Bubbles and Brownies Dessert Lounge For Brownies In Northwood

Bubbles and Brownies is a pretty pink snack stopoff in Northwood.

The bubbles are bubble tea. The decor is pink and white, with circles and rose motifs.

The brownies are small, flat, dark brown chocolate cakes.

They also sell a small range of ice creams. Our five year old grand-daughter chose mango ice cream. I found it too sweet, with not enough mango taste. Three of us tried it and didn't finish it. But we had just had a three course meal including desserts a couple of doors along at Lomito Argentinian steak restaurant.

That didn't stop Dad from buying a brownie to take home.

Our five year old loved posing for a picture in the circular alcove. It's certainly the perfect backdrop for pretty pictures.

If you drive on to Hatch End, where I hail from, has a huge selection of moreish ice creams with great flavours. Small amount of seating. No atmosphere. Surrounded on two sides by the counters and fridges. Perfect for a quick take away and suck and slurp in, surrounded by crowds in the evenings.

However, if you are in Northwood, night or day, and want to sit in smart surroundings, Bubbles & Brownies is pretty and peaceful.

I asked for their business address card. On the back of it is an offer for a free bubble tea after you have had ten, marked on the back on the card.

Parking is free, currently, August 2026, after 6 pm in the small car park around the corner opposite the library.

This is the only branch. No more, yet? They have been in Northwood about 18 months.

Insurance, house fire and health - countries UK and USA compared

Fire Problem

January 9th and 10th 2025 saw wildfires destroying areas of Los Angeles on west coast USA. I saw news reels showing the destruction of homes, restaurants, and a gas station (which in the UK would be called a garage, with petrol pumps).

Fire was not a once in a thousand years unexpected event. We have known about the spread of fire since the Great Fire of London, for which there is a monomuent you can see in London, where the fire started in a bakery. Wooden buildings were built close together. Fire just ran along rows of houses from one to another.

I saw something similar happen to the house opposite. A man was gardening. He dropped the flaming weedkiller on the ground to answer the phone or the front doorbell. The weedkiller flame or spark ignited low plants. The flames or sparks reached the row of trees along the fence. The flame ran horizontally along the trees.

Fortunately, the anxious neighbours in their back kitchen had seen flames near their window and later shoot along their fence and had called the fire brigade before I saw flames appearing above the garage, and thought, oh, a bonfire, wait a minute, that's above the garage which is taller than a six foot man, that's a nine foot high flame right beside a garage with a car in it or beside it, don't wait a minute, call the fire brigade now.

Afterwards the lady fire officer told me that she and her crew arrived just in time. In another fire minutes both houses would have been alight and gone.

So the fire brigades as well as insurance deal with fires in an area and know about fire worldwide and through history. Every househoder landowner landlord and tenant hotel management and hotel guest needs to know what precautions could and should be taken to prevent or to tackle or escape from fire, flood and burglary / invasion by burglars or hooligans or war.

Fire Insurance

Fire insurers (as well as governments doing worst case scenario planning) know what fire prevention measures are taken in each area, the likelihood of fire, and the cost of compensation, for rehousing and rebuilding.

Home owners complained that a major insurer failed to renew insurance cover for homes and buildings, because a legal cap on the amount the insurance could charge. This was supposed to protect the consumer. However, the insurance companies apparently saw that they risked going broke because of the hire risk of fire.

Yet some islands of unburned building remained. Brick chimneys standing like towers over the ash of woodden dwellings. The entire Getty museum estate with fire up to its gates.

What was different about the safe areas? Apparently As far as I can tell, precautions are well known but not budgeted for.

Building Construction And Reconstruction

What was not done?

1 To prevent dry burning bushes by cutting,, or controlled burning of bushes which would catch fire naturally, from sparks from other fires (or from arson).

2 Water Storage For Prevention

Houses were built of wood, which is good for resisitng earthquakes, but bad for fires. If you build rows of houses together that saves on heating but prevents access to the back and means fire spreads unless the construction is fireproof. If you build out garages to adjoin adjacent buildings, that could make a domino effect for fires, and a gap which is too narrow means you cannot repaint to remove insects animals, humans who fall, work there, trapped cats, mould from leaking gutters, nor provide a fire break.

3

4 Affordable Insurance

Apparently, the government's laws, designed to protect the consumer, put a cap on the price or percentage increase of insurance in order to make it affordable by the consumer so that people did not risk going without insurance.

Unfortunately, it seems that the insurance copanies calculated that the see saw balance tipped so that the income would not cover the outgoings in a catastrophe (which was not preventable because the govenment had cut funding of services such as fire brigades, trained officers - bringing in untrained people from ethnic minorities or majorities to provide them with employment and water storage.

Insurance companies are required to hold enough money from income to pay out for scattered or grouped disasters. They might write in clauses warning that they will not (and cannot) pay out for major catastrophic events (such as war and riots) which would require more financial compensation than has been paid in that year (minus the payment for the insurance companies' staff, offices, and shareholders dividends).

Possible Solutions - Water Storage

If water was not stored, use sea water.

Why was sea water not brought in?

At first it was. This works in small scale fires if the winds are blowing smoke away from the approaching planes.

However, in a major fire with huge amounts of smoke blowing towards the incoming planes the pilots cannot operate and even if they want to take the risk they are banned for their own safety and the safety of the aircraft (and those below in the event of a crashed plane) and the cost of more compensation for injured firefighter pilots and loss of firefighters or pilots.

That leaves us with two options for the future.

1 Water Storage

Every house should have water storage and be warned at fire risk times to store water and to water gardens and bushes.

But you get hose pipe bans during hot times of drought. Yes. So you have to cut down un-needed bushes.

But conservationists say that animals and insects live there.

Also in London, our local professional gardener, Martin, complained about people concreting over front gardens to make driveways. Cynics, or kind people, might say, that means less work available for gardeners. That affects him. But he is already in high demand.

Water Drainage - Flood Risks And Prevention

What affects everybody is the risk of flooding, made worse by concrete and roads, because water cannot sink into the ground but flows downhill. It pools above the damp proof course, a horizontal black line which looks like slate between the bricks about a foot off the ground, which you can see on blocks of flats.

I was sent videos of flooding in Northwood at Sentis Court. It also affects bungalows (such as Hillview Road in Hatch End, and businesses at the bottom of sloping roads (such as the Broadway, (the high street, which American call main street) in Hatch End. So, this could affect housing complexes and hillside streets worldwide.

Eveything requires the right balance. Too much water (dams not repaired or overflowing) and you get flooding. Too little water, you get fires or cannot put out fires.

Insurance Options

The state (of California) could, and in my opinion should, offer last resort insurance the way that the NHS (National Health Service) in the UK operates. The UK government taxes your income (National Health Insurance contribution) and provides basic health care.

If every state in the USA including California did this, then each state would take an amount to insure your home and provide health care. The state would also be responsible for rehousing and rebuilding homes for the homeless.

But the hospitals in the UK are only where the state builds them, and they want big hospitals in one place near cities, so local residents are often heard of running cmapiaagns to prevent th closure of smaller hospitals which the state or local council wants to centralise. Similarly, the state (in Singapore Housing Development Board, HDB for short) provides homes on cheaper land out of town, and sometimes on flood risk land. So, hospitals and homes, are only where the state builds them. (And where government decides to build them.)

The same applies to local government and commercial and individual decisions. In an ideal world, every individual has the money and sense to take good precautions. Also, and so does the govenment. No ignorance, risk-taking, irresponsiblity, corruption, greed.

If only.

Lessons Learned

Ghetty Museum

1 Concrete Building

Not wood, thick concrete walls.

2 Sprinklers outside. (The Ghetty Museum can't have water inside all over watercolours and oil paintings.

Modern hotels are different. They have sprinklers to protect people. They don't have heirlooms. Minimal objects, to prevent theft. Furnishings changed every three years anyway because of wear and tear and to update.)

3 Evacuation

When a fire is nearby, museums like the Ghetty get fewer visitors. They can send away ticket selling staff.

They could just keep a minimum of outdoor firefighters, mostly daytime only, keeping watch. Already outdoors, they could escape in a hurry.

Onlookers From Afar

Those of us far away can only look on with horror at disasters. No. We can learn. To prevent disaster happening to us. (Global warming. Water storage. Budgets for fire fighting. Meritocracy for recruiting firefighters. Insurance.)

And to step in with advice, and financial and equipment help. And sympathy.

Travel

Meanwhile, for travellers, your travel to Los Angeles or through Los Angeles might be disrupted.

May the rest of 2025 bring better news for all of us worldwide.

Zufa Lebanese Restaurant in Hatch End and Northwood - a Zinging time, a drink with dates and BYO day

Restaurant location

Zufa Lebanese restaurant in north west London has branches in both Hatch End and Northwood.

The Restaurant Name

\The name Zufa is a girl's name meaning elegant. It is elegant and understated.

Website

I looked up the restaurant menu in advance so I knew what I wanted to order. The date drink. The mixed starter or mezze. The duck wrap for my main course. Baklava for dessert.

Seating Greeting

We had made an evening dinner reservation for four, two couples. We were immediately greeted by Diana who offered us a choice of tables. I normally like to sit away from the window. However, our guests seemed intent on sitting under the glass canopy with a view onto the street.

Whether Window Seats?

Fortunately for me, the two tables immediately next to the outside were occupied. So we were set slightly back. I don't like being by the window.. It's like eating in a goldfish bowl.

As we sat down, we heard the insistent bleep bleep bleep of the pedestrian crossing outisde.. By day you can see how the window seats of the three adjacent restaurants are beside the crossing - which makes them easy to find.

Fortunately I only noticed the crossing bleep a couple of times during the evening. Though we were also disturbed a couple times by cars or bikes racing past.

Our friends clearly didn't mind. Why? Some people love window seats because they like light. Some like fresh air. Some hate looking at walls. Some want to view a busy street and feel they are out in the world for the evening.

Drink Made From Dates

Dates Drink, (Jallab) Zufa restaurant, Hatch End. Photo by Angela Lansbury. Copyright.

The evening started well. My dates drink came up fast. With a metal straw. A real date flavour. Ice and ine nuts.

I would eat there again and again just to have the date drink.

I had looked it up online. Some suppliers charge a lot for a bottle of it. Other sell a small jar, but the postage is twice the price of the goods

Starters

Starter at Zufa restaurant. Photo by Angela Lansury. Copyright.

We had a huge plate of meze or mixed starters. A meal in itself . Enough chicken cubes, humous, yogurt mix, green moist mountain. The flat bread was a bit dry.

I felt I had hardly room for the main course after that.

Main Courses

Duck

Duck wrap with chips at Zufa. Photo by Angela Lansbury. Copyright.

For the main course I chose the duck magret. Duck magret is not ordinary duck, apparently, but fed well, like the foie gras which some places have banned.

Lamb

Lovely lamb shank at Zufa Restaurant. Photo by Angela Lansbury. Copyright.

The best dish, in my opinion, was the lamb which was moist meat. My husband chose cooked vegetables instead of french fries, just as well. as we had more than enough french fries, enough to take some home.

Desserts

Finally baklava. Slightly cheaper than the alternatives. I kner from elsewhere not to order chocolate baklava which sounds interesting. The chocolate flour drown aout they honey and nuts and flaky pastry which are the main feaures of baklava. The alternative  slightly dearer dessert we wanted was not in stock. The baklava looked good, and plentiful, in small pieces. I thought the baklava was a bit dry, so did the other diners. All four of us tried it.

One diner said, 'I don't think it was home made'. I think that serving it in tiny pieces allows it to dry out.

Lebanese Coffee

The Lebanese coffee was not thick like Turkish, Greek and Cypriot coffee. Nor did it come ready sweetneed as an opiton, (unlike Turksih, Greek and Cypriot coffee). Sugar in ackets were brought on the side. The novelty was the small long handled saucepan to serve yourself. Amusing to look at. I thought it lacked the flavour or coffee, and the flavour and sustenance of milk and sugar. An amusement to try once. But next time I would order a regular coffee or cappucino or drink decaff at home. As an entertainment for our guests, it worked well.

So, what's my verdict? Ten out of ten for the date drink. The starter, a good 9, except for the bread. Don't order more, even though they might, politely, ask if you want more. If I went back, I would order the date drink again, maybe indulge in two, the mixed platter starter, the lamb shank, not the baklave, another dessert, and a different coffee. Yes, I would definitely go back. Date drink, as they say, to die for.

Verdict On Size

One plate of starters, mixed platter, was enough for two, and the plate of baklava desserts was enough for two.

Decor

The decor of the restaurant and toilets is understated. No distraction, visually, nor music and on a midweek night no noise from other people. We were all very satisfied with the novelty food and our cosy evening together.

I looked up recipes for making your own jellabi, and baklav. Both involved hours of work. No thanks, I'll eat out or order in or look in the supermarkets.

Amazon had several suppliers but the first two I tried said they could not deliver to my address so I gave up.

TOP TIP

you can order their food online for collection or delivery.

Tuesday is BYO (bring your own bottle) day.

A traveller's sukkah which fits in the trunk of your car

You can buy a ready-made sukkah.

Learn something strange every day. You can buy a fold-up safari sukkah which fits in the trunk of your car. I suppose this would be really handy if you were a single son visiting your Auntie Rachel and wanted to put up a two-person sukkah in a hurry. This is from the UK, from a company with offices in three areas of London plus Manchester.

In the USA you can buy a pop-up Sukkah.

Schach - Roof

The website said it comes complete with a schach. I had to look up that word. As I suspected, it is Hebrew and means roof. Now here's the odd thing. It has to be made of something that grows, not a fabric tent. More like twigs.

After I saw huts at harvest time in India, in the middle of fields, as a temporary shelter for the worker guarding the harvest, the bales of crops, I wondered if a shelter was the idea behind it, or the origin. However, far from protecting you, it has to be open so you can see the sky and it must let in the rain!

I knew it had to be open to the sky. I knew that, because last year I read that if you build one on a balcony, as is done on many apartment blocks in Tel Aviv, it is only authentic, no, that's no a strong enough work, only valid, if  it is open to the sky, not a balcony completely covered by another.

One year I went to a Sukkah ceremony at the Northwood and Pinner Liberal synagogue in Northwood. I met people who were not Jewish. For example, from the Methodist church next door. The event was also advertised in the local library and assorted free local newspapers and magazines. Other visitors were from multi-Faith organizations such as the Three Faiths organization, uniting Jews, Christians and Muslims. We had honey and apples to eat. Like at Jewish New Year.

Etrog - Citrus

I later visited the Sukkah of a neighbour who was a lay rabbi. He showed me the etrug. (A lemon or symbolic citrus fruit, often in a lemon shaped box.

Lulav

And a frond with four parts. Wave the lulav around, and say a prayer. (In Hebrew.)

You must turn to face north, east, south and west. Not just Jerusalem. Incidentally, Jerusalem is not always east or west. It depends which part of the world you are in. If you are in the west (of Jerusalem), then Jerusalem will be to your East. But if you are East of Jerusalem, then Jerusalem will be to your west. I suppose the same applies to saying prayers, building a religious building, and orienting a gravestone.

What is the difference between a sukkah and Sukkot? A sukkah is the temporary building. Sukkot is the festival.

Food and Fun At the Jewish Harvest Festival - Fruit-Filled Canopy for Sukkoth Sept 20-27, 2021

This photo shows the traditionally bearded chief rabbi of Jerusalem in a sukkah. On the table are bottled juices and sweetmeats. The cloth walls have been decorated with paintings and streamers.

Another view of a sukkah shows the fabric wall, the wooden ceiling open to the sky, suspended electric lights, coloured lanterns, pictures of grapes, hanging and green fronds and paper chains.

Jewish Sukkoth - UK

Also following the lunar calendar, the Jewish festival of Sukkoth, celebrated at homes and synagogues in Israel, Jewish northwest London (where Anne Frank's father retired post WW2) and the USA. Some neighbours and synagogues will invite nearby communities to see and join in, welcoming all comers of all religions.

I went to a Sukkah ceremony held at the back of Northwood & Pinner synagogue in Northwood. They had invited members of the next door church.

I also visited a sukkah at the back of the home of neighbours in Hatch End, Pinner.

Sukkah in London, England, built in the back garden against the house wall, with real greenery which has taken hours to install, a base of flowers, and citrus fruit and etrug. Photo by Angela Lansbury.

Later in 2020 I was invited to a dinner in the Sukkah of a house in Finchley.

The sukkah is just like the booths you see built in India where a guardian sleep to watch over the gathered in crops.

See Sukkahs in Israel

A Sukkah on a rooftop in Jerusalem. Photo from Gilabrand in Wikipedia under Sukkah.

In Israel you can see the balconies of apartment blocks have a sukkoth. The only regulation being that the temporary structure must be open to the sky. That means if your balcony is immediately under another, you can't have a sukkah.

A place with lots of apartment blocks with balconies is Tel Aviv which has wonderful Bauhaus buildings - German fore-runner of art deco in the UK, France, and Italy.

What is a Sukkah?

The sukkah is a lattice with suspended fruits and ferns and greenery and nowadays plastic baubles like a Christmas tree. Expect a drink of fruit juice or wine, some fruits and or food and a quick prayer or blessing as you stand around or an entire service over a dinner table.

The structure are called a sukkah. The festival is sukkot (Hebrew), or sukkas (Yiddish which is North and East European, German with a few words of Hebrew or Russian or Polish or the ancestor's language.

You can buy a sukkah kit. Ask or pay somebody to build you one. Build it yourself. Look in newspapers and on local websites to find an event. Ask friends and family.
