Tobacco Dock, Wapping, what's inside and nearby?

East of Tower Bridge on the north bank of the river Thames, is Wapping, a name which probabl meant marsh. The marsh was drained to make docks on the river Thames, with lots of assocations with trade worldwide, Wool and leather from sheep in Australasia, tobacco from Virginia. The Prospect of Whitby pub is a local landmark and being familiar with the history of the East End I was interested in the mural showing the Battle of Cable Street.

I went to Tobacco Dock, a restored historic venue, to the BCB beverage, bar and spirits show. On the way my day started with a visual reminder of the past of the area, the mural recalling the Battle of Cable Street. The mural is by several artists and was inspired by the style of Diego Rivera whose lively political murals crowded with tough wroking people I had seen in the USA.

We walked, 5-7 minutes from Wapping station,

The Battle of Cable Street Mural

We walked through St George's Gardens, a park with a giant mural on the side of the town hall at the entrance. The mural shows the famous 1936 event, They shall not pass blockage of the demonstration march by Mosley and fascists through what was then a Jewish area. The mural was on our left.

The St George's Church

Shortly afterwards we passed the church on our right . Gravestones leaned around the outdoor walls in front of the open area.

The Monument to Brewer & Philanthropist Raine

In front of the church was a monument.

The monument to wealthy widower and philanthropist, brewer Raine, in St George's Church, Wapping.. Photo by Angela Lansbury.

I diverted to read about who it commemorated. That man, Raine, was a wealty brewer had devoted his life to the church and charity after the death or his young wife, Sarah, who died 6 months after they married. He never remarried. He gave money for a school for 50 boys and 50 girls. When they left school, the boys were apprenticed to .trades and the girls went into domestic service. The school lasted until 2020

I got to thinking about the boys having their apprenticeships arranged by the school. Surely modern school leavers should not be cast out after merely being given advice, and left to find jobs. Every school and university should have an onsite office arranging jobs, helping compose CVs, printing CVs, oragnising references, training leavers for interviews. Checking that pupils are studying subjects which will get them qualifications required by employers and universities.

I saw a moored boat. Two replica boats were built to teach local children the history of the area.

Then we reached our destination. Tobacco Docks. No sign of the history of the docks, nor of tobacco, but it's all online.

However a very distinctive building. I met the venue on one of the hottest days of the year. The building would benefit from being completely enclosed by a rectractable roof when weather conditions such as snow, or rain or excessive heat require it. Instead open walkways lead between air conditioned side halls and smaller rooms.

BCB Events

However, the BCB Bar Convent management did a great job. They had water bottles and water refill points and aair con in the rooms containing stage areas. You really felt you had visited old London, restored.

Getting There

Wapping (Overground) and Shadwell (Overground and DLR) stations.  Wapping station is one stop on the DLR, changing at Bank station, on the northern line from Euston. (Also several other train routes and buses.).

See Banksy Murals In London - and more murals planned in Rayners Lane and Harrow & Wealdstone, public input invited!

Hurray - murals are planned to enhance Harrow and Wealdstone and Rayners Lane. the designs are displayed and the public's comments are invited. I like all the designs submitted for public reaction. The trees design looks great. The railway train design is terrific.

I am glad the neglected north of London will have murals to match those in Central, East and South London.

London already has many murals.

The historical event of the Battle of Cable Street, a major political story, is in the East End of London.

BANKSY MURALS

Near Waterloo station and on the South Bank, Banksy painted the girl with a balloon, which was painted over. However, we are indebted to LYDIA with her SALAD days for the photo which was put on Flickr and copied to Wikipedia where I found it.

Latest version of the Banksy, girl with a red heart shape balloon.

Earlier lost version by Banksy.

A later version of the mural was painted nearby. Wiki has a list of murals all over London. I have also written posts about murals in other parts of the world.

The Battle Of Cable Street and Shadwell Stations

Photo of Tower Hamlets Environment Trust pinky red plaque about The Battle Of Cable Street, 1936. Photo from Wikipedia. "THEY SHALL NOT PASS"
Problem
Where is the mural about the Battle of Cable Street?

Answer
In London's East End, near two Shadwell stations, only a stop away from Bank station on the red Central Line in the city near Tower Bridge.

The battle of Cable Street took place here on the 4th October 1936 when the fascist Oswald Mosley and his Blackshirts tried to march through. The slogan was: "They shall not pass".

The mural shows the police with helmets and the police horses.

How to see the mural
The mural is on Cable Street, on the plain bricks walls of a couple of linked buildings, the town hall. If you want to go there the nearest stations are the Shadwell underground and above your head, above the street, the Shadwell station on the Docklands Light railway. (Also three buses. See link at end.)

My Story
I must have passed through Shadwell on the Docklands Light Railway, gliding along like passengers at Disney World and theme parks, looking down at the streets below, many times. At least three times a year, in the morning and again in the evening on my way to and from the annual World Travel Market at the brightly lit, huge, stifling hot and stuffy waterside Excel exhibition centre, where the staff of tourist boards, hotels, airlines, tour companies and travel writers gather indoors, every year, watching sales girls from South America and Africa and Las Vegas, dance and praise in swimsuits and grass skirts, prompting summer and winter escapes from London's chilly November.

I have never thought to wonder whether Shadwell was originally built over a well. Nor did I realise that the famous Cable Street was just below, with a mural and plaque commemorating the occasion. If I have time to visit an exhibition at ExCel this year, I must make a point of getting off the train at Shadwell and seeking out the mural in the morning, because in the evening I was be tired, laden with shopping bags and the light will be fading.

If I miss the mural on the way to or from ExCel, I could take a side trip from Bank station when visiting a restaurant or shop or exhibition in the city.

What are your chances of seeing the Battle of Cable Street mural? The mural was been damaged in the past but the council has promised that if it is ever vandalised it will be restored and it is now protected by CCTV.

You can see the station staff with their orange high-visibility outfits and their megaphones. These people shout directions and will answer questions about any station you are going to. They will help you find your way from one part of the station to another when you are wanting to change onto the DLR or get off it and onto another line.

Diego Rivera's Grave, JFK, Assisi and Murals Worldwide Including Banksy, Poems and The Graffiti Wall Art of Hollywood, Florida

Murals probably started when the first caveman painted catch of the day on the walls of his cave. Nowadays murals can paint political statements, recall historical events such as the Battle of Cable Street in the Thirties in London's East End, internationally known characters such as JFK, modern personalities such as footballer Ronaldo, or Banksy trample l'oeuil paintings which make you laugh.

Outdoor Murals
The great thing about murals is that most of the outdoor ones are free to see. They brighten up what would otherwise be dull bits of wall.

Indoor Restaurants
Indoors you can enjoy a glimpse of the outdoors in restaurants and cellar bars.

EUROPE
Ancient Graffiti and Murals.
ITALY
Murals have been popular since the times of the Romans. Think of Pompei.

Frescoes are a type of mural painted onto a damp background.
Grand mansions are decorated with trompe l'oeuil.

Wiki says of The Last Supper:
The Last Supper is a late 15th-century mural painting by Leonardo da Vinci in the refectory of the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie, Milan. It is one of the world's most famous paintings.

Cathedrals have murals on ceilings and walls. Perugia, capital of Umbria, has murals inside the cathedral and town hall.

St Francis of Assisi appears on murals in Cathedrals, museums and religious buildings all over Umbria in Italy.

US
In America Diego Rivera painted murals: Detroit.

Modern Murals
Modern cities such as Bristol in England have Banksy and other artists.

London has dozens of murals. A mural society has a whole page of links and pictures. One of my favourites is the Hokusai wave in Camberwell, SE London.

In East London a mural commemorates the Battle of Cable Street, on Sunday 4th October, 1936. I am very interested in this and feature it in my novel based on my family history. The mural is at 236, Cable Street, E1 OBL, near Shadwell Railway station. It was inspired by Diego Rivera's fish eye lens effect; also Goya's painting of The Third of May 1801 which hangs in the Prado art museum in Madrid, capital of Spain. (See more about the Cable Street mural and Shadwell station wall decorations in the later posts on September 29th 2017.)

Birmingham has a mural of JFK.

USA
In the USA the city of Philadelphia in Pennsylvania is known for murals.

More Murals Needed
Tell the graffiti people and tourist boards of major cities such as London and Bucharest and Brasov in Romania that the Florida murals are the sort of graffiti which cities worldwide should be growing, sponsoring, commissioning and promoting.
