Boo-hoo - no bagel!

This is a bagel. Yes, most people know. A whole bagel has to have a hole. A bagel fills a hole in your tummy.

My family drove all around looking for the bagel house. Then asked a passer-by. It was in a black alcove down an alley. Could anybody find it? Yes. Long line-up, or as we Brits say, queue.

Park up. Walk back. Still a long queue. Now the Brits are famous for queuing for buses. We queue politely when we have no choice. However, stat doesn't mean all personality types are patient.

My man on a mission decided to go back another time and another day, not peak hour at the weekend.

When I finally get to taste their bagels I shall give you my verdict.

My husband says, it could go like bubble tea. Busy, busy for a year. Then gone. This year I am into bagels. Bagels have been around since before I was born.

Now, what's for lunch? To read more about bagels, and salt beef and B & K and drool over the photos, go back to my previous posts.

Bagels, bagels. bagels for adults and children.

Healthier - with avocado.

Cinnamon and raisin.

The classic, popular smoked salmon with cream cheese on a poppy seed bagel

Three types of vegan crea cheese

Rainbow bagel. You could do this with food colouring, but I would prefer to use fruit and vegetables to have a least a little flavouring.

Christmas bagels

Bagel bites. Indulge but save on calories - so long as you (don't wold down several but) say to yourself, one, two, that will do.

The Salmon with added watercress. Or cheese.

Muslim area of Jerusalem. I love the heart shape.

Scr

Scrambled egg for yellow and contrasting mushrooms.

Salt beef is served on rye bread in B & K, in Edgware and Hatch End, London UK. But beef on a bagel would work well.

Contrasting light and dark bagels. You can have white and brown savoury. Or vanilla and chocolate.

Sesame seeds scattered on bagels.

White fish on bagels in Iceland.

Bagel chips. to make them even crunchier, and worse for dieters - leaving more for the non dieters.

Egg yolk in the centre of the breakfast bagel. In the centre of the sandwich is the white meat of your choice, such as turkey 'ham', which you find in Muslim Malaysia, to satisfy the Christian customers and the Muslim Malay cooks.

Bagels were known in Poland and Ukraine back in the 1880s. Poland was a big place. Borders shifted around. So did people. A bagel was ring shaped bread which could be threaded on a string around your neck like a pendant, or sold by an itinerant vendor from a long pole or stick.

Bagels reached England. And the USA. In 1880s the assassination of a Russian leader led to a crackdown on Jews who took off west to safety or were forced out. They took with them their food.

Now bagels are everywhere as a fast food.

Singapore Bagels

In Singapore, my husband spotted Yiddish on the Bagel House sign. It is not run by Jews but by two enterprising Chinese lads. That reminds me of the joke about the Chinese waiter speaking Yiddish to the customers in a Jewish restaurant in the East End of London. Eventually a customer goes up to the restaurant manager to compliment him on the language skills of the staff. "Your Chinese waiter speaks excellent Yiddish." The restaurant manager replies, "Sh, don't tell him. He thinks he's speaking English."

I shall report on one of their bagels in my next post.

They abbreviate Lorong to Lor. Lorong is Malay for alley, lane, smallest road or way. (A Jalan is a bigger road.) Besar is big. Kecil is small.

New, Amusing Bagel Shop - Bagel House in Holland Village, Singapore

If you don't already know, Singapore already other branches of the two men bagel house. You now have a choice of Novena, and Tanjong Pagar and Holland Village

The website reads two men bagel house  (with no spaces). If you read it fast, you read t women bagel house!

They started with the idea of Hot dog House but changed to Two Men Bagel House. They aren't cheap but they are certainly different. You can pick up or get delivery.

I wrote on their amusing email sign up. They asked for a cool fact about you, an uncool fact and your biggest dream. They didn't say related to bagels but I thought that was what was wanted.

I wrote:

I write a blog on travel and food. travelwithangelalansbury.blogspot.com

'I'd like some funky facts. Can you do a bagel birthday cake? Or sell ring shape bagel cutters for cooks. Sell books on bagels. A tee-shirt, tee-towel, apron?

'Our family bagels are usually the classic smoked salmon and cream cheese - served with salad. I am on a diet and am only allowed one third of a bagel. My husband eats two thirds.

'Baby bagels for my calorie count. Or a bagel cut into four so I can eat a piece at every meal without putting on weight.'

See The World's Oldest & Newest Pyramids: Great Pyramid In Germany, 1993-3183! Started But Will Finish Later! Plus Pyramids in the USA, UK, Ireland and Worldwide

Where is it and what is it?

It is in Germany. A series of concrete blocks. The first was placed in 1993. The second in 2003. The third in 2013. The next will be in 2023. One is added every ten years. To be finished in years to come, not in our lifetime.

It will be completed in 3183. My grand-daughter was born this year, 2021. My grand-daughter's, grand-daughter might see it finished.

The cathedrals of old were started with a projected finishing date much later, often projected to finish a hundred years from the starting date.

Gothic Cathedrals
The Gothic cathedrals in the UK, France, Spain and Germany were arched and domed and elegant. They were under cover meeting places for ceremonies such as weddings and funerals. Their domes had contrasting colours of green or gold.

The Taj Mahal, India
The Taj Mahal is beautiful, inlaid with precious stones. It was a monument in memory of a woman who was buried there, and later her husband.

The Egyptian Pyramids
On the other hand, the great pyramids of Egypt were solid. Squat. Nothing to see from outside.
Pyramids of Giza

Stonehenge in the UK
Stonehenge had simple stones. But arranged in a circle.

Meaning
Stonehenge had a meaning. It caught the sun's rays.

The Egyptian pyramids had a purpose. They were mausoleums.

You can visit the German pyramid any time for free. Follow the directions on the website.

Records
I would prefer if each column in the German pyramid in each year listed major events. Good and bad events. For example, landing on the moon. Covid-19.

See next post on Wemding

Germany also has other ideas for pyramids.

Pyramid in Karlsruhe, Germany.

England has a pyramid mausoleum in Blickling Park, Norfolk, UK.

Ireland
Howard Mausoleum, centre of Kilbride Cemetery, near Arklow, County Wicklow, Ireland

Over in the USA there's a pyramid, Hunt's tomb, Phoenix, Arizona, USA.

I like this pyramid in the USA with a camel on top:

It's the Jolly Tomb. Very jolly. US Camel Corps.
Hi Jolly's life in the USA is described in the website below.

Others are in Poland and elsewhere.

How to identify and improve old holiday photos with colours and captions

Photoshop Elements Logo. Source Adobe. From Wikipedia.

Gosh - look what you can do with Photoshop

Entirely created artificially

Worth a look at what you can do. Practise on a photo of yourself taken today, something which is not old and original.

I increased the size of the picture and I just noticed the word craquelure. I looked it up on dictionary.com . Craquelure is a French word meaning fine cracks. Craqulure can be caused by the shrinking of varnish or paint.

Often when I was busy working I would think, I would label these photos if I had the time. Now that I am semi-retired and at home I have more time. And more photos. And technology has improved.

Colourizing Your Photos

Old photos can be improved, colourized, using artificial intelligence, or mechanical means. What is the difference between coloured and colourized? Colourized is a term we use to describe the artificially aided colouring done in our times, in recent times, now in the year I am writing, 2021. Years ago old black and white photos were deliberately coloured with a sepia wash to make black and white photos look warmer. I was surprised to learn this. I thought sepia was the effect of fading black colour. Apparently not.

Colourising Landscapes

What can the automatically added photo programs do? They work best on landscapes and mechanical objects, such as the old photos of railways and trains in countryside backgrounds. The automatic systems recognize that sky is blue, the contrast colour in sky is the white of clouds. Sea can be blue when reflecting sky or green when reflecting vegetation. Trains and mechanical objects can have a metallic shiny grey look. Wooden railway sleepers (the cross pieces supporting the shiny metal lines) and tree stumps and tree trunks can be brown.

Colouring Clothing

Simple workers' clothing can be coloured simply. A group of people dressed alike might have white tee-shirts or shirts and brown trousers, or navy for the navy.

When you come to people's clothing it gets more complicated. What about my photos of family weddings from 1910, in the back garden of the east end of London.

Laying On Layers

You could put the photo into Photoshop or a similar photo editing program. Start adding the colours in layers bit by bit. Each layer can be changed or removed if you don't like it without changing the original. S and see what is interesting and an improvement.

For example, blue sky. Green grass. Brown fence. Bride in white? Or cream? Groom in black? Or dark grey? One could read about other events in the period to confirm. If you were to give your great aunt a dress in blue instead of green who would know or care? You could even show two different colours so that your grandchildren can see the options are only possibilities.

Colour and Captions

If only the colours had been written in a caption! Even a date would help us identify styles of clothing from that era.

If you colour, or caption, others can build on your work, your research and efforts, your time. Or you might come back to the project a year later, starting one step ahead of when you began the project to enhance the photos.

Captioning Modern Photos

I am now looking at my own photos and thinking how much detail  I can add to captions. Maybe my son's wedding photo will be found years later, with parts torn off, or the colours faded. If I add, mother of the groom, Angela, wearing a blue Ann Balon dress and jacket, years later I, my family, or any other researcher will be able to identify the people in the picture, and trace the style of dress and its colours.
