Airline and Holiday Horror Stories Told Over Supper: Lost Luggage & cameras and keys, buying property and a dead body a dead body

"Don't get me started!"
Around the table at supper we all told our stories:

Airline Horror Stories
Everyone has a favourite airline and a favourite airline horror story. Walter prefers Easyjet to Ryanair.  However, he complained, 'Luggage allowances are getting smaller and smaller. I was asked to pay for luggage. I had bought a cheap ticket with NO luggage allowance!' When dealing with an unknown airline, the moral is, check the luggage allowance.

I asked, 'What of the early days of plane travel? Was it always so much better?'
Walter said: 'Years ago we got on the plane and a family who had never travelled before got on with us. First they changed from their clothes into their night clothes. Then they unwrapped their cooker and prepared to light it to cook supper!
'I called an air hostess who came running to stop them.'

Nicky, a hotel owner warned us about the hazards of buying property abroad in Asia.

Warnings About Buying Property
Nicky said: 'I went to buy a property and I could see from the plan that it wasn't the area they claimed. When I asked the girl, she replied: "The common area outside the lifts is divided between the six flats on that level so that counts as part of your floor area."

'I then asked about the swimming pool. She said, "The residents can use it free for five years. After that you have to join the club owned by the management to use it." '

I asked Nicky, 'Have you heard the story about the hotel guest who mistook the bedroom door for the bathroom door and locked himself out - in the nude - in the hotel corridor! Do you think it's a true story?'

Nicky said, 'Of course it is. Lots of hotels have self-locking doors. If you have a hotel with fifty or a hundred rooms, somebody locks themselves out every day. Once a week somebody is in their underwear or semi-dressed. And every month or year somebody will be completely nude. This happens all over the world. What is surprising is that once somebody thought it wasn't a true story. You don't believe anybody was that naive, do you?'

Hotel Horrors
The Dead Body
The story goes that a man checked into a hotel, collected his key, and found a dead body in the bed. When the living guest returned to reception, the receptionist didn't seem the least bit bothered. He simply handed over another key and said, 'Try this room.'

I am told that deaths in hotels, as well as on planes and coaches, are something staff have to prepare for. You can cover a body with a blanket and pretend the dead person is sleeping or resting. Or move them behind a curtain, in first class. Or down into the crew sleeping area.

Hotels wheel out dead bodies, covered with cloths, like dinners, on the large dinner trollies for room service, or wheeled tabled used for conference catering.
When a relative of mine was in an old people's home we were asked to stay in the room with her for ten minutes. Later, I asked the supervisor why. She explained that they were wheeling out a dead body, not unusual in a home for the elderly, and wanted all the living in their bedrooms so as not to see and get upset.

Hospitals, in the UK, move bodies on covered trolleys in separate lifts to the basement.

The Wrong Key
In a New Orleans hotel I could not get the door to open. The bell-hop arrived with the luggage. He tried the key and the door opened, a man in a bath towel frowning.

I gasped, 'What are you doing? This is my room.'
He retorted, 'No it isn't. It's my room!'
The porter shrugged, resigned, 'Oh, no. They can't get the keys right. They do this to me all the time.'

Let me move on to lighter subjects.

Video Lost
A honeymoom couple returned and showed their video to the whole family, including me. The husband turned on the video and proudly announced, 'This is our honeymoon video.' The opening shots were blank. He wound on. Still blank. He wound on further. Still blank. He would to the end. Still blank.

It could have been a tragedy. Luckily one of the audience had a sense of humour. She said, 'It's all censored. You just have to imagine it!' She burst out laughing and soon the whole room was in hysterics.

Camera Catastrophes
Finally, a mixed blessing story. Tom dropped his camera on a stroll up a mountain near a friend's house in New Zealand. The pair retraced their steps several times but could not find it. A year later the New Zealand friend reported, 'I found your camera. It was broken and unusable but I have retrieved the memory card with all your holiday photos!'

As Shakespeare said, Alls's well that ends well.

Spring Breaks: Flowers and Fruit in France in February

Problem
Where can I find flower and fruit festivals? Where can I go in February? To the south east of France. You could drive to the south west, then across to the south east and do two coasts.

Answers
Lemon Festival
Menton in France for orange and lemon festival. Menton is 'the lemon festival capital of the world'. You mean there are more? Yes, California, of course.

Story
A friend of mine, call him Richard (he's shy about being named) books every year. His top tips:
"France is not great for anybody who keeps kosher or is vegetarian or vegan. If you want vegetarian, you are better off in America or Italy.

Kosher Restaurants
"If you want kosher restaurants in France, try Nice and Cannes. In these seaside resorts you will find two or three, one opposite a Chabad place. But they are pricey.

"In France non meat eaters can eat risotto and tuna and tuna sushi. But that does get monotonous afer a while if you are staying for a week or two in summer. Okay for a long weekend spring break."

What's Free or Cheaper
"The festivals charge for seats to watch the parades. Quite expensive.

Budget Accommodation
"To economise, instead of hotels, opt for airb and b. Or bed and breakfast.

"But the French in bed and breakfast places in the south don't speak much English. Fine if you speak French."

Cheap Flights
What about cheaper flights? What about Ryanair?

I am very happy with Ryanair prices.

However, my friend says, "I wouldn't go on them if you paid me. I prefer Easy Jet."

He says, "I pay extra for more leg room (he is over six foot tall) and extra luggage and seating together. Even so, my wife and I pay no more than £200,  return fares from England to France, for the two of us."

Any other advice on bargains. What about late booking?

"That's great if you just want a holiday at a reduced price, and don't mind where. But if you have a specific destination in mind, book early to get the best fares."

Four wheel spinner suitcases for easy travel

I have spent hours looking at four when suitcases on eBay and Amazon and Google.
The decision is easy if price is not an object - but it is. The 'World's Lightest' fluorescent pink would cost me, or you, £59.50 for the smallest size and more than £284 for a set of four, from bagsandluggage on ebay.

Argos and Homebase and Tesco have suitcases around £20, but usually black. You have to watch out that you are not getting two wheels instead of four. Many of the eBay links are for four sizes of suitcase and you find they are sold out in the size you want or the colour you want.

Matching Sets
One advantage of matching luggage is that if you lose one of a pair, when reporting the loss, you have a photo to show staff. You can locate also report the brand, which you will be asked on the claim form by the lost and found department.

I looked at sets of three or four matching suitcases. I went off his and hers suitcase when two members of my family accidentally went off with each other's suitcases at the airport when we were going to different conferences. Luckily he realised in time that he had mine because I had my luggage tag and a coloured ribbon on the handle. Otherwise he would have been asked to open his suitcase at Customs and they would have found ladies underwear and concluded he was either a thief or a transvestite. I would have ended at a beach with skiwear and a business suit.

Colours and Patterns
Luggage which is pink with hearts is cute, but not if any men in my family want to borrow it. Black doesn't show stains and is inconspicuous. However, trying to identify our luggage on the tarmac of Changi airport after a bomb scare has put me off black luggage.

Later on another trip my luggage went missing at Changi. I was just reporting it when I spotted a suitcase with flowers by the side of a carousel half way down the arrivals hall. It was a suitcase I had bought at a bargain price in Mustafa's which they obviously couldn't sell quickly because of it's odd colour scheme. But it was really handy for seeing at a distance.

Four Wheels or Two?
Here are my choices and discoveries of four wheel suitcases. In the July sales at John Lewis department store the four wheel suitcases were beyond my budget. I looked in Watford and was shocked at the prices, even in the sale. You can check John Lewis and Debenhams on line.

The big supermarkets and chains also have luggage. Marks and Spencer. Tesco.

I do another search. Foldable suitcase only £13.49, delivery free, red bags and shoes, from luggagetravelbags, 18 inches, Easyjet cabin approved, but how many wheels? Only two.

I already have a black bag on two wheels from Antler. Fed up dragging it around. (After exhausting myself carrying it up and down stairs at stations.)

£21.99 four wheel from Skylight luggage, postage free, on eBay.
Other colours out of stock.

The red one is available, but dearer.
