When Flying, Prepare for Flies and First Aid, Mosquitos, Repellent

I got bitten. In the garden. London, England.

Do I need a nurse, doctor, ambulance, A and E appointment? Probably just trip to the chemis\s (Americans say pharmacy) (in the UK we say chemists).

I looked up the home remedies. I could apply ice - but not for too long. In Singapore I could have used aloe vera which we have growing on our balcony.

How to cook eggs for breakfast and drink fresh coffee in a hotel room

I read about a woman who returned to Australia and was quarantined in a five star hotel but without a microwave oven.

An Iron As Hotplate
She made herself apple crumble and other foods heated up on an upturned iron, which acted as a hotplate, secured between two heavy books.

She chopped up an apple with a penknife. (Any hotel can send you a knife. A five star hotel has 24 hour room service.)

Her cooking utensil was an aluminium tray you get with takeway food. I presume the crumble was a ready mix. But you can mix flour and water with fat such as butter to make crumble. the advantage is crumble is it is just flour rolled up into balls, no need for a rolling pin to roll it out into pastry. A hotel usually has sugar sachets. If you have flown overseas or on a long flight within a country, you might have meal service inclding a sachet of salt.

Most fast food places have condiments which seem unnecessary at the time but can be just the ticket later. For example, most take away piza comes with extra sachets of cheese and pepper or spicy sprinkles.

You can also buy packets of individual portions of cheese. If you save bread from your brakfast, ideally with a butter or margarine sachet,  you can add a cheese portion, or the cheese sachet and sprinkles left over from the pizza, and you have a mid-morning snack.

I was wondering whether she could have demanded a microwave, or bought herself one (if she was getting free food for a fortnight, she could afford a cheap microwave.

Some hotels don't like you cooking in the room. Why? consdier their point of view. It uses their electricity. It is a fire risk. You are making crumbs which attract rats and cockroaches and flies. You are deprivin them of sales of over-priced food from their kitchen.

On the other hand, they might be short-staffed and keen to keep you happy or just flexible.

Do a health and safety assessment first. What could go wrong? How can you prevent it going wrong?

Can you leave the room as you found it?

Simple solution - Suites
A simpler solution was one we adoped as a family of three in the USA. If you are staying longer than a week, go to an all suites hotel. There you have a larger living room, often a bigger dining table where you can eat or work, and a microwave.

You need to buy in food to bring with, or have it delivered.

Eggs
Years ago we were in a UK hotel room which had nothing but a kettle and we needed breakfast. I said, What I would like is an egg.

The corner shop across the road had eggs.

No chance of making scrambled eggs. But what about boiled eggs? We had hot , boiled water, from the kettle. Just pour the water over the egg in a cup.

We did consider putting the egg inside the kettle. If the egg breaks, you get an awful mess.

Coddled Egg
You could bring your own kettle from home, a small one, ideally one with a flat base inside and not an exposed element, so it is easier to clean and empty.

My husband used to do this as a student at Aberdeen university in Scotland. He had an egg pricker to make a hole in the egg so it would not burst. He added vinegar to the water to coagulate whites if the egg splits or leaks through the hole.

Coffee Pods
One year we were on holiday in Wales and my husband was not happy with the quality of the coffee. he drove to the nearest city and bought the cheapest coffee pod machine which came with a set of coffee pods. We were on holiday for a long weekend. He had his breakfast coffee and mid monring coffee and lnch time coffee and mid afternoon coffee and after dinner coffee for 2 days.  Some for me too.

He drinks black coffee. A pint of milk was available from the nearby Tesco supermarket and stayed cold on the windowsill.  He reckoned the price was not much more than the cost of bying all those coffees in the restaurant or bar.

With planning and ingenuity, or asking what is available, you can often find a solution.

Bite remedies And Where To Buy And Get Advice

Problem
I went online and researched all the possible home remedies for bites. I read about make a past of oatmeal or using apple cider vinegar, or baking soda.

I tried.
The basic remedy for soothing is calamine lotion. I also considered doing some late night hoovering to get rid of any nesting places or food for insects.

During a trip to Morrisons supermarket I asked an assistant for help. I was already at checkout at closing time (10 pm) so I carried on checking out whilst she ran to find something for me. I shouted, "Anything for bites and stings - the smallest and cheapest!"

It's handy to have small lotions and potions when travelling. Less to carry. Less problem at security. Less cost to replace when it goes out of date.

She brought back Anthisan. I typed antisan thinking of anti insect. Then I noticed it started ANTH with an H and corrected my typing.
A few mornings later the bites were still stinging.

I considered going to the doctor. But I didn't have an apointment and didn't want to wait a day. They will put you in as an emergency, first thing, or in a gap or cancellation, but I don't want to do that if I can avoid it. If you keep inundating them with last minute 'emergencies' they will be less inclined to help you and others.

I looked online for NHS direct. I went through their initial question, which included, do you have any exiting medical condition. That was useful. It reminded me about allergies. I might be allergic to some medications, if they contained aspiric or penicillin.

Next I was asked to make a contribution of £5. hm. I was expecting a free service. This is what I saw:

If I were calling from the USA, I might think that good value, but am I going to be asked for more as a subscription. I hae already paid through taxes on income for the NHS which is free to all in the UK.

What's more, signs in the window of the UK pharmacies and online encourage you to try your pharmacy first, before taking up the doctor's time. I'd rather wait five minutes in the pharmacy than half an hour at the doctor. If the pharmacy thinks it's serious, I can go to the doctor without worrying that I'm wasting their time.

UK Pharmacy
So I go to the pharmacy. He looks at my leg and says, "It's not too bad."

Wonderful. Not as bad as I thought. A good pice of NLP too. That's neuro linguistic programming. Forget the N. Linguistic programming. Positive language. Tell the patient they are getting better and they will get better, or at least they will feel happier.

Hurray for the NHS. Hurray for the pharmacy. Now that the bites are going down, it seems like a bad dream, a fuss. But at least I have the photos as evidence.

The moral of the story is"
1 You can get over the counter medication late at night from a late night or all night supermarket.

2 You can get information about minor and major health concerns on the internet.

3 You can get advice on the internet - but check against scams before parting with money.

4 Pharmacies in Britain will give advice. You are not being a nuisance. The government wants you to do this rather than wasting a doctor's time for milder ailments. The pharmacy will be glad for you to go in and get familiar with their shop. They are paid for dispensing medicines. They also make a profit if you buy something. You might buy something today. You might come back another time and buy something once you know them and feel at home and friendly towards their friendly staff.

Where to Find Soft Water and How To Deal With Hard Water

Problem
London has hard water. It's a joy to visit other areas of the UK which have soft water.

Derbyshire
Swanwick in Derbyshire has a Writers' Summer School in summer. You go there to meet writers, learn to write plays and poetry and short stories and novels. The soft water is a bonus.

Wales
In Springtime, there's a Writers' Holiday at Fishguard in Wales. Again, to Londoners, the soft water is a recurring pleasure.

Madeira
Countries such as Madeira also have soft water. In Madeira, my hair was so soft that another traveller commented on it. She asked what I had done.

After I washed my old night-dress, it felt silky smooth and like a new garment.

London, England
In London, you need to wipe around taps. Be sure not to use a cleaner which damages the chrome plating, aluminium or the enamel surface. This involves a lot of reading of small print on big bottles of ferocious cleaner.

You would not want to use bleach on items which you later use for food. You need to use vinegar on glassware and jugs to clear the white limescale smears.

Limescale

Own brand lime scale removers can be bought at under £2 from supermarkets in London, England, UK.
