I have a good chair at my desk at home, but it is harder to maintain good posture when travelling. On my recent holiday in Albania, two of the three hotels where I stayed provided only backless stools in the bedroom, then only one, so the second person had to perch on the edge of the bed when typing.
In the UK many pubs have benches in the gardens. Even restaurants with indoor seating often have benches or stools without backs. Just look around and you can see people hunched over.
Walk down the street, and it's horrifying to see the old people with curved backs. Those backs are unsightly for the onlooker, worse still, painful for the stooped person.
Even if you are not concerned about the long term effect, you need good posture when travelling. You feel more alert. You look more confident and are likely to get upgrades.
What can you do to restore or maintain good posture?
Source of The Posture Products
I have bought posture support items before, online.
The one in the photo above came from a chemist shop in London, Tanna's in Hatch End. You can buy it online. I thought it was a good buy because less of a risk that buying online. I had in mind that if it was too small or large I might be able to change it.
Putting It On
You have to do it up tightly to get it to have any effect. It does up, adjects with hook and loop in two places, around the body horizontally, and both shoulder straps.
Taking It Off
To save time fixing it and working out the correct size, I tried to take it off by undoing only the horizontal strap. I left the two shoulder straps done up.
Padding and Pressure - Pros and Cons
The shoulders are padded, which makes it comfortable. However, at first it pressed on my broken collarbone. I soon got used to that.
I also found it pressed on the middle of my spine between my shoulders. But that is because I am getting round shouldered. Maybe that means it is doing me good, straightening my spine, by trying to flatten it.
My working on my computer absorbs my attention. So, I soon forget the pressure of the posture support. I do notice it every now and then.
Thickness Of Shoulder Straps
The main disadvantage is the thickness of the padded shoulder straps. I wear it under my dress and I cannot do up my dress.
I could wear it on top of a thin silk top. Under a jacket. But I worry that the pressure will ruin the silk shoulders of my top.
However, here I am wearing it. So, on the whole it is a success. Not a waste of money.
Wearing It Long Term - or short term?
To prevent or correct round shoulders, you really ought to wear it long term. Unless wearing it short term teaches you the habit of sitting upright.
You can wear it short term to relieve pain, or during a spell of work at a desk. Or to look good at an event, such as at a wedding, in photos, on TV, at a conference, or a business meeting.
I might wear it for a couple of days. Then put it away and forget about it. But that applies to many clothes I buy.
Eventually, I rediscover it months or years later, with delight.
