Tips On The Challenges And Choices When Teaching English As A Foreign Language\; Beatles sites in the USA and UK

UK flag.

The words of many English language songs sound like nonsense, especially written by songwriters who are on ..., er, whatever.

Singapore flag.

I was teaching English as a foreign language to Chinese and other students in Singapore. I thought I would make homework more fun by allowing the pupils to transcribe the words of songs.

One girl brought in, 'We all live in a yellow submarine.'

Yellow Submarine by The Beatles.

She asked, 'What does this mean?'

I explained, 'Yellow is one of the colours of the rainbow. Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet. Um, nobody uses indigo any more. It would be more useful to learn brown and black and grey.'

They looked at me suspiciously. 'Yellow - submarine?'

'A submarine is like a ship, but under water. In wartime they can hide.'

'So why is it yellow?'

'Um - has everybody translated submarine?'

They translated submarine into Chinese, Malay, Indonesian, Hokkien.

'Please miss. Is this word likely to come up in our exams?'

Maybe not.

My postgraduate student in her twenties was interested. My other pupils regarded me warily as if I were some lunatic waiting to be certified.

I received puzzled looks and incredulity. I explained, brightly, 'It was written by one of the Beatles. What is your problem?'

A pupil responded suspiciously, 'I thought you told us the Beatles lived in Liverpool'.

Now, things are easier.

The internet answers every question.

The yellow submarine was apparently originally written as a nonsense children's song about colours, with bath time sounds. It was a huge hit.

Strawberry Fields Forever was about a place called Strawberry Fields in Liverpool, where you can follow a Beatles trail and see famous places such as the Cavern where the Beatles played.

The Beatles were as popular in the USA as they were in the UK. John Lennon was killed in the USA.

US flag.

A memorial to him is Strawberry Fields in Central Park.

Two other ideas for teachers:
Ask pupils to research tourist sites connected with famous singers or other characters.
Ask pupils to research making a national flag cake, and the terms using in cooking.
For a show and tell session:
Ask pupils to bring in records or books or other memorabiliia featuring their favourite singers and authors and other characters.
Ask pupils to bring in foods from the USA or UK and translate the ingredients (which are often listed in multi-languages on the packs.

You can visit Lennon's Strawberry Fields in Liverpool, Loverpool, and New York

Strawberry Fields

UK flag

The well known song title, 'Strawberry Fields forever', from the Sixties, 1967 to be precise, has come true not just as a forever memory in the mind of the songwriter but in September 2019 as a new tourist attraction which everybody can visit and remember. Strawberry Fields is in Liverpool, the garden of a home which was run by the Salvation Army and where John stayed as a child which inspired fond memories and the song.

English: Strawberry field gate

AuthorLander777 at English Wikipedia

Add it to the list of places to visit in the city of Liverpool connected with the Beatles.

Here is my tourist day out photo hit list:

Liverpool Beatles Sites
The Cavern Club and the street.
The statue of the Beatles.
Strawberry Fields. Free field, 12.95 pounds sterling exhibition on the Beatles and Salvation Army.
Photo ops - by the red gates into Strawberry Fields; by the street sign Penny Lane, the statues.

In the UK you can visit places associated with the Beatles in London, such as Abbey Road, home of the recording studio and the crossing featured in a photo of the Beatles crossing the road, used in an album cover, inspiring other photos.

We drove from London to Liverpool by private car. You can take the train from Euston station. Tours go from Euston station to Liverpool and back

Lennon visited the USA where he lived and died.

Flag of the USA

USA
In the USA in New York an area of Central Park honours John Lennon who wrote the song about his childhood home. Lenon was killed in the USA.

See the plaque on the ground with the word Imagine and read in Wikipedia about the man who used to visit every day and give a quick recitation on the life of Lennon.

Kazakhstan
In addition, the real surprise tourist attraction is the statues of the Beatles in .Kazakhstan..Quite a striking ensemble on and behind a park bench. One figure is seated playing the guitar. Another with arms folded, contrasting with another arms akimbo. I presume you can take a selfie sitting on the bench between the figures.

What else can you see in the city? Another well known statue in the largest city and former capital is the golden man on top of a column. Kazakhstan is the largest and wealthiest of the stans of Former Russian. Huge areas, and cold (there's skiing), a vast area to gallop along the silk road in winter, hence the reliance on horsemeat and horse sausages as luxury winter foods.

Kazakhstan has borders with Russia, china and other countries. Russian is widely spoken. The Beatles statue is in Green Field.

Wikivoyage warns that you should not mention Borat. Despite the fact that the successful film resulted in an increase in tourism to Kazakhstan.

Musicians' statues and Murals: Black Sabbath; Hendrix; Winehouse - More Listings

The world has many museums, murals and statues honouring musicians. Here are some of my favourites:

Statue of Ronnie James Dio of band Black Sabbath, at Kavarna in Bulgaria. Photo author unknown, from Wikipedia.

BULGARIA
At Kavarna on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, in the central park, see the statue of Ronnie James Dio, the frontman (singer) of the band Black Sabbath, replacing Ozzy Osborne. His songs included Love Potion Number 9. He performed here at Kavarna and campaigned for the release of imprisoned Bulgarian nurses.
This statue is the first of a planned Alley of Rock in the park.

Statue of Philip Lynott in Dublin, Ireland. Photo author type17 in Wikipedia.

IRELAND
Dublin
Statue of Phil Lynott, frontman of Thin Lizzie rock band. Statue outside Bruxelles Metal Club, on Harry Street, Dublin, Ireland.

Statue of Chopin in Warsaw. Photo by Tomasz Gozdziewicz in Wikipedia.

POLAND
Chopin, giant statue in park, passed by tour buses.
Hard to photograph. You have to be at a distance to get in the whole thing, but you need to run close up to photograph the plaque. Tour bus guides and drivers don't want to stop because it is half an hour, by the time everybody has spent ten minutes racing up to the statue, ten minutes lining up for selfies, then ten minutes running back.

See Changi Airport's Amazing Terminals - and 5 on video

Goodbye sign at Heathrow Airport, London, England, in 2018. Photo by Angela Lansbury.

Problem
How do you persuade other airports such as Heathrow to upgrade to the standard of Changi?

Answers
What's New And Welcome In Heathrow?
Heathrow has improved enormously. You drive in to depart and arrive to a sculpture of a globe and planes. You can see the new terminal buildings going up.

Delight's of the Departure Terminal at Heathrow
The pedestrian entrance is a building in front of a building with walkways, high security, very draughty, travel with a woolly hat in winter. Along the moving travelling walkways you pass pictures of the airport through the ages, with pictures of HM The Queen - Queen Elizabeth II, Marilyn Monroe and The Beatles.

Fish pond at Changi airport, in departure, Singapore.

Changi's Arrival Terminal
But it's nothing like the excitement of Changi airport, full of trees and flowers and seasonal displays. Plus the Butterfly Garden - allow time to find it.

From jewelchangiairport.com in article on Jewel Changi airport, in Wikipedia.

If you have already made plans for this year's travel, note down Singapore for 2019. The Jewel Changi Airport should be ready for you to visit by mid 2019.

Changi's New Terminal Five Approaching
What's really impressive is the plans for Changi's terminal 5. You pass it on your way into Singapore from Changi airport, which out Disney's Disney with Singapore's palm trees and water features within the terminals. As you drive away from the airport and into the city you admire the colourful flowering plants festooning the bridges.

Terminal Five Inside
A wonderful video from In The Know By AOL popped up in Facebook. The video shows how the new terminal seems to echo the scale and harmony of Singapore's stunning attracting Gardens By The Bay.
1 A giant waterfall several storeys high - will be the world's largest indoor waterfall.
2 A pedestrian walkway overhead.
3 A mirror maze in a garden.

You can read more in the article on Jewel Changi Airport in Wikipedia. You will be able to see the connection with architect Safdie.

PS
What's it all about? I remember that passengers were asked to send in suggestions for terminal improvement before the last terminal was built. The new one will be bigger than all the others combined. Singapore wants passengers on the lucrative London to Sydney route. Rival stopovers are KL and Thailand. Thailand and Malaysia are bigger countries with more cities and attractions so Singapore must compete with better attractions and a better terminal. Another factor is that air traffic including cargo routes have to increase capacity and modernity to offset any dwindling in shipping routes. Thailand, according to the talk, has been considering cutting horizontally across with a canal. Whether or not any one factor reduces revenue or fails to increase it, Singapore, as ever aims to combine the best of technology with comfort and entertainment.

Milan
Book online at La Scala opera house, Milan. We booked cheaper seats in a box at the top and side still very expensive, in my view. If you are a family and have the whole box, you can take turns sitting at the front and looking over. I was very disappointed. In the first half most of the time the singers were on one side of the stage below.

We had cheaper seats sitting at the back and we saw nothing. Why? Apparently boxes were designed like that so patrons could be behind curtains and secluded for a evening out with who knows who.

In the interval we complained. I would have wanted my money back. The box office said we should have told them earlier that we could not see. They moved us and put us down in the more expensive stall seats, in a back row, for the second half, which was much better.

Other music centres include Cannara.

I visited the house of the composer Puccini. A statue of him shows him smoking. He died of cancer.

Romania
We drove from the capital of Romania, Bucharest, to the second largest city, Brasov, to join a walking group. Near Sinai I saw a sign to the home of Romanian composer, George Enescu. It was late in the day and the place was closed but we and many other tourists gathered around the gate taking photos of the picturesque house in the woods. He designed this house himself, with the help of an architect.

George Enescu lived from 1881-1955. He taught Lord Yehudi Menuhin. Enescu was a composer and violinist. He travelled to the USA to perform, and lived in France. He is buried in Pere Lachaise cemetery, which has many dramatic graves of famous people and is a tourist attraction where devotees pay homage to their favourite artistes.

You can see a seated sculpture of him in Bucharest. Vienna has a wall plaque of his face on a bas relief on a house where he lived.

I wanted a musical souvenir of Roumania. I bought this music box which plays Rhapsodie Roumaine.

London Beatles walking tour. You can walk across the zebra crossing which appeared on one of their covers.
Gilbert & Sullivan comic operetta (events at Grimsdyke Hotel, which was Gilbert's home).
Kenwood House, Hampstead.
Last Night of the Proms, Royal Albert Hall. Cheapest tickets are standing in the gallery.
Glyndbourne, opera, with strawberries and champagne picnics and deckchairs for hire.
Liverpool - statue of the Beatles
Many seasides have free concerts given around bandstands in parks in summer.
Musicals - look for two booths in London selling reduced price unsold or returned tickets on the day. You have to arrive early and queue up.
Tune your hire car radio to the BBC classical music stations. Or ask for a car which can play CDs and take your own discs with you to play on long journeys and in traffic jams.

You cannot get out your guitar and play it in a pub or restaurant unless they have a music license. The same goes for a Britain's Got Talent competition. I was in an event as a stand up comedy turn and we had to be moved out of the pub into a cricket club hall a week later because one of the turns was singing and the pub had no license.

Tribute Turns in Restaurants
Orama in Hatch End has regular tribute act evenings, very good value.

USA
All over America I saw items once owned by Elvis. A car in one museum, a suit in another, a guitar in another, a disc in another.
The great thing about America is that you are more likely to be able to hear country music on the airplane. You can do an Elvis tour.
Nashville.
Opryland. When I stayed at the Opryland hotel, I would go out in the morning, having had the radio off so I could sleep at night. I would come back and find the radio tuned to play Country music.
Graceland, home of Elvis.

YouTube
If you are looking for a national anthem or classic song, you are likely to find it on YouTube. I found several versions of the comic song about Romania. One was by Shirley Bassey. An even better one was by a Yiddish comic theatre group with a great tenor.

Several websites specialise in booking music events.
(I shall be adding more websites later. Come back tomorrow.)

Madeira, Madeira wine, Portugal and Aeroporto

Problem
Madeira, Portugal, Portuguese - what do we know about them?

Answers
I remember sitting on the sledge going downhill on Madeira as a child with my parents. Somewhere we have a picture in an old album which proves it and acts as an intermittent reminder.

Madeira
Madeira is an island known for Madeira wine. (You might recall the amusing, suggestive song, 'Have some madeira m'dear', from Flanders and Swan.) Madeira wine was created by a happy accident. The long journey by ship in the heat did not destroy the wine but improved it.

Madeira is a fortified wine - not distilled like a spirit. Alcohol is added to increase the strength. The same applies to another well-known Portuguese fortified wine, Port (from The port of Oporto in Portugal).

(Other fortified wines you may know are Spanish Sherry, which comes from the sherry triangle around southern Spain, Jerez, on the border with Portugal (where I went to a Bodega. I find Madeira and Port rather strong. My favourite fortified wine is Muscat de Beaune de Venise from southern France. Fortified muscats from around the world include Rutherglen Muscat from Rutherglen in Australia.)

A grand hotel is on the hill. You can take a ride downhill.

In case you hadn't noticed, Madeira is Portuguese (not Spanish).

Portuguese Language
Portuguese is similar to Spanish, two of the world's easiest languages for English speakers. Airport is Aeroporto. What could be easier than that.

Portuguese Names
Cristiano - Christian. Ronaldo - Ronald. Portuguese adds a lovely lilt to names and other words in the language. An extra syllable. An extra vowel. A slightly sing-song intonation.

If you want to go to Madeira, and learn a few words of the lingo first, you can pick up some Portuguese on Duolingo. Where else does the Portuguese language pop up amongst the population and place names? South America. Macau (now Chinese).

Wikipedia informs us that:
'Portuguese (português or, in full, língua portuguesa) is a Romance language and the sole official language of Portugal, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Angola, and São Tomé and Príncipe. It also has co-official language status in East Timor, Equatorial Guinea and Macau.'

Famous Footballers, Personalities and Airports
Which other landmarks are named after famous people?
John Lennon Airport, Liverpool, England. Named after John Lennon of the Beatles.
George Best airport, Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Tips
Ten Fast Facts:
1 Madeira is Portuguese.
2 Language: Portuguese.
3 Airport: renamed Aeroporto Cristiano Ronaldo.
4 Drink: Madeira wine is fortified wine.
5 Food: Madeira cake - a kind of sponge cake.
6 Capital: Funchal.
7 Where: - island.
8 Top activity - downhill sledge ride.
9 Top hotel
10 Tourist fact - popular cruise ship stop.

Try Madeira cake and wine in your home country and compare prices and flavours on arrival at the island. Allow time for a photo with the statue to open your slide show or photobook of your trip.

What's New In Liverpool - a statue of Cilla Black

Photo of Cilla from Wikipedia.

Problem
What's new to do in Liverpool? (I've been there before.)

Answer
A statue of Cilla Black. The statue of Cilla was organised by her three sons. She died in 2015. Not just a fun person with the common touch, but an OBE.

Stories
Where is the statue of her? Outside the Cavern music venue associated with Cilla Black and The Beatles pop group in the Sixties.

(They say that if you can remember the Sixties you weren't there. A reference to the drug culture.) Who said it?

I remember Cilla in her later years as the anchor for TV programme Blind Date. Unmissable to see or hear. Cilla with the teeth and the Northern accent.

I found her very watchable. I would not describe myself as a fan. It's still sad when somebody dies. You feel for their family. Every death reminds you that everybody lives in a sinking ship.

So I'm always happy to see a statue. It's a photo opportunity. An easy way to remember and recognise and get interested in history. I just realised, it is also a statue of a woman.

Songs
What else do I remember about Cilla? She sang: Anyone Who Had A Heart.

What else is old and new in Liverpool? A statue of the Beatles.

Liverpool is alos holding a music and tourism convention at Liverpool's The Titanic hotel.

Airport decorations

UK's Heathrow, Terminal 3 has pictures of the Beatles arriving in London. Another picture shows and the five planes nose together like petals on a flower marking the founding of Star Alliance.

Singapore's Changi is building a new terminal. Meanwhile decorations mark seasonal events in other terminals.
