I see that the boxes which contained mandarin oranges have been thrown away in Singapore. But the Chinese New Year signs are still hanging on doors and walls. So when does Chinese New Year end?I asked my Chinese friends in Singapore. They told me that this year, 2022, Chinese New Year ends on February 15th. Of course, being a lunar New Year, the dates change each year.
We needed to know when Chinese New Year ended, in order to decide the theme for a Toastmasters International club's zoom meeting. Chinese New year ends on the 15th, one day after Valentine's day, always on February the 14th.
The last day of Chinese New Year is also called the Lantern Festival.
My Singaporean Chinese friends told me, I that in the old days, the last day of the New Year's celebration was known as the Chinese Valentine's Day. On this day, young girls who most of the year were kept at home, were allowed to go out and enjoy themselves, unescorted, looking at the lanterns.
However, according to Wikipedia, the Chinese Valentine's Day is also in the 7th month. It celebrates a meeting of two lovers.
Until February 15th you will still see the celebratory Chinese New Year signs. Also, you can still wish people Gong Xi Fa Chai.
