Eggholic - egg-citing and eclectic, Indian style restaurant opened May 2025 (in NW London)

Egg-holic Restaurant in Hatch End, Pinner, London, England. Photo by Angela Lansbury. Copyright.

I entered Egg-holic in May 2025 (Thursday 8th), their first full evening open to the public. It's a friendly family affair. The Patel family. Two Hatch End Patels are running the franchise, father and son. I met mother, and she pointed out that her daughter had popped in.

Plus the two US-based Patels (unrelated) who started the business over in America. They were staying around for the first two weeks to supervise the cooking and add their experience and expertise.

Since everything is cooked on site, the American founders have needed to train the new UK staff how to cook all the dishes to ensure everything in the UK is consistent with the standard, style and menu in the USA. However, it's possible that the long menu might have one or two seasonal or permanent additions later in the year to offer regular customers a new experience. (Patel junior had already spent time in the USA.)

I shall come back to the Patels in London, England, India, the USA and worldwide. But first let's look at the menu.

The menu on the back wall. The mural in Indian languages on the right. Photo by Angela Lansbury. Copyright.

The illustrated menu is over the counter at the back, like in McDonald's, Costa and other places you are probably familiar with.  But there's also a fold over paper menu if you want to sit and read the menu.

You carry a number, signifying your order, to your table. You can pay first, with a credit card. In that way it's like the Wetherspoons pub across the road.

The Indian and Western Food

You can find egg dishes, chicken dishes, and cheese dishes.

Among the sandwiches for children I spotted cheese (minced) and chocolate (spread) sandwiches. With white bread (brown bread should be available later).

It came with crisps.  Check whether chips on the menu means crisps called chips in the USA.

You can try samosas. Potato.  Indian breads.

There's also a Thali, at £13.99.

DRINKS

Drinks include assorted lassis. I had a pink rose flavour falooda, with a wide straw for sucking up the thin noodles.

DESSERTS

Desserts include Kulfi, Gulab Jamun with ice-cream, or Brownie with ice-cream.

DECOR

The Indian Style Decor

A screen shows Bollywood films with lots of dramatic dancing.

A large version of their logo is on one recessed wall.

On the right of the serving area at the back is a mural in assorted Indian scripts. They are hindi, gujurati, Punjabi and Telugu, popular well-known sayings from various blockbuster films.

All the family and the USA visitors were friendly and chatty and happy to chat about their business, your business, and the world. They told me that the Patels originated in an Indian state north of the seaside port of Bombay, now called Mumbai. Being business savvy they spread all over the world so now you will meet people called Patel in the USA, UK, India, everywhere there are money and friends to be made. As the old saying goes, if you want to run a successful restaurant or shop you must wear a big smile.

Opening times.

They are open 5 to 10 pm, so for tea time or evening dinner, not breakfast nor lunch.

Phone (0203) 7933 0179.

381 Uxbridge Road, Pinner HA5 4JN.

I visited when they opened in Hatch End, Pinner, London on Thursday May 8th 2025.

Update Oct 2nd 2026.

A sign in the window says they have relocated.

The new venue will probably be announced on their website which mentions the USA, Canada and the UK.

How to Escape Hotel Horror Views and Disguise Home Views Of Wheelie Bins

At home in Singapore my condo's flat gave me views of palm trees and the blue swimming pool. However, when we flew to Sydney, Australia, where my husband was at a conference for a week. The hotel where we were staying gave me a bedroom with a view of the building site next door. I asked if we could change rooms. No fully booked, upgrades would be expensive.

Photo of construction site supplied by Park Taeho to Wikipedia article on construction.

Next morning I spent three hours glowering at the view, unable to leave the room because my husband was likely to come back at lunch time.At lunch time he phoned to say he was going out to a working lunch. Have lunch in the room.

Yes, I thought, enjoying the view of the tractors and scaffolding. I went down to reception. Another girl was on duty.

I said, I'm not keen on the view from my window.

I'm sorry, she said. We can't change the view.

No, I said, but I can change hotel. How long are we booked in for.

She checked. "A week."

I replied, "I am checking out in an hour. I shall look for another hotel which doesn't have a view of scaffolding. If I can't find one, I shall go back to Singapore where I have a lovely view of palm trees and the swimming pool. I am going up to my room and packing now. Could you please send a porter to collect my luggage in an hour, tell customer relations, and ask your supervisor to prepare our early checkout bill."

I got to the room and there was a phone call. They had found me a new room. The room was booked in my husband's name and they wanted to speak to him about our changing rooms.

My husband was in a meeting, but everybody at his end heard the conversation with the hotel. I think the company agreed to pay for an upgrade. But the hotel waived it anyway.

But what if your expat home overlooks a building site? Or simply the neighbour's wheelie bins?

Building Sites

To drown out noise you have to play music and/or wear earphones. In Singapore the work must desist at night.

I remember visiting an American expat whose husband was a pilot. He was kept awake by night noise and went down to tell the contractors it was illegal to work at night.

The workers' supervisor replied, "We have to work. It's an emergency. Trouble with your underground gas supply! "

"Really?" replied the pilot. "Then I shall call the gas supply company and complain. They will be most surprised. In this street we have bottled gas."

Five minutes later, the workers on the building site had all gone.

What if it is simply wheelie bins, as we say in England.

You can buy stickers. Or a screen.

Wall covering

Amazon had a wine bottle background.

Window Covering

Put pot plants on your window sill.

Buy cafe curtains, which are suspended at the horizon of the window. The curtains let in light and a view of the nearby cathedral towers, but shield the view of traffic and stop people outside from watching you eat.

In France net curtains are designed with views of countryside and quaint villages, cats flower pots and all sort of things. I admired them at a French friends' house. She said, 'You can buy them everywhere.' She was right. Curtain shops, supermarkets, hardware stores.

I bought sets to take back to the UK. In the UK we have merely plain nets and repeated patterns of flowers or leaves or geometric patterns. I used mine on an indoor archway.

This is a pair on sale at ebay. If you show a picture like this to a shop in France they will know what you mean and find you a  set or send you to a shop which is likely to have stocks.

Bin Pictures

You can stick small or large pictures on bins. If you love your holiday photos and are short of wall space, or want to disguise bins, you can print your own.

Video conferencing at home and work: tips on what to do

What  to check
1 Your equipment
2 The background you show
3 Your appearance
4 Your health
5 Safety and security

1 Equipment
Desk
Chair - adjust height so your feet reach the floor.
Screen - the bigger the better

Wireless typing
Wireless mouse

Wrist rest, to prevent repetitive strain injury RSI
(Mine is Fellowes brand. I kept dropping it on the floor and losing it under the desk because it is black. So I stuck cut off bits of white address labels on it to find it in the dark.

Items Nearby
Plants - real good for oxygen in daytime, but make sure they won't fall, and can be watered easily wihout any water reaching papers.
Plastic plants? Could look good on screen.
Food and drink - not visible, not endangering electrics.
I drink water to feel alert and because it stops me rubbing my eyes which itch when dehydrated.

2 Green screen.
We suspended a green sheet on tubing stretched across the room between two top cupboards. This created a plain but coloured background.

3 Keep a mirror and comb near the desk.
Comb and Mirror
Comb hair and put on lipstick early. You never know who will phone when to ask you to speak on screen.
Shirt and Tie
Consider a shirt and tie, or dickey (false shirt front). You can also get a tie ready neatly tied on elastic to go around you neck (used by stage performers and orchestra musicians).

4 Exercise
Organize breaks. Do exercise first thing or at lucn time or in the evening. Or do foot walking under the desk.

5 Hide valuables away from view.
Do not reveal doors and the layout beyond the room where you are speaking.
Do not talk about your valuables.
On the other hand,  whilst at home, on screen, or when alone to raise morale, you could wear any necklaces which are too valuable, or in danger of breaking (such as pearls). Or the shoes too delicate to wear all day when running around town, could be our of their boxes where they would moulder away never worn and instead on your feet unseen in your home office to make you feel good.

Finding a bus route in Singapore

I used to marvel at the expertise of local people who could log into their phones, typing with two thumbs, and produce a bus number, tell me when it would arrive.

Now I realise it is very simple if you know your bus number or destination. Type in the bus number in google. Up pops the list of stops.

You can check the name of the stops. Count how many more before you arrive.

Get out your bus and train pass before your destination to tap in before you alight at the stop.

If you are taking a long journey, it's worthwhile sitting upstairs for a view over the scenery. Alternatively sit at the back where the last seat is raised and gives a better view.

You can see your surroundings during the daytime, before 7 pm all year. That makes daytime journeys more interesting, and it's easy to spot landmarks and read the stops. However, you can see the approaching stop in lights in the overhead screens inside the bus.

Any advantage to the train over the bus? The MRT runs every 3 minutes, instead of up to 15 minutes. You wait on the air conditioned platform for the train.

I Spy A Spider - What Next - A Cockroach on Camera?

Problem
A spider.

Answer
It's not a problem if you have a camera. In fact, far from trying to get away, or moving it, your main aim is to get as close as possible.

Mobile Phone Cameras
I took this picture with a mobile phone. My phone is the one I bought after trying out three mobiles of different sizes (and prices) in the shop, taking something at a distance, comparing results to see if the extra money made a difference.

Our other more recent experiment was to see whether two phones, one for the UK, one for overseas, had the same results, or if one was better. The phone with the larger screen did not have the best camera. So, with a choice of two mobile phones, you might gain best results using the large screen mobile as a phone, but the one with the better camera on days when you expected to take photos.

Story
When I saw the spider, I called the family photographer with the tripod and the patience, (the introvert) to take a close up picture.

Looking at the spider on a big screen, I am amazed how colourful is our spider. What looks like black and white from a distance, close up the legs are oblongs of orange and brown as well as black and white. And so many hairs on the legs!

Where are the face, the eyes?

On a day when you are stuck at home working, still a chance to get great photos, in Singapore birds on the aloe vera on the balcony, geckos.

Maybe next time I shall try to treat 'my' visiting cockroach like my spider.

I can send somebody else in with a spray and a tripod, and view it at a safe distance, on the screen.

PS
I have tried to identify this spider. It looks a bit like a Garden Centre Spider.

This is a British spider.

http://www.uksafari.com/garden_centre_spiders.htm
Their first page shows you several spiders to help you identify yours.

If you prefer a bigger spider for your photographs, go to Australia. We had a spider the size of a tulip in the bathroom at Margaret River, Australia.

As for cockroaches, in Singapore, when I called an Texan American to see what I thought was a shockingly large cockroach, she shrugged. She commented:
We've got bigger ones in Texas.
