Book Shape fountain with water illusion of turning pages, in Budapest

Red Fountain - Budapest, District 5, Egyetem Square. Hungary.

Pic by Globetrotter19 in Wikipedia.

Book fountain, Budapest, Hungary. in Egyetem Square, District 5.
The water jets create the illusion that the pages are turning.

Where is this wonderful fountain? In the heart of Europe. Hungary, the heart.

In the heart of the old city. The fountain is in Egyetem Square. hard to remember the name until you learn it means University square.

Then I looked up the translation of university in translate Google and found two options, university and academy. Think of the Greek letters c/g and y and d/t and y and although they don't exactly match in the right order that's enough of a reminder for the words university and academy and Egyetem to match.

My next way to remember it when typing was to break the word up into Eg (egg) yet- tem temporal.  Egg head, yes, time. the university is the university of law. How appropriate for the fountain to symbolise the lawyers turning the pages to find a law or precedent to win a case in court.

The building behind the fountain is an historic building with classical elements of arches (which to me look Roman) and columns (which to me look Roman or Greek).

This square is one of three nearby squares. Not a million miles from the river which divides Buda and Pest.

If this nvelty fountain intrigues and delights you: here's another novelty fountain:

Surrealist Art To See in New York And At Giorgio de Chirico House Museum, in Rome, Italy

Italian flag
(During 2020 due to covid19 many places are closed but you can do a lot of exploring and planning trips and research on the internet.)

The Giorgio de Chirico House Museum (Casa Museo di Giorgio de Chirico) is a house museum in the 16th century Palazzetto del Borgognoni at Piazza di Spagna 31 in Rome
De Chirico House Museum, Rome, Italy.

The house was acquired by Giorgio de Chirico in 1948. It was left to the state by his widow and opened as a museum in 1998. Only open by appointment, it is closed on Mondays and Sundays. The nearest Metro stop is Spagna.

The house has a large number of paintings as well as sculptures and you glimpse the rooftop terrace from which he used to look over the city.

It houses several works belonging to the Giorgio e Isa De Chirico Foundation, including:

Thought to be inspired by a tower in Turin, Italy.

Self-portrait by de Chirico in Munich, Germany

The artist was rather fond of tall towers, which are a feature of some towns in Italy. His words remind me of Delvaux.

Who Is On Your Time Zones And Can Join Your Online Meeting in the USA, UK, China, Singapore, Italy, Russia or Australia?

Braddell Heights Advanced on learncool.sg

China and Singapore
The whole of China is on one time zone, like Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong.

What about the rest of Asia?

Indonesia
Jakarta is one hour behind Singapore. (The sun sets earlier there.)

This suits Asia because they like their early morning markets, and climbing volcanoes, starting at dawn, to be at the top for the view or sunrise you have to be up there by 5.

So, if Braddell Heights Advanced Toastmasters club is holding online meetings from 7 pm to 9.30 pm that is 6 pm to 8.30 pm in Jakarta.

The USA and UK
I remember when I was a school children in the UK and Kennedy was killed in the afternoon, we watched the announcement with blank screen and mournful music in the UK in the evening.

USA
New York is in the Eastern time zone, five hours behind London, England.
New York is in the same time zone as Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Detroit, Miami, Orlando, Philadelphia, Toronto, and Washington DC.
Also Montreal and Ottawa and Quebec in Canada. Also Caracus.

Singapore
Looking at this chart I can see that my Singapore club meetings are on the same time zone as Perth in Australia, Shanghai in China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, the Philppines and Taiwan.

I can also work out that a blog written before midnight in Singapore in English is likely to be read by English speaking people in Perth and Shanghai, Malaysia and so on.

Rehearsing being a good loser - when online

Braddell Heights Advanced on learncool.sg

Nowadays those of us responsible for organizing events have to be careful to keep up the morale of contestants, whether they win or lose.

We need a set of ten commandments for contestants in speech contests.
Each contestant must rehearse saying something positive in the interview whilst waiting. eg 'I did my best'. or, I made some mistakes but I have learned so I will do even better next time. The other contestants were great, just having them competing kept me on my toes.'

On winning the winner should have rehearsed a speech to the others, maybe: You had a great prop, I loved your line, ...'

The runner ups and not place should have a rehearsed speech for the winner.

All the runners up and not placed speakers will have somebody who thinks they should have won. That is why you have five or more judges.

At the Braddell Heights meeting online, 29 April, 2020, I was able to speak to the winner of the Division S contest, Eliya, who I have known for some time. He was at the Braddell Heights Advanced meeting before the contest as well as the meeting afterwards.

After the Area S Division contest the previous Saturday, one contestant told everybody she felt she had failed, even before the results were announced.

Her anxiety before hearing the results reminded me of two cases where students had committed suicide before hearing their A level results. If only they had waited a day, they would have discovered they had succeeded.

Exams, students. Adults at Speakers' conferences must be more resilient. Hm I heard that a new member of one of the clubs I visit regularly in London had committed suicide. In early 2020. No warning signs

So, a few weeks later, I did not feel i could just shrug when I did hear warning signs.

It was not the failure, but the fear of failure, which tormented them.

But even if you do fail to reach first place, logically if one person is first out of 10, 9 out of the ten contestants must be disappointed.

I related the story at the meeting of the film I had seen about the finals in the USA.

I asked first place winner Eliya how he felt about winning and losing.

He said he recalled a previous head of Division S advising, "Enjoy the journey. If you are not enjoying it, no point doing it."

He said, "It's the journey, not the destination."

We often hear two sayings:

It is not failure. it is a learning experience.

The other is the popular saying attributed to Edison, the inventor whose persistence benefits us all today with light bulbs.

His saying was, "I have not failed 1000 times. I have found out 1000 ways of not doing it.'

So that is the moral.

Next time I shall rehearse everybody reacting to good and bad news and rehearsing their pre-results chat.

While we are online - free voting systems and free polls

I went to one of the system offering polls and found that they used under license the system of mentimeter and Facebook and other systems.

The free version allowed only two questions per meeting.

Let's take as an example, a toastmasters meeting where you have eight speakers in the first half,  four more speakers in the second half and then four impromptu speakers.

Under the only two uses per meeting system, you could not vote for the speakers separately.

You either need to make the event like two events, with two different people having accounts. Or you list the sixteen speakers in one poll or vote and tell everybody to choose one form the first six and one from the second six. I had seen this done and found it confusing. I also wondered why they didn't hold the vote immediately after the first set of speakers.

I thought that the event y had forgotten to do the poll. Or that they were delayed becaue they wanted to confirm the names of the speakers and correct spelling of the names.

However, on reading the terms and onditions of the polling system, I wondered whether it was the system which was the caseu of the delay.

A different siutation occurs when you are organizing a one off event such as an end of year party or fund riasing event, or Annual General Meeting. You might not want to commit funds, even if your organization has funds, to payment every month for a service you will only use once a year and maybe never again.

At this point, you are best off finding a company which already has a subscription, or which is willing to take out a subscription, to allow you to use, or to appoint their member to use the system on that occasion, using whatever login or password is needed.
