The biggest, best, most, highest, tallest - what has your country got? Here's Tanzania.

Flag of Tanzania.

Map of the world showing Tanzania on the East African Coast.

From Tanzania I received this message:

Tanzania has the highest mountain in Africa, the Kilimanjaro.

Elephant and snow-capped Kilimanjaro.

My husband did this climb, once. (I exercise daily, by climbing out of bed.)

A climber on Kilimanjaro.

Victoria, Tanganyika and Nyasa the three largest lakes in Africa are also largely in Tanzania.

Serengeti, the world largest game reserves and many other national parks are available in Tanzania.

What does your country have? Or your favourite country?

More on Tanzania
Art. Tingatinga painting.

Wikipedia reveals:

Tingatinga (also spelt Tinga-tinga or Tinga Tinga) is a painting style that developed in the second half of the 20th century in the Oyster Bay area in Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) and later spread to most East Africa. Tingatinga is one of the most widely represented forms of tourist-oriented paintings in Tanzania, Kenya and neighboring countries. The genre is named after its founder, Tanzanian painter Edward Said Tingatinga.

The Tingatinga school of painting sold their work in Oyster Bay, Dar es Salaam. Picture from 1973

Tingatinga is traditionally made on masonite, using several layers of bicycle paint, which makes for a brilliant and highly saturated colors. Many elements of the style are related to requirements of the tourist-oriented market; for example, the paintings are usually small so they can be easily transported, and subjects are intended to appeal to the Europeans and Americans (e.g., the big five and other wild fauna).

A feature of the art, which was probably inspired by murals on the outside of houses in Tanzania, is the filling of the entire canvas.

In visual arthorror vacui (UK/ˌhɒrə ˈvækju/US/- ˈvɑːk-/Latin for 'fear of empty space'), also referred to as kenophobia (from Greek for 'fear of the empty'), is the filling of the entire surface of a space or an artwork with detail. In physics, horror vacui reflects Aristotle's idea that "nature abhors an empty space."

The tallest land Animals - giraffes

(Where next? The famous Giraffe Manor hotel is in Nairobi, Kenya. Costing over 600 dollars a night if you can get a room. It has 12 bedrooms. Next door is a giraffe sanctuary where you can meet giraffes.)

Monuments
Arusha Declaration Monument, has murals around the plinths of the arches.

If you climb Kilimanjaro, you will have ample opportunities to buy tee-shirts with the word Kilimanaro on them.
However, if you don't want casual clothes but something special and national look for a Kanzu for men.

The male costume, especially for formal occasions, is a white or cream coloured kaftan or Kanzu or robe or floor-length tunic. The kanzu is worn with a cap called a Kofia. (Other African countries wear the same or similar).

the female common costume is a kitenge, a wax print, brightly coloured, oblong sarong, edged on the long side. It can be wrapped around the body, used as a baby sling, a head-dress, a table cloth or wall hanging.

A suitcase that weighs itself

My family has a small weighing device that you can add to any suitcase.

But if you can afford it, indulge in a suitcase which weighs itself.

The device might need a battery. Check whether you have batteries in stock. Also compare the prices of sellers - and whether the price includes the batteries.

Pack the device so that you can check the weight of your luggage on the way home. If you expect to return home with souvenirs, or gifts from others, travel out with less than the maximum weight. Or be prepared to wear some of the heavier packed items on the way home.

A Quick Look At Landlocked Laos

Laos is in Asia. Laos is landlocked. The only landlocked country in Asia. So forget beach holidays by the sea.

Transport

Temple in Laos

Writing in Laos

Train in Laos

Bridge in Laos

Plain of Jars. Popular tourist attraction.

Wat means temple. See many statues of revered Buddha.
The capital and biggest city is Vientiane.

Laos

Flag of Laos
Laos is landlocked. Surrounding countries are Cambodia, China, Burma (now called Myanmar), Vietnam.
The capital of Laos is Vientiane, which, as you can see is on the border with Thailand.
A major site is the huge golden temple with many bulbous golden roof sections.

Vientiane is actually pronounced "Wieng Chan", and the letter x is always read as an "s".

The three main attractions are:

1 The gilded temple in the capital which is the national symbol,

2 The plain of jars, and
3 another temple.

Otherwise lots of outdoor activities, waterfalls and caves.

Like Cambodia, you will see tuk-tuks.

Wikivoyage says

Lao food is very similar to that eaten in the northeastern Isaan region of Thailand: very spicy, more often bitter than sweet, and using lots of fresh herbs and vegetables served raw. Some of the raw vegetables can be used to cool your mouth when the chilis are overwhelming.

Rice is the staple carbohydrate. The standard kind is sticky rice (ເຂົ້າໜຽວkhao niaow), eaten by hand from small baskets called tip khao. Using your right hand, never your left, pinch off a bit, roll into a ball, dip and munch away.

The national dish is laap (ລາບ, also larb), a "salad" of minced meat mixed with herbs, spices, lime juice and, more often than not, blistering amounts of chili. Unlike Thai larb, the Lao version can use raw meat (dip) instead of cooked meat (suk), and if prepared with seafood makes a tasty, if spicy, carpaccio.

Another Lao invention is tam maak hung (ຕໍາຫມາກຫຸ່ງ), the spicy green papaya salad known as som tam in Thailand, but which the Lao like to dress with fermented crab (ປູດອງ pudem) and a chunky, intense fish sauce called pa daek (ປາແດກ), resulting in a stronger flavour than the milder, sweeter Thai style. Other popular dishes include ping kai, spicy grilled chicken, and mok pa, fish steamed in a banana leaf.

Laos also boasts a range of local desserts. Kanom kok is a small, spherical pudding made from coconut milk, tapioca and ground rice. Sang kaya mayru is a pumpkin filled with a sweet custard and then steamed. The pumpkin itself is also sweet, and the resulting mixture can be quite delicious. Sticky rice with mango or durian is also a popular snack.

In addition to purely Lao food, culinary imports from other countries are common. Khao jii pat-te, French baguettes stuffed with pâté, and foe (pho) noodles from China are both ubiquitous snacks particularly popular at breakfast. Foe can refer to thin rice noodles (Vietnamese pho), and to the wide flat noodles that would be called guay tiow in Thailand.

Drink[edit]

Sunset and Beerlao by the Mekong, Vientiane

The national drink of Laos is the ubiquitous and tasty Beerlao, made with Laotian jasmine rice and one of the few Lao exports. It maintains an almost mythical status among travellers and beer aficionados. The yellow logo with its tiger-head silhouette can be seen everywhere, and a large 640 ml bottle shouldn't cost more than 10,000 to 15,000 kip in restaurants. It's available in three versions: original (5%), dark (6.5%) and light (2.9%). The brewery claims they have 99% market share.

Rice spirit, known as lao-lao, is everywhere,

Beerlau is rice beer. The Beerlau website's history page describes Laos as a luscious landlocked land, forgotten jewel of Far East Asia..

WARY WARNINGS - STAY SAFE

The warnings on Wikivoyage include dengue fever, drinking only bottled water, avoiding drugs - which can incur the death penalty as in other neighbouring countries including Malaysia and Singapore, and more.

Interestingly, women must not touch monks (and vice versa), some of them won't talk to others, although they speak the language, and they don't accept money, only food which women place on the ground in front of them, so monks demanding money are imposters. Enough to dent my desire to go there immediately and be happy that I am forced by Covid-19 to postpone my next trip indefinitely and stay safe at home and to simply enjoy the pleasure of reading all about the attraction and admiring the photos and dreaming of the food, which I shall hunt out online.

Sounds very similar to the temples of Cambodia, and the communism of Vietnam, and the cuisine of Thailand, not surprisingly when the history of the countries is intermingled.

Laos Dress

To end on a happy note, from a woman's point of view, in addition to the calm yet exhilarating colours of the gold temples and orange robed monks, the national dress for women of sarongs and conical hats is most appealing.

The shawl is called a sbai.

SINGAPORE

Singapore has several restaurants which serve Lao food or a mixed menu of food from Laos and another country. When the dining restrictions are lifted I shall eat at a Lao restaurant or get a member of my family to collect a take away to try it out.

New Highway Code Supposed to Protect Pedestrians and Cyclists

Oops. The highway code in your house may be out of date.

The road safety rules, regulations and recommendations are being changed in the UK. The idea is to protect the most vulnerable, the pedestrians. Going up the hierarchy, cyclists, motorcyclists, cars, vans, heavy goods vehicles. Horse riders are included. The rules will bring the UK more in line with Germany, Japan and Singapore.

Two major things I noticed. When, as a pedestrian, I am crossing a road, not just on a zebra crossing, but especially on a corner, traffic turning into my road from the main road is supposed to stop and wait. (Not swing around fast, nor hoot and speed up and try to scare the pedestrian into running across!)

Massive amounts of money have been spent on installing cycling lanes. However, the latest idea is that cyclists should keep to the middle of the road where they are more visible.

So called smart motorways have resulted in more motorway accidents. I am not the only one wondering whether the new rules will bring the benefits being boasted about. The campaign to inform the public starts in mid February, although the rules have just been introduced now, at the end of January, January 29th 2022.

Esquina restaurant - Spanish for Corner - A Gourmet's Corner

Esquina restaurant in Singapore was a rare and welcome treat. I asked, 'What does Esquina mean?'

'It is Spanish for corner.'

As in cosy corner, I presumed. But when I went upstairs and looked out of windows in both directions, I realised that the restaurant was on the corner of the street. My husband grinned, 'It probably means both'.

After learning a word of Spanish from the restaurant name, we sat at the ground floor bar and were able to watch the busy chefs cooking and cutting the fish and vegetables and could ask them the occasional question.

Trevor at Esquina Spanish restaurant in Singapore. Seated at the downstairs bar, where you can watch the cooking. Photo by Angela Lansbury.

Drinks
We started with a glass of sparkling white Spanish Cava. Cava is the Spanish word for cave.

Next, a glass of red Sangria;

Later a tempranillo too, red from Toro.

Starters
I ate olives as starters.  Big green olives, larger than the ones we buy from the supermarket, with transparent caviar which looked like ice.

Main courses
Lamb and roast suckling pig.

Desserts at Esquina Spanish restaurant. Photo by Angela Lansbury.

Dessert
Lemon dessert.
Strawberries with green tea ice cream. The green tea ice cream was the highlight.
Angela liked the desserts at Esquina. Photo by Trevor Sharot.

We watched the blow torch burning the marshmallow.

Verdict
Excellent.

Where
Short walk from Otram MRT Station.

Layout
Bar stools at a long bar in front of the kitchen.
Small tables upstairs, with windows looking down on the street.

Conveniences

Ground floor unisex toilet with old mirrors and giant old wash basin.

Service/People
Friendly staff. The server from the Philippines chatted to us.

The busy chefs were happy to answer questions, like my husband's query, "Where do you buy those enormous carrots?"
Answer: "Cold Storage at Jellita has a big room of fruit and vegetables."
Ah, yes. I noticed that when I was there.

Sound Level
Background music, mostly Spanish.
