How To Organise a Halloween Celebration And Cut A Pumpkin

Last Year's Halloween - Pumpkins for the house of garden, in the home or garden section of a supermarket such as Waitrose.

Clothes and accessories under £2.

Biscuits and cakes under £2.

This year's Halloween
My Tesco Trident, £2 or less.
Plastic trident from Tesco Express

Problem
How do I buy and cut a pumpkin to make a display? What do I need?

Answer
You have a choice. Buy a fresh pumpkin and enjoy eating it as well as having a display. Or buy a plastic pumpkin, ready-made, and store it for next year.

Where to buy? In the UK I saw fresh pumpkins in Waitrose, synthetic 'toy' pumpkins in Tesco Express.

You can buy a pumpkin cutting kit with instructions.

Cutting A Pumpkin
My friend says:
Slice the top off the pumpkin horizontally.

Scoop out the inside.

Draw the face on a sheet of paper. Either draw it yourself or copy from a picture on the internet or from the packaging with your pumpkin. Decide whether to use circles or triangles, small or large, what distance apart. Trace or copy onto the outside of the pumpkin with pencil, so you can work out the spacing and decide what looks best.
Cut three triangles, two for the eyes

Use it to eat fresh, make a pumpkin drink or heat it up as a soup. Recipes all over the internet. You can also make a pumpkin tart.

Set up outdoors by the gate or doorway, on the ground or perhaps on a small table to welcome guests.  This can be done at a home or public meeting. (We did it at a Toastmasters International Speakers' Club in London, at a church hall beside a cemetery!

Place a tea light inside. After everybody has arrived and the meeting is about to start, extinguish the light for safety when moving. Carry the pumpkin indoors. Set it up and re-light the candle.

If you are really crafty in the kitchen, bake a Halloween cake. Orange icing. A black witches' hat on top.  If not, go to an organized event.
Bake a cake. Instructions on craft site.

Story - Memories of Pumpkin Dinner
I had a delicious pumpkin meal at the American Club in Singapore. I was a member of the American Women's Association. We had pumpkin soup as a starter, a main course with pumpkin mixed in with the salad, and a choice of a pumpkin 'pudding', meaning a kind of mousse, or pumpkin tart.

To complete the look: orange paper napkins and an orange centrepiece.

Offer leftover fresh pumpkin display to somebody who has children. Save a plastic pumpkin for next year in your basement or attic. Note where it is stored by sending yourself a picture in an email in the storage place in your laptop or phone or computer. Copy details of where to find it into your online diary for a week before next year's Halloween. Send duplicate to spouse or other family member, or to shared calendar, so they don't waste money by duplicating purchases. You are also set for your next event.

If you missed having a Halloween party this year, prices come down in supermarkets the day or week afterwards. You can stock up with paperwear for next year.

What can you buy?
Paper cups.
A plastic tablecloth.
Plastic pumpkins.
Orange decorations and clothes.
Face paints. Masks. Fingernails.
Note any Halloween stories to tell.
Halloween Tablecloth
Lessons Learned
The organizers of our party were brilliant. The Toastmaster of the evening wore an outfit. One person brought cakes. Another brought decorations. What else could we have done? Phoned each member personally the weekend before and on the day and asked them to wear either fancy dress or black and white and orange.

Food and Fruit
The halloween cakes looked great.

Our cakes and biscuits were an overdose of sugar. We could have brought orange fruit as an alternative for those on health food diets. That's easy. Oranges, ideally slices or in segments. Oranges. Satsumas. Mandarins. Apricots.

White hard boiled eggs on orange plates, or white plates with orange napkins alongside or under the plates.

Peanuts or black fruits such as black grapes or raisins in white bowls on orange paper napkins.

Invitations
Halloween invitations asking guests to wear outfits or white tee-shirts or orange ties and jewellery.

Where to see Fireworks? Buy indoor fireworks? Warning about Hotel Fire alarms, holiday homes and second homes

Problem
People set off fireworks on New Year's Even Where can I light the fireworks? Who set off the fire alarm?

Fireworks.

Answers
In the UK fireworks are lit on October 31 for Halloween, in London.

Fireworks will appear again on November 5th, for Guy Fawkes Night. You can see public displays when driving your car or from a balcony outside your bedroom if you have a view over the city or the sea where there is a public display.

Fee or Free
Public displays usually charge a fee. But from nearby or overlooking from a distance you will see them for free. Drive around a day earlier to plan your route in and out, noting side roads and making a map highlighting alternatives to speed your car through traffic jams on the day or night.

Also note any late night fast food restaurants in case you want to have a late night snack. Alternatively pack water and a picnic. Also note toilets.

Do not light fireworks near cars. When filling your car with petrol during the day before, wipe any drips off the outside of your car.

Park on the edge of the car park for a quick exit. You may want to leave at midnight or shortly after and find yourself boxed in or stuck in a queue. If a warden tries to direct you to a middle space, ask politely if they can allocate you a space for a quick exit because your child / family is tired and might leave early.

New Year's Eve, Prague
One year in Prague we went to a free display where you parked in a large field or paved car park. When other people started lighting fireworks amidst the cars I grew alarmed.

Sparks were too near our car and everybody else's. "Where are the engine and petrol cap in that car? Back or front?" I asked. "People are lighting fireworks all around."

"You worry too much," my husband said. Two minutes later he agreed, "I don't like this. Too many fireworks, near too many cars."

"What if somebody lights a spark near somebody else's box of fireworks and starts a fire beside a car? Or the box of fireworks inside their car?"

We were boxed in. We had to ask somebody to move back a bit so we could manoeuvre out. We drove off.

Indoor Fireworks In Florida
New Year's Eve in Florida. We looked at some of the public displays. We decided they were beyond our budget, especially as our small sun was likely to fall asleep before the start time.

So instead we bought handheld fireworks, sparklers. Much cheaper, and we could choose a time to suit our own schedule, and place. Where? When?

Wait until it was dark, or just turn the lights out at twilight? Not in a car. Not near cars.

Maybe draw the curtains in a hotel room.  We were staying in a hotel in Florida.

The packet says indoor fireworks. So they must be safe indoors. We had often had indoor fireworks in the UK, in the days before we had a fire alarm.

So in Florida, we thought, how about on the balcony?

The wind was blowing them out. Wind and fireworks was not a good combination.

No Fireworks Indoors
How about inside?  Not near the curtains. For safety in the bathroom, near water, no fire alarm there.

Oops. Fire alarm. That interrupted us. Interrupted a wedding. I wonder who set off the fire alarm?

A member of staff appears to check. Their warning system has shown a fire - on our floor! Oh, dear, was it us?

Maybe not. It could have been somebody else smoking.  But better not to light fireworks in the hotel again.

Manchester's free museums, discount Denbyware and Manchester United Statues and Stadium Tours

Problem
What to do in Manchester?

Answer
Manchester, England, has the most wonderful museums, free museums. What do I say Manchester, England. Because there must be one in the USA. I just checked on Wikitravel. There are twenty-three in America.

What are the free museums?
Lowry. (The painter of those wonderful hordes of matchstick men, all marching to and fro.) I remember staring at the recreation of his living room with horror. A caption said that one of his visitors recalled sitting on a chair which had the springs pushing though a hole.

Manchester Art Gallery
So many famous paintings. Pre-Raphaelites.

Discounts and Denbyware
A small discount outlet mall sells brands such as Marks and Spencer and Denbyware. You can also look online for the Denbyware. Postage is costly, but if you are driving that way you might consider buying something online and picking it up during a trip.

Manchester United
For Manchester United fans it may be worthwhile to book and pay for a tour of the football stadium, Old Trafford. What is there to see, apart from trophies? Even if you are not a football enthusiast, it's interesting to learn how they keep the grass growing all year, in February and March using heaters.

It's free to look at the statues outside of three football player icons. George Best, who was once in a bit of a dispute with a girlfriend. The other two are Bobby Charlton and Denis Law. The statues are nicknamed the holy trinity.

George Best said, "I spent a lot of money on booze, birds [women] and fast cars – the rest I just squandered".

He was born in Belfast and they have a mural showing his in action on the football field. Belfast's airport was renamed after him.

Manchester United is an industry. The team has followers all over the world. Ireland. Texas. I would get into a taxi in Singapore and the driver would often ask, "What football team do you support?"

I used to say Manchester United, because I have supported them ever since the 1958 air crash. It used to amuse me that Singaporeans,, living so far away, were so keen on selecting a team from Britain to support. I don't think anybody in England would support a Singaporean football team.

I looked online for the Manchester stadium tour tickets and found that you could buy them as a gift. What a great idea, when you don't know what to buy somebody but know they are a football supporter.

The World's Longest Pier - A Day Trip From London to Westcliff-on-Sea, Southend, Essex

Southend Pier. Photo courtesy of Romazur in Wikipedia.

Problem
Where do you take the seniors for a fun day out? What do they enjoy?

Answer
Yesterday an animated white-haired lady, let's call her Maggie, told me how much she enjoyed a day out at Westcliff. Actually, I overheard her telling her cousin, "It's got the most wonderful pier!" So I joined in and asked where it was. Westcliff is a suburb of Southend. It's on the Thames estuary.

She told me:

Westcliff, has a wonderful pier - it's the world's longest pier! It was a long walk to the end, and then back. But we stopped to see the lifeboat museum.

"You can take a train along the pier. The lifeboat crew can take the train. When it's not running, they have a vehicle so they can get to the end fast. Some of them sleep at the end of the pier overnight, when they're on call.

"It's the most convenient seaside from London because you don't have to cross London to get to it."

The cliff has a funicular and a lift, but she is dismissive of it.

"It's not a proper cliff by the sea, like Bournemouth."

Westcliff has a large Jewish population and is nicknamed Jerusalem on sea. The pier in 1.2 miles, 2 kilometers. The train takes just under an hour. The road is the M25 which circles London and then the A13. (How do you remember the number? Think of what the bingo callers would say. Number 13,  unlucky for some.) The roads in the UK and A roads, or big important roads, faster and wider than the B roads which are like B movies, sneered at by drivers who want to go fast and direct. Then the A road were overtaken in status by motorways.

Train tickets are cheaper if you buy a discount card of which there are more than a dozen, for example young people old people, two together, groups, family, armed forces. With senior rail ticket, for one journey, the cost of the ticket amounted to the saving on the first journey. If you were only taking one journey, was it worth the time and effort? We decided it was, because then you already had it if you ever wanted to take another journey.

Frank Talk On Jewish Funerals, Finding Ancestors' Graves, Amy Winehouse and Alma Cogan

Problem
I am invited to a Jewish funeral. What do I wear? What do I say? What do I write? What will happen?

Answers
Apparently, most of the world's Jews are in the USA and most of them are not orthodox. However, if you are one of the non-Orthodox majority, or married into the faith, or are a neighbour or friend or colleague, you might be glad to have some idea of what to expect.

Invitations
Technically you aren't invited to a funeral. You are merely informed that it will take place and then it's up to you whether you will attend.

This year, for the first time, October 2017, we received notification of a friend's mother's funeral by mobile phone in a text message.

It helps to let the organizers know if you are attending. Then they can organize cars and catering.

What Do I Wear? Black?
I went to one shiva wearing black leather trousers and was told I should not be wearing trousers nor leather.

I went to a funeral wearing all black and everyone else was wearing colours. Strangers came up to me and expressed condolences thinking I was the widow.

I therefore wore dark green with an orange scarf and multi-colour jacket this time. When we drove in I saw that all the people, from three separate funeral, men and women, were all in black. Luckily I was wearing a reversible jacket, so I was able to turn it inside out ante cover the oranges scarf and the black hood covered my hat. I should have put my black hat in my bag, just in case.

Stones on a gravestone in a Jewish cemetery. Photo by Angela Lansbury. Copyright.

I am trying to remember the grave from Schindler's list. I remember the long line of people putting a stone on the grave, which tells the living that you have visited.

Shoes
I had known to wear black shoes in case they got muddy. I wanted to wear boots. I didn't have anything suitable. Wellington boots, white plastic with a red St George's cross, whilst ideal for many occasions such as camping, did not seem suitable for a Jewish funeral. People were dressed very smartly, as if for a wedding - but black, as if for a wedding of somebody dead.

Wear walking shoes. Cemeteries can be huge. It was a 15 minute walk to the grave, then back again. No wonder I saw benches by two graves. There's not enough room between most of the gravestones for a bench.

A Minyan
You are supposed to have a minyan, a quorum, a minimum of ten males to say the ritual prayers at a funeral, therefore a Jewish male who was not expecting to go to the funeral might be asked along at the last minute to make up numbers.

Why does this shortage occur? Because even if you have twenty people, the women don't count. The death might occur unexpectedly and a Jewish funeral will be arranged within 48 hours (not on a Sabbath) so people might not have time to travel from overseas. If the person is old, all their contemporaries, their friends, might already be dead. Some of the males are not Jewish and therefore can't be counted in the minimum, because that is the rule and for the sensible reason that they won't know enough Hebrew to say prayers and generally help and support.

Timing of Funeral Ceremony
Arrive in advance. Funerals are short and strictly timed. The staff are busy running people to the grave and back on electric carts. You cannot have delays. You will miss your funeral and end up at somebody else's. You need to arrive before the end and stay to the end of the prayers after the burial, because the location of any tea is announced at the end.

The Cemetery
Put the location of the cemetery in your satnav. Chestnut, in North London, is very confusing because there are two cemeteries, one orthodox and one less Orthodox. At one funeral we went to at least two cars of people were delayed by going to the wrong cemetery.

You might want to visit a grandparent's or ancestor's grave whilst you are at a cemetery. It's handy to keep in your diary the names of ancestors and famous people and where they are buried. I was able to see a photograph of a gravestone when I typed a name on a board in the cemetery forecourt. I now have records of two ancestors in a cemetery. If I had thought about it, I could have typed in Alma Cogan's name and photographed her grave, or a picture of it on the board.

Name Board
Park your car and walk to the front of the prayer hall. There may be more than one funeral. A board outside states the name of the person who is about to be buried. If you arrive earlier you see another name. Yes, you are in the right place. you just have to wait for your family's name to appear and not go up and join the wrong group. You may have two or even three sets of people, all in black.

If in doubt, look for a rabbi, and ask him which funeral. Or a cemetery official.

FINDING YOUR ANCESTOR'S GRAVE

Cemeteries have gone high tec. This is wonderful. You can type in your ancestor's name and up comes the date of burial of everybody with the same surname, the section and the row.

In the prayer hall
The women stand on the right, then men on the left.

Prayers and Prayer Book
The Prayer book is in both Hebrew and English.

Hand Washing
You wash your hands afterwards. A sign reminds you to wash your hands after the burial before re-entering the hall and picking up the prayer book for the post funeral prayers.

Orthodox people will probably be praying as part of the hand washing ritual which is done, as Queen Elizabeth first said about her annual bath -'whether I need it or not".

This seems sensible, if you are touching the earth to throw it into the grave. But it is supposed to be ritually cleansing, in effect symbolically washing away the misery of the mourning and enabling you to start afresh washing away the depression and starting life again with hope.

The House and Chairs
1 The mourners, the immediate family, sit grouped together, traditionally on low chairs to be closer to the earth. This is handy, so you can line up after the prayers, and find them during the evening.

2 You greet and comfort each one, and say the traditional greeting, "Wish you long life!"

In my opinion this is a very sensible thing to say, because some mourners will feel quite despondent, even suicidal, so it helps, rather than saying negative things to say something positive and future orientated.

The Mirrors
Mirrors are covered.
Covered mirror in the downstairs cloakroom. Photo by Angela Lansbury.

Prayers / Shiva
Prayers are said in the evening. This could take place for one night, two or three nights, for the benefit of those who were unable to attend earlier, or all seven nights, as is a tradition, to enable more people to arrive and give the mourners more people to offer comfort and distraction. If you can't make the funeral, ask about the Shiva. Shiva means seven, the seven nights of mourning, 'sitting shiva' - sitting mourning and receiving guests for seven evenings.

Food and drink
You are likely to be offered tiny shots of kosher alcohol and alternative non-alcoholic drinks.

Amy Winehouse
Amy Winehouse, the singer, 14 Sept 1983-23 July 2011. Confusingly her funeral was held at Edgewarebury Lane Cemetery but she was cremated at Golder's Green Crematorium. Her gravestone is in Bushey Jewish Cemetery where her name is added to the tombstone of another relative, I presume her grandmother. Her songs included Back To Black. She was given a place in Madame Tussaud's, Baker Street, London. Her statue is in Stables Market, Camden Town, London.

Amy Winehouse. Madame Tussaud's, Baker Street, London, England. Photo by Wolfgang Kopp in Wikipedia.

Alma Cogan
Alma Cogan, singer, May 19 1932-Oct 26 1966 is buried in Bushey Cemetery. Alma Cogan, known as the girl with the giggle in her voice, was a friend of the Beatles. Her songs included Don't Do A Tango With An Eskimo. She died of throat cancer.

See Ireland In A Week With Five Drinks, Waterford glass and Limericks

Map of Ireland from Wikitravel.

Ireland is known as the land of saints and scholars, and called the emerald isle.

Problem
From Guinness to Galway. Where to go, what to do, how much can I do?

Answer
I and three friends have been to Ireland. Here's a one week tour:

Ferry
Drive to Liverpool and catch the ferry to Ireland. Which one?

The eight-hour ferry is cheaper and my friends chose that. But now my friends say next time they'll pay the extra for the shorter crossing about two and a half to three hours. My husband went to Ireland on business by ferry and was in a violent storm and was violently sick and instead of taking the ferry back insisted on flying home.

Guinness In Dublin
First stop is Dublin's Guinness Museum.
It's world famous. Even if you don't drink Guinness, take a tour. (Spell it with double n and double s.) What else is the family famous for? Guinness Book of Records.

Jameson Whiskey in Dublin
From beer to whisky, no, Irish whiskey, spelled with an e. Jameson's. They have one branch in Dublin, another is County Cork. Take a tour of James's whiskey factory. You get a certificate to prove you have done it. My friend hangs his framed in the downstairs cloakroom.
A certificate from Jameson. Photo by Angela Lansbury.

If Whiskey is too strong for you, go off for lunch and finish with Irish coffee or a Baileys Irish cream. Unfortunately, there's no tour for lovers of Baileys

.Irish coffee. Picture from Wiipedia.

Waterford
Tour the Waterford glass factory. You might be able to buy a glass for your whiskey.

Clonmel
Are you tired of touring? A fine four-star hotel, with a swimming pool and spa, (not cheap), might be your base.

Apple Cider

Apple Juice
"A small company showed us how they make their juice. Everything is thrown in and pressed. Out comes a cloudy apple juice.

Tipperary
You will recall the wartime song, It's a long way to Tipperary.

If you can't sing, you might hope to get the gift of the gab. For that yo go to Blarney Castle. If you are brave, you lean backwards over the parapet, with somebody holding your legs, and kiss the stone which is above you.

One friend said, "Noo, Thank you." He claimed, "I've already done it before."

I also declined. I don't think my insurance covers it. Think of all the bad things which could happen to the man holding my legs. He might get stung by a bee. Or struck by lightning.

Limerick
You have to send home a postcard or email with a poem about limerick, a limerick, don't you! You can have plenty of fun in a pub writing a limerick with the help of friends or even strangers who will soon become friends. You need only one word to rhyme with Limerick in the second line. The word Limerick can go at the end of the first and last lines. Any rhyme will do for the third and fourth lines.

There once was a tourist in Limerick
Who caught a bus from town real quick
Never alone, didn't want to go home
Because he had kissed the Blarney stone
On a side trip to Limerick.
By Angela Lansbury.

I have several rhyming dictionaries at home. The internet will do the same trick. After I looked up the potential rhymes for the word Limerick on the internet I found several more ideas, such as the word lovesick.

I'll improve on my first limerick:

A lovesick tourist in Limerick
Caught a bus to the town, real quick
After he kissed the Blarney stone
He was never alone, didn't want to go home
From the lovely girls in Limerick.

How about this:
I went as a tourist to Limerick
I ate so much good food that I was sick
The hotel called me a doctor quick
Ever so helpful, he was a brick
They're lovely and friendly in Limerick.
By Angela Lansbury. Copyright.

If you want to write a limerick, words which rhyme are:
airsick, Alnwick, antic, ballistic, bedtick, Berwick, boychick, brick, candlewick, cherrypick, click, Dick, drumstick, flick, knick, lick, lovesick, Mick, Nick, nonstick, pick, prick, quick rick, Rick, sic, sick, shtick, slapstick, slick, spick, stick, tick, tic, trick, thick, unpick, unstick, Warwick, wick, yardstick.

Belfast and The North
If you have more than a week and want to tour the whole of Ireland, the top of my must-see list is the award-winningTitanic Museum, Belfast. The north also has the Giants' Causeway and The Game Of Thrones tours.

Travel statistics: How many tourists travel each year and where to?

Problem
How many people travel? Which are the most popular places? I've always wondered.

Answer
"Europe’s tourism industry employs 12 million people and generates over five percent of GDP. Europe is the world's number one tourist destination. By 2030 we can expect 800 million visitors every year. " So said, Karmenu Vella, European Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fish.
"But what we need is a forward-looking vision: rather than the world's ‘No.1 travel destination’, we should aspire to becoming the world's top ‘Eco-travel destination’.” A new toolkit providing smart tips for greening the hospitality sector, takeagreenstep.eu, has just been launched. The website shows hotel and restaurant owners and managers how they can improve the environmental performance of their businesses.
Hotels Helping The Environment
So we have two stories. The first is about what hotels can do to help the environment. For example, the Rafael Hotel, in London, England, is designed to use natural lighting and use rainwater. They have a policy of no plastic. Drinking water is supplied to guests in glass bottles instead of plastic bottles. The toiletries in the bathrooms attached to bedrooms have soap in wall dispensers instead of the small plastic bottles. To keep the customers happy, they upgrade the quality of the gel, which has an organic, environmentally friendly source.

Doesn't this deter customers? Apparently not. The hotel seems pretty busy, to go buy the bookings announced on the websites such as booking.com and Tripadvisor which give minute by minute updates. "This hotel has been booked XX times in the last 24 hours. XX rooms left."

The other story is the number of us who go travelling.

Let's make numbers clear and simple to understand.

Europe is the world's number one tourist destination. More than the Americas or Asia.
The European tourism industry employs 12 million people.

Who says Europe s number one? The UN. They also have tables of the most visited countries in each continent.

I was surprised that France ranks so high, above the USA.

A surprise from another table is that the small island of Macau, with its casino. gets more visitors than India. Now I know why the World Travel Market, held annually in the UK at ExCel in East London, has such a large number of stands for cities and regions of France, states in the USA, and regions of Spain, China, Italy and the UK.

GDP is gross domestic product, an American term for the market worth of the production of a country in a year.

Wikipedia's useful information gets better and better. Just what I wanted to know. The tables are taken from the UN. But because I found them on Wikipedia I knew it was more likely that I would find material which was copyright free so I could reproduce it and show it to you.

Hotel Rafael, London, England
Hotel Rafael is a newish hotel, upmarket. Prices on booking.com started at £159. On Tripadvisor they had a room at £109.

The Rafael is not like Holiday Inn, which was originally designed as the answer to unpredictable Mom and Pop hotels; instead Holiday Inn had identical rooms throughout the hotel and the world, so the customer can know exactly what they were getting.

No, in Hotel Rafael the rooms vary in size and therefore in price. You pay much more for a suite with a Jacuzzi. The hotel has a spa and two restaurants. It employs some, not all, of those 12 million people in the tourism industry.
