Is it father's day, the day of one father? In English we use the apostrophe to signal to the reader in a quick way.

The letter s is a handy dual purpose, fuel purpose letter.

 One boy.

Father's day. One father.

A father, small initial letter, a type of object or person.

But. 'Please, Father!' Addressing your father or a priest, the capital letter in English is reserved for a proper name, a specific person.

In German, all nouns have capital letters. Does the German system have any advantages? Yes, it helps me, as a learner of German. I can sort out the nouns in a sentence to speed translation.

 In some languages you repeat an entire word to show more than one. Jalan jalan in Malay-Indonesian, roads, journeys. You might thînk the benefit of this system is added clarity.

I love learning languages. You discover new ways of thinking and communicating.

Another discovery for travellers is that different

countries celebrate on different days.

21st June 2026 in the UK.

When to celebrate Father's Day? Must it be only on that day?

Answers
Friday 15th to Sunday 17th is Father's Day weekend. Isn't that an oxymoron, a contradiction?

For those who say mothers should be treated every day, and fathers should be treated every day, extending the day to a weekend is not a problem.  On the contrary, less pressure. More space in restaurants. More choice of days.

Extended Birthdays
Frankly, in my family we often have birthday dinners the weekend before or after a birthday. We choose according to when we can get everybody together, not clashing with other events, as well as the best value and best time restaurant booking.

Early or Late Xmas
Many office Christmas parties take place early in December or even in January to take advantage of easier booking, people being available to attend, or cheaper restaurant prices and reduced prices for Xmas outfits and banners.

So when is Father's Day?
In the UK the weekend of June 15-17 2018.

Ideas for father's birthday and Father's Day gifts:
Golfing day.
Motorsport day (envelope with card and ticket for event later in the year).
Bottle of wine and dinner at home with favourite food.
Dinner out at a pub with favourite food.
All the fathers at a local club or group enjoying one big party.
Slide show of Dad's achievements last year or throughout his life.
Slide show or book of Dad and Mum and Dad and the children, his parents and friends and colleagues.
Favourite football team gifts or outing to a football or other sports museum. (See my other posts on football and rugby and sports museums and statues.)

Why would you do something special for father's day and not wait until your father's birthday?
Why would you celebrate a birthday instead of Father's Day or combine a trip or gift?
Because it's an opportunity of last chance for the family get together if father or another family member has a trip overseas or hospital stay or wedding that weekend or later in the year.

Father's Day UK - 21st June 2015

What do Dad's like to eat on Father's Day? Steaks? This year, 2015, Father's Day in the UK is 21st June, according to the email I just received from Miller and Carter. With one of the fathers in my extended family having a birthday in June, I'm hoping for some special offers.

The Ruislip branch has sent me the offer of a complimentary drink. They also have a great pun, the Daddy of all steaks.

Father's Day is Sunday 21st of June. But the offer is also valid on Saturday 20th. Why would anybody celebrate Father's Day on Saturday instead? Because you might be busy working on Sunday. Or in church. Or playing a sporting event, or judging it as a referee. Or the restaurant might be fully booked on Sunday. Or two different people, such as children living in different parts of the country, might wish to invite their father, or both father and step-father or fathers-in-law in different areas to lunch or dinner.
