Lunch At The Cavalry & Guards Club, tea and drinks

Our group had booked a room at The Cavalry & Guards Club private room.  You can take the two person lift near the main hall or the slightly roomier life further on. If you have the time and energy, enjoy the grand staircase, passing the pillars, portraits and the piano.

The staircase is grand and was a good setting, a fine frame for a flattering photo.

Other groups included a much larger engagement party.

We arrived an hour early on July 1st because the Pride Parade in London march was closing streets, closing stations, and filling the pavement.

The upstairs windows gave a view of the parade.

Our group's meal consisted of a pate, duck, and rhubarb tart.

My vegan friend, Laura, had a different menu.

The staff were well organized and obliging. The breads and butter were interesting. One of the bread choices was a roll topped with multi seeds.

The pate looked interesting. The green pea sauce was piquant. Quail's eggs, as expected, small.

The duck was soft and delicious. The grated potato in the shape of a small brick was good enough.

The rhubarb tart sounded suitably in season, but was a disappointment. It looked good, but the rhubarb was underdone and tasteless.

I think in order for it to stand upright, it must be lightly cooked. No. Not a success.

My friend Laura's vegan dessert of a fruit mousse was deliciously piquant and brightly beetroot coloured. Lovely looking and luscious.

Mm - that looks good! Photo by Angela Lansbury.

A previous meal ended with the host's choice of a chocolate dessert for everyone in the group, which was  much better than the rhubarb

Previous meals had been better.

Out lumch ended late and we were stuck at the venue for about three hours after more because several nearby underground railway stations were closed on July 1st for the Pride In London parade. Streets were also closed to cars, buses and taxis.

The bar on the ground floor was very jolly because of the well dressed people attending the engagement party. Prices on the menu varied but included reasonably priced cups of tea.

On previous occasions we had had alcoholic drinks after a lunch including wine. This time we had tea instead,.

Earl Grey with bergot suited my husband who was driving later. I had a fruit tea. One of the teas or coffees came up with brown sugar cubes in a lidded pot with tongs. And a solid dice of shortbread.

That meant we could sober up before walking, catching a train, and finally driving home.

The last thing I did was have a photograph next to a guard who was one of two standing at the doorway to the engagement party.
