna. Remember that winter in Lapland can be very cold, and though Ishotellet provides snowsuits and boots, you may need to bring equipment such as expedition-grade gloves, face masks, and goggles depending on conditions. Read the weather forecast. It is also possible to visit the ice hotel as a tourist attraction without actually spending a night there. It is worth seeing the ice sculptures in the rooms and in the floors. While much of the ice hotel exists only between November and May, a few suites are preserved and open all year around. A stay will cost you upwards of €300/night. Icehotel (Q3139943) on Wikidata

UK

I wanted to go to the Ice bar in London for my birthday in March. Then I discovered a few restrictions. First it was expensive. Secondly, you had to book a time and could not stay there the whole evening. thirdly you had to be warmly dressed which ruled out most of my pretty evening clothes.

I might be middling it up with the naked restaurant and the blind restaurant. Anyway, all three sounded amusing but I never made it to any of them for my birthday. We ended up eating locally so we could get home soon after eating and drinking.

White Christmas? Lights & Sleigh Rides? Novelty Christmas Street Lights In Singapore and Xmas Lights Around The World

Orchard Road Xmas lights by Tanglin Mall (right) in December 2019. Photo by Angela Lansbury.

This photo was taken from a moving bus through the closed window. This year's novelty Christmas lights idea is to show piled up parcels forming a triangular tree shape topped by a star.

To the right of the picture is Tanglin Mall.

Where have I seen the best lights?

Also see all the
Shopping malls,

First stop is right in the centre of London.

Regent Street Light. London, England, especially both ends of Regent Street. At one end is Piccadilly Circus. At the other end is Hamleys Department store and Oxford Street at Oxford Circus.

More lights adorn Selfridges department store windows and columns in Oxford Street.

Another must see is the grand Harrods in Knightsbridge.

The out of London shopping malls near London include the famous big malls and the one at Watford.

See the big tree donated to the UK from Norway every year in gratitude for help in WWII.

USA
New York
In New York and other big cities sometimes an upright oblong skyscraper is decorated like a giant parcel with strings of lights up the centre suggesting ribbon and a bow.New York and Washington DC can be cold in winter (and sweltering in summer).

Xmas tree in front of Rockefeller Centre, New York. From Wikipedia.

Outside the cities in a countryside hotel we took a Xmas sleigh ride on Xmas Day or the day before or after, at the Snowed Inn, Utah.

Florida
Many malls compete to provide selfie spaces. Santa grottoes in the USA and UK malls with photo opportunities and usually for a fee a chance of a photo with Santa and a toy

One year the powers that be in a city in the USA offered a prize for the best prepared Xmas lights. Apparently this is done in many places in the USA. This is a bit like Britain in Bloom, offers prizes for the best summer flowers in gardens in the UK. Local papers take pictures in the lead up.

Finland
Finally, Finland has Santa villages and Elves and you can book a holiday featuring Santa Claus and reindeer, models and real reindeer.

Buy Blueiron blueberry and iron from Comed

A company called Comed was promoting their products at Vitafoods two-day exhibition in Singapore. Their blue drink tastes lovely. The idea is that lots of people are short of iron. So here's a handy supploment. You could make iron naturally by eating more vegetables such as broccoli and eating more liver regularly, but most people don't. The blueberry is added for the taste.

The company is in Finland, www.comed.fi.  In the UK they are distributed by Blackrock Parmaceuticals to Tesco and Boots and Tree of Life natural products chain of shops.

Which flag is which? First, fun recognising flags. Then, cheers for Macedonia's Red and Yellow Flag

Do you know these flags?
Flag of France
Problem
Can you name the countries of all the flags above? So many flags are three bands of colour, horizontal or vertical. Descending red, white and blue is France. Red, white and blue with the coat of arms in the middle is Croatia.

Italy's flag is green, white and red vertically. Italian restaurants often make a three colour starter, green salad, white cheese, red tomato.

Other flags are a white cross on a contrasting background. Some look like a plus sign.

CROSSES
Switzerland has the white cross sign on red.
Flag of Switzerland
(Opposite of the red cross sign.)

Two flags waving

Iran has another sign for medical help incorporating a dragon but we are getting sidetracked. Let's go back to flags.

What's this - which country.
Red with a white cross that extends to the edges of the flag; the vertical part of the cross is shifted to the hoist side

One plus-sign is off-centre. That's Denmark. Mark Denmark down as being different.

Depending on how you focus your eyes, you see either a white cross on a red background, or four red squares on a white background.

Flag of SwedenEU-Sweden (orthographic projection).svg

Here's another off centre flag. Sweden, surrounded by sea.

Flag of NorwayEurope-Norway (orthographic projection).svg

This one is way out. Two crosses. It's Norway. Far west. Goes beyond the bacon red of Denmark (Danish bacon) and the blue of Sweden.

Iceland is a similar design, different colours.

The reverse: red cross on a blue background. How do you remember which is which? Iceland is completely surrounded by sea, so it has the blue squares.
Flag of Iceland

Here's the flag of Finland. Blue on white.

White backgrounds. The trouble with white backgrounds, is that the flag background disappears on white paper. The solution is to find a photo of a flag waving against a blue sky. I found this out with the flag of Japan.

Other white background flags are Singapore and Poland.Flag of Singapore

Singapore flags fly from apartment blocks on National Day, and hang around all year.

Russian and Bulgaria also have white horizontals. Russia's is white, blue, red.
File:Flag of Russia.svg
From Wikipedia the photo by Vexillus shows the Russian flag flying.(I keep rewriting that sentence to be accurate. The photo is by Vexillus, not the flag nor the entire Wikipedia.)

Slovakia and Slovenia also have a white stripe at the top, blue in the centre, red below, with a lozenge distinguishing them from Russia.

Other flags look like the letter X.

Let's do a hunt. Wikipedia has small flags and large flags. Here are the small ones.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_sovereign_states

Foreigners, tourists might have a problem. Residents know their own country's flags. Or do they?

Union Jack
The Union Jack was a flag which combined three flags. I can recognize, when I think about it, that the Union Jack has a red cross in the middle and that's the flag of England. In the 21st century, we've been seeing it a lot, now that cars can fly the flag of the English football team. In the 20th century, I would have recognized the Union Jack, but the England flag.

I still have trouble remembering which way up the Union Jack goes. I think the broad band of white is supposed to be uppermost next to the upright support.

Why does it matter? Because, if you fly the flag upside down, it's a distress signal. That matters when you are out at sea. Boy scouts on boats and people working in the navy or merchant navy know this.

Every now and then somebody gets it wrong and you read about the conflict in the newspapers. Outrage! The nitpickers are throwing insults at the 'didn't-knows' and 'don't-cares'. (I just made up those words.) The 'get-it-right!' brigade is pitted against the 'what-does-it-matter?' brigade. You look at the flag and try to learn it again.

Vertical Stripe Flags
France: Red, white and Blue.
Italy. Green, white and red.
Flag of France
France

Horizontal Stripes
 Russia. Germany.
Netherlands: Red, white and blue.

Russia: White, blue and red. Starting with the white Russians.
Germany: Black, red, yellow.
File:Flag of Germany.svg
The German flag.

The Stars of Australia and New Zealand
Australia is a bigger place. One big star and more.

Flag of Republic of Macedonia
Macedonia's Flag
Finally, newest kid on the block. Macedonia.
You would not confuse this distinctive flag of Macedonia with anybody else's! It's Macedonia!

It turns out that neighbouring Greece is the main trading partner and benefactor of Macedonia. So, finally, they have reached a compromise and I think the new flag is terrific. You can see it for miles. That's what a flag is for.

I see a pattern in small and large events. Macedonia and Greece, are like a son who left home and wanted to be independent and father is worried that the son wants to take over Dad's property.

Another analogy is the companies where the son sets up a rival business such as a hotel group, and wants to continue using the family name. They go to court and eventually an agreement is reached for two separate brands, with similar names, which confuse some of the public. When you look into, you find you now have two distinctive countries, Greece and Macedonia, with a shared history, both of which are worth visiting.

You might say the flag is garish. It's very modern. I can recognize it instantly, with no effort. That's what a flag is for.  I like it.
