More Portuguese Words For Supermarket Shopping - with my memory aids to help you

especial - special
fresca - fresh
gelado - ice
leite - milk
marca - brand
maio - May (no need to capitalise the initials of months in Portuguese)
meses - months
o - the
ovos - eggs (like the English word ovary)
pastel - pastry
queijo - cheese
queijos - cheeses
rustico - country style (lik ethe English word rustic)
sal - salt
soja - soy
vinho - wine (like the English word vine)

UK flag

English - Portuguese

brand - marca
cheese - queijo
cheeses - queijos
Country style - rustico
eggs - ovos
fresh - fresca (the first four letters are the same)
ice (cream) - gelado (the Italians have gelato)
May (the month) - maio
milk - leite (like the French word lait)
months - meses
pastry - pastel
potato - batata (tat in the middle of both words)
salt - sal (the same word was English without the t)
soy - soja
special -  especial (add e before s like the Spanish name for their country Espana)
wine - vinho

Portuguese Words You Can Easily Learn From A Supermarket Leaflet

 I was on holiday in Portugal in June, 2024 and picked up a supermarket leaflet, which I kept to help learn some Portuguese words. Now, In March 2025, I am tidying the house and throwing away some of the many leaflets I have picked up in my travels.

Before throwing away the leaflet, I thought I would fulfil my original intention of  translating it and learning some everyday words which are useful to use or at least recognize on signs. when shopping in Portugal.

Portuguese - English

altura - height

bem - well\

bola - ball

catergoria - category

com - with

de - of

e - and

em - in

forno - oven

fresca - fresh

infantil - child

iogurte - yogurt

liquido - liquid

mais - most

oliveira - olive

origem - (place of) origin

pera - pear

peso - weight

pimento - pepper

por - for

porco - pork

Precos - prices (note the cedilla under the c in Portuguese)

salada - salad

sardinha - sardine

tigre - tiger

unid - unit / single item

verde - green

viver - to live viver bem - to live well


English - Portuguese

and - e

ball - bola

Child - i (plural) nfantil

fresh - fresca

fruit - fruta (singular) frutas (plural)

green - verde

in - em

item (single) / unit - unid

Italian - Italiano

julho - July

junho - June

liquid - liquido

meat - carne (like carnivore)

pear - pera (the same letters but in a different order)

Learn another set of ten easy Portuguese words at the restaurant table

carne - meat
começar - commence / start
ementa - menu (both words have the letters MEN in the middle)
entrada - starter
mesa - table
sim - yes (like the Spanish si but with an extra M, like so many Portuguese words)
solteira - single (female not married)
solteiro - single (male not married)
tinto - red (wine - like tinted)
tipo - type
truta - trout

English - Portuguese
meat - carne (like carnivore or carnivorous)
menu - ementa
single (female) - solteira
single (male) - solteiro
start / commence - commeçar (the Portuguese ends not A but AR like the middle letters of stARt
starter - entrada
table - mesa
trout - truta
type - tipo
yes - sim
