Where To See Anne Frank Memorials in Argentina, England, Germany, Holland, Malaysia, Scotland, and the USA

Anne Frank in short sleeved garment.

In 2021 Hanukah starts on the evening of Sunday in November and ends on a Sunday in December, being an eight day festival. In 1942 when Anne Frank and her family were in hiding, Hanukah was close to Christmas. Hanukah follows the lunar calendar like all Jewish festivals (and Muslim and Chinese festivals).

Anne Frank and her family were not Orthodox but Liberals. They celebrated Hanukah. They lit candles for ten minutes because candles were in short supply.

In the Netherlands, in the capital, Amerstardam, you can see the tall canal-side house where Anne Frank's family hid. They occupied the two top floors with access to the attic.

When I visited it, I saw a large exhibition at the end showing what the Anne Frank Foundation has been doing. They are not just commemorating Anne Frank and her family by keeping alive the memory of Anne but also promoting harmony worldwide.

Monuments, Museums and Visits (alphabetically by country)

ARGENTINA

GERMANY

Aachen

A border town. Has the solpersteins, (stumbling stones) embedded in the pavement, for Anne, her sister Margot and her mother Edith.

Anne's stone reads (I have translated the German into English): Here lived Anne Frank, born 1929, fled 1934 (to) Holland interned at Westerbork deported 1944 Bergen-Belsen died March 1945.
The stones for Anne and Margot list only Bergen-Belsen which is where they died of Typhus.

Their stones do not mention Auschwitz - which is listed on their mother's stone because she died there of disease and starvation. Edith had shared her meagre rations with her daughters when they were in hospital there.

Frankfurt

Frankfurt Memorial at house where she lived with her sister and granny whilst her father was establishing his new job and business in the Netherlands. The plaque shows the two sisters with a friend called Grace between them.

The German text, which I have translated into English, reads: Anne Frank, born on the 12th of June, 1929, lived with her grandparent and elder sister Margot from March 1931 in this house.

From her diary entry 11 April 1944: "Once this terrible war is over, once again we will become human beings and not all be (only) Jews."

London

Bust of Anne Frank at The British Library, 96 Euston Road, near Baker Street.

The British Library also has a tree commemorating Anne Frank, with a plaque inscribed with a poem by Michel Rosen, an English, Jewish, author of poems and books for children. I met him in Pinner where he was running a workshop for children. (The British library won an award for architecture and has many busts, sculptures, exhibitions and a bench in the shape of an open book, with the open pages forming the seat and backrest.)

Memorial to Anne Frank and Holocaust victims and survivors in Hyde Park.

The only survivor of the Secret Annexe was Anne's father who went back to Holland, looking for his family, then to Switzerland, finally in Edgware, NW London, where I lived. I had no idea he was living near me.

SCOTLAND

SWITZERLAND
